Apparently, not even a typhoon could keep me away from Shanghai for Google I/O Connect China 🙈 While there were so many flight delays and cancellations getting into Shanghai because of the weather issues and typhoon Dolphin, I was surprised my flight still went ahead (especially as the turbulence had me holding on for dear life). I loved meeting developers and builders from across the region and sharing what we're up to in Chrome. I spent most of the event at the HTML-in-Canvas booth, which had pretty epic demos of the amazing things you can do with the canvas API and how this latest update is an incredible improvement for accessibility. It was especially cool to share the creative demos and libraries people have already built using HTML-in-Canvas. In between chats with developers, I ran off to run a workshop helping developers get started with Modern Web Guidance. It was a popular session, the room was so full we had lots of people standing and watching from the back! I walked through how you can: ✅ install it with any agent ✅ pair it with Chrome DevTools for agents to find and fix performance issues ✅ audit a site for outdated code against a Baseline target ✅ build new features that make a site feel a little more delightful ✨ If I'm being for real, the best part was the food wheweee 🤤😪😪 so good! • We're excited to see ChatGPT supporting WebMCP! We co-proposed WebMCP as a web standard track API that lets sites expose structured tools to AI agents. Because it's still experimental, it will likely change based on practical testing. Join OpenAI Developers WebMCP Challenge to build agent-ready web apps and win prizes → https://goo.gle/4qpDQYV Take on the virtual challenge from Aug 25 to Sep 3 to try out the spec. And tune into the kickoff livestream on Aug 25 to view example projects, learn best practices, and see what the judges are looking for. Plus, our own Sarah Drasner is joining the judging panel! We can't wait to see what you build.

The WebMCP Challenge is here. We’re teaming up with Cloudflare, Shopify, Vercel, Google Chrome, Render, and Netlify to see what you can build when people and AI agents work together. Introducing WebMCP support in the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser. Your website exposes the tools; ChatGPT discovers and uses them directly on the live page. Your site controls which actions are available while people and ChatGPT work together. Build a new web app or ChatGPT Site, or add WebMCP to an existing site. Up for grabs: $35,000 in cash prizes, Codex Micros, ChatGPT Pro subscriptions, OpenAI merch, and partner prizes. Build and submit by September 3 at 5 p.m. PT. https://lnkd.in/eyte9cyC

  • Catch up on all the web platform features that landed recently → https://goo.gle/4zkP8S9 July brought exciting updates across browsers to help you build cleaner and more efficient web apps. Chrome 151 introduces the declarative <usermedia> capability element for seamless permission management, alongside textStream() for easier binary decoding. Firefox 153 brings customizable select parsing and Intl.Locale Info APIs, while Safari 26.6 delivers essential stability fixes.

  • Take control of your compute shader performance with WebGPU in Chrome 151 and 152 → https://goo.gle/4gLeGj9 The latest release brings explicit subgroup size control to WGSL. By declaring the @subgroup_size attribute, you can guarantee execution at specific power-of-two sizes — ideal for tuning complex AI workloads across platforms. Shoutout to our partners at Intel for making this possible! This release also updates setImmediates validation to throw OperationError and adds experimental Dawn updates like the snorm10-10-10-2 vertex format.

  • You can't predict whether users are going to type a haiku or a novella, so any size you pick for form fields is likely to be wrong for somebody. You can either force input into rigidly-sized text boxes or bloat the page with complex JavaScript to resize form elements, causing layout headaches. The newly available Baseline field-sizing CSS property solves this natively → https://goo.gle/4a1HJMM The field-sizing property changes how you build forms by enabling HTML elements like textarea to adapt to their input size, directly in CSS. 📐 Adjust form controls automatically to naturally fit their contents. Let the browser handle the layout adjustments, expanding horizontally until they hit a width constraint and vertically until they hit a height constraint. 📈 Improve the user experience by ensuring inputs feel natural, whether someone types a short sentence or a longer paragraph. 📖 Check out the documentation to understand how to implement this property and build adaptable web forms that work in the latest browsers.

  • Streamline your extension development with Chrome DevTools for agents and Modern Web Guidance → https://goo.gle/4zt54lk Building Chrome extensions often means constant context switching: writing code, opening chrome://extensions, clicking refresh, and validating the state. By combining Modern Web Guidance with Chrome DevTools for agents, you can give your AI coding agent platform best practices and the ability to load, test, and debug extensions directly in the browser. Watch our step-by-step guide to setting up these tools and see how they accelerate extension development.
