A new cleaning and dewatering process, born out of decades of research by Virginia Tech's Roe-Hoan Yoon, is now commercially available for coal processing plants. Minerals Refining Company�s patented technology can drastically reduce the amount of coal thrown away in impoundments by extracting salable product from a processing plant�s waste stream.

Xiangtao Meng devised a way to apply a famous class of chemical reactions to cellulose, a natural polymer often used for drug delivery. According to Kevin Edgar, a professor of sustainable biomaterials and Meng�s doctoral adviser, the new method �can get drugs to market, and to patients, that would otherwise fail.�
