About ESHA

The European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA) is a non-profit International Association representing the sector of small hydropower. The association was founded in 1989 as an initiative of the European Commission. ESHA is a founding member of EREC (European Renewable Energy Council), which groups together all main European renewable energy industry and research associations. Since March 2000, ESHA has shared its headquarters with other EREC members in the Renewable Energy House, in Brussels. Continue reading

    The Alliance of Rural Electrification (ARE) has just published a new Study on "Hybrid Mini-Grids for Rural Electrification: Lessons learned". The USAID-financed study is one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date of its kind and provides a complete socio-economical outline of the main existing business models for hybrid mini-grid.

    Following the completion of the SMART project, an Intellegent Energy Europe co-funded programme on "Strategies to proMote smAll-scale hydRoelecTricity production in Europe", a complete handbook on required administrative procedures for small hydro plants in Europe has been published. This can be accessed online at the official SMARThydro website.

    In addition, the project consortium has produced an interactive map marking the number of sites (per region) with a definite potential for hydropower investment. Specifically, the map records sites of potential investment in the countries of Italy,Greece, Norway, Croatia and Austria and is available online.
