In our analysis of global freedom’s decline over the past 17 years, we found that restrictions on freedom of expression are drivers of deterioration. The number of countries & territories that received a 0/4 on media freedom has more than doubled from 14 to 33 since 2005. (5/6)

2022 also proved that authoritarianism is not unbeatable. Corruption & inflexibility plagued autocrats, & regimes in Beijing, Moscow, & Tehran were forced to combat large-scale protests & widespread dissent. (4/6)

Still, the struggle for democracy may be approaching a turning point... #FreedomInTheWorld documented the narrowest gap between score improvements & declines in the past 17 years! Both Colombia & Lesotho were upgraded from Partly Free to Free status. (3/6)

Global freedom declined for the 17th consecutive year as democratic institutions combatted external aggression, as in Ukraine, and suffered from internal attacks, as in Burkina Faso. Coups in Burkina Faso caused a 23-point decline, the largest of 2022. (2/6)

Free Them All: A Political Prisoners Initiative

Salma al-Shehab wasn’t known as an activist when she was detained by Saudi authorities in 2021, but her case now embodies women’s struggle for freedom in Saudi Arabia. Her small but brave acts of solidarity (retweets supporting women's rights) earned her 34 years in prison. (4/5)

Theary Seng, also sentenced in June 2022, pushed back against the corruption & injustice fostered by Cambodian autocrat Hun Sen. She arrived at her sentencing in a Lady Liberty costume, a shining example of the bravery & resistance she hopes to encourage. (3/5)

Safiye Alagaş, a Turkish journalist known for reporting on women’s & Kurdish issues, was imprisoned last June. But Alagaş won't be silenced, proudly proclaiming that she & her cellmates “will not give up the struggle until we find our place in society.” (2/5)
