The purpose of this sociolinguistic survey was to reveal the present-day status of the Rabha language. In order to accomplish this purpose, several specific goals were set: (1) to ascertain the number of the Rabha groups and their dialects; (2) to find out the degree of intelligibility between the existing Rabha dialects and between Rabha and Koch; (3) to investigate the patterns of language use in the Rabha community and the attitudes towards their own language as well as towards other languages spoken in the region; and (4) to see what kind of language development efforts are going on in Rabha.
This survey showed that the Rabha people live in a highly multilingual environment. Many people there reported speaking Assamese, Bangla, Garo and other languages in addition to Rabha. Assamese appears to be the major lingua franca among the Rabha. However, it can by no means be substituted for the mother tongue in the core Rabha areas at least in the foreseeable future.
