Peebles' history of US air-supported covert operations against the Soviet Bloc spans the cold war as far as the fall of Saigon. Drawing on recent scholarship and Soviet-era archives, Peebles, an aerospace historian who is also the author of The Corona Project: America's First Spy Satellites (1997), describes early attempts to set up spy cells behind the Iron Curtain that were doomed by the British spy Kim Philby. Other subjects include Operation Mongoose, clandestine airlines, and details of the CIA's secret spy plane that appeared in the James Bond movie Thunderball. Annotation : 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
