Location of Portugal in Europe
Portugal , officially the Portuguese Republic , is a country in Southwestern Europe . It is a unitary republic comprising mainland Portugal , located on the southwestern portion of the Iberian Peninsula and bordered by Spain to the north and east, and the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. The country has a population of over 11.4 million, and Lisbon, its capital, is the largest city. Portugal's internal waters and territorial sea together account for two-fifths of its territory, and its exclusive economic zone is one of Europe's largest, while its terrain contains a diverse range of landscapes and regional climates.
The western Iberian Peninsula has been inhabited since prehistory , with the earliest signs of settlement dating to between 5500 BC and 5300 BC. Portugal was established as a county of the Kingdom of León in 868, and formally as a kingdom in 1179 as a result of the Reconquista against the Muslims, who had occupied the Iberian Peninsula since 711 . During the Age of Discovery , the kingdom made several advancements in nautical science and maritime exploration to discover new territories and sea routes, which led to the establishment of the Portuguese Empire . The kingdom became a republic in 1910 and was a dictatorship from 1926 until the dictatorship's overthrow in 1974 enabled the full establishment of democracy in 1976.
Portugal is a semi-presidential constitutional unitary republic and multi-party representative democracy with four separate sovereignty bodies : president, government, parliament, and judiciary. It has a unicameral national legislature known as the Assembly of the Republic . Portugal is divided into two autonomous regions and seven regions on the mainland while it remains highly centralised. The Madeira firecrest , Madeira kinglet , or Madeiracrest (Regulus madeirensis ) is a very small passerine bird endemic to the island of Madeira . It is a member of the kinglet family. Before it was recognised as a separate species in 2003, it was classified as a subspecies of the common firecrest . It differs in appearance and vocalisations from its relative, and genetic analysis has confirmed it as a different species. The Madeiran bird has green upperparts, whitish underparts and two white wingbars, and a distinctive head pattern with a black eye stripe, short white supercilium , and a crest that is mainly orange in the male and yellow in the female.
The female Madeira firecrest builds a spherical nest from cobwebs , moss and small twigs, and she incubates the eggs and broods the chicks on her own. Both parents feed the young. This species forages for insects and other small invertebrates in tree heath , laurisilva and other woodland. It is common within its restricted range, and is not considered to be threatened. Ruins of St. John the Baptist Church in Andheri , built by the Portuguese Jesuits in 1579.
Bombay, also called Bom Bahia or Bom Baim in Indo-Portuguese creole , and Mumbai in the local language; is the financial and commercial capital of India and one of the most populous cities in the world . It's also the cosmopolitan city centre of the Greater Bombay Metropolitan Area , and the cultural base of the Bollywood film industry. At the time of the arrival of the Portuguese Armadas , Bombay was an archipelago of seven islands . Between the third century BCE and 1348, the islands came under the control of successive Hindu dynasties. The Delhi Sultanate had been ruling the area, along with Chaul , New Bombay , (Thana ), and Damaon ; with the local administration at Bassein (Vasai) since the raids of Malik Kafur in the Konkan region and across the Indian subcontinent. This territory in North Konkan, along with the Bombay islands were later taken over by the Sultan of Guzerat from 1391 to 1534, when he had declared the end of his suzerainty to Delhi, after the Timurid invasion of it. Growing apprehensive of the power of the Moghal emperor Humayun , Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat was obliged to sign the Treaty of Bassein on 23 December 1534; according to which, the Seven Islands of Bombay, Fort San Sebastian of Bassein in the strategic town of Bassein (Vasai), and its dependencies were offered to the Portuguese East Indies . The places were only later officially surrendered on 25 October 1535, by the Sultan of Guzerat.
The Portuguese in Goa-Anjediva and Bombay-Bassein were actively involved in the foundation and growth of their Latin Christian religion in Bombay and the neighbouring area. They called the island by various names, which finally took the written form Bom Baim , when the islands were leased to several Portuguese officers during their regime. Portuguese Franciscans and Jesuits built several churches in and around Bombay (Mumbai); the prominent ones are the St. Michael's Church at Mahim , St. John the Baptist Church at Andheri , St. Andrew's Church , the Basilica of Mount Bandra (Bombay) at Bandra , the Gloria Church at Byculla , & the Holy Spirit Church Nandakhal at Virar . The Portuguese also built several fortifications around the city, like the Bombay Castle , Castella de Aguada (Castelo da Aguada or Bandra Fort) and Madh Fort . (Full article... )
