Esther Bakewell 1798ko urtarrilaren 6an jaio zen Wakefielden, Robert Bakewell eta haren lehen emazte Apphia Simpsonen seme-alabetatik bosgarrena. Bere aita geologo aitzindaria zen eta bere neba gazteagoa, Frederick Collier Bakewell, asmatzailea. Gutxi dakigu bere bizitzari buruz, Fredericken familiarekin bizi izan zela eta 1873ko uztailaren 21ean Hampsteaden hil zela izan ezik.^[1]^[2]

Bakewellek eleberri bakarra idatzi zuen, Glenwood Manor-House (1857).
