Marital quality and health: A meta-analytic review.

Abstract: This meta-analysis reviewed 126 published empirical articles over the past 50 years describing associations between marital relationship quality and physical health in over 72,000 individuals. Health outcomes included clinical endpoints (objective assessments of function, disease severity, and mortality; subjective health assessments) and surrogate endpoints (biological markers that substitute for clinical endpoints, such as blood pressure). Biological mediators included cardiovascular reactivity and hypothala… Show more

“…These patterns hold for both men and women although SRCs characterized by negativity/strain have somewhat stronger effects on loneliness for men. This differs from prior research that has suggested that women exhibit greater physiological response to negativity in social relations (e.g., Robles et al, 2014), suggesting that gender differences in the consequences of social relations depend on the outcome being examined.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Contrary to a great deal of literature that specifies the impact of intimate partner relationships on physical health (e.g., Robles et al, 2014), we failed to find support for this aspect of our models. While we hypothesized a stronger effect of families on health given prior research findings (Priest et al, 2015(Priest et al, , 2018, we predicted intimate partnerships would also have a significant, if weaker, effect.…”

“…The findings of this study also reveal that not women, but men’s cardiovascular health is more reactive to life course partnership characteristics when biomarkers are used. This is in contrast to previous studies that have investigated marital status and quality using the same biomarkers (CRP, HbA1c, blood pressure) and have found that women’s health was more strongly associated with marital quality ( Robles et al, 2014 ). The gender specific effect of number of transitions on blood pressure and cholesterol level for men points out that cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) to stressful marital interactions might be more pronounced for men.…”
