The Lion King is good because the original animated movie was great, though it does feature stunning CGI that Disney is clearly excited to show off.

Send confirmation emailWhile 2019's The Lion King isn't the worst of Disney's live-action remakes and even has a few good changes to the script with both comedy and the overarching narrative, it still has all the same problems with poor visuals and a script that doesn't do enough to justify the film's existence. It's not impossible to like this film, but as is often the case, there's no reason to watch it over the classic animated film.
This is such a frustrating and POINTLESS remake of one of the best Disney movies of all time! It is a wonder that this made as much money as it did, especially given all the blowback with the CGI from even trailers. Hopefully Mufasa at least expands the lore a bit.
Remaking the Lion King isn't necessarily a bad idea, but oh wow was it a bad reality. The CGI fights the premise of human-esque animals the whole way, and the voice actors never do anything but sound like the big name celebrities you know they are.
This movie lacks the charm, heart, emotion, and whimsy of the original animated Lion King. The CGI is pretty well done but it unfortunately makes the movie feel soulless and emotionless in comparison to the original Lion King.
What really is the point of a live-action Lion King remake if everything in it is still animated. Why do people need photorealistic animated animals to sing and talk without any expressions at all? This is a weird movie that doesn't need to exist at all.
The movie that established that when Disney says they're making a "live-action remake," what they mean is, "We're making a CGI-filled movie that removes any joy or whimsy or expression that animation can provide, but we're still gonna behave like the movie is animated otherwise and not write anything new that would work better in the revised medium."
