ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Global coalition forces intercepted eight bomb-laden drones over Erbil on Wednesday night, with no casualties reported, Kurdistan Region counterterrorism authorities said.

The Erbil-based Counterterrorism Directorate said coalition forces downed the drones over the Kurdistan Region's capital between 8:53 p.m. and 9:20 p.m.

Footage submitted to The New Region showed projectiles flying over the city before they were intercepted.

The incident came a day after US President Donald Trump hosted Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at the White House, describing it as “a good meeting.”

Ahead of the visit on Sunday, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq - a network of Iran-aligned Iraqi Shiite militias - rejected Zaidi's trip to Washington. Some Iran-backed groups have claimed responsibility for attacks on the Kurdistan Region since the onset of the US-Iran war in late February.

Washington and Tehran have exchanged strikes over the past several days, with Trump saying last week that the US-Iran peace deal was “over,” just 21 days after the two sides signed a truce.

Since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran, the Kurdistan Region, despite maintaining a neutral stance, has come under hundreds of drone and missile attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, energy facilities, and Peshmerga forces. The attacks have continued at times even when ceasefire agreements between Washington and Tehran were in effect.

In May, Tehran declared the Kurdistan Region a site of “hostile bases” under its security doctrine, warning that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had been given the same designation, making both subject to preemptive strikes.

That month, an Iranian ballistic missile strike on a Peshmerga base in Erbil province's Soran administration killed at least six Peshmerga fighters and wounded 30 others. Kurdistan Regional Government leaders strongly condemned the attack.

Iran's consul general in Erbil, Faramarz Asadi, told The New Region on Sunday that Tehran has “never” attacked the Kurdistan Region, insisting its strikes have targeted only Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.
