id Interview 03:20 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action (6 comments)
Next-Gen has a pretty good interview up with id's Todd Hollenshead who talks about id's new game, how Doom 3 / Quake 4 sold, engine stuff and oh-so much more. Here's a taste:
Next Gen: Tell us about the new IP.

[Laughs] It's new, it's not Doom, Wolfenstein, or Quake. We're working on it now. Apart from it's going to going to be on a new John Carmack engine, from what I've seen internally, I think it's going to be met with a great deal of anticipation.

Why the secrecy? Previously, id's been extremely open with what they're doing.

There's not really any secrecy about it, it's just that we don't want to go out and say things that end up not being accurate later. And right now, the technology is in the R&D; phase, so we don't want to go out and say things that will later to not be accurate, and have people say, 'well I thought you said this,' and 'why didn't that happen—'

Gotta say that I'm happy I don't need to travel this weekend...

Today's question:

Do you think it's too soon to make games set in the Middle East? (Just think WW2 type stuff)

NVIDIA Quad SLI Drivers (official) 04:40 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - hardware: NVIDIA (6 comments)
The poop from Daily Tech (thanks PJ) is that NVIDIA has released WHQL certified ForceWare 91.45 drivers for Quad SLI, should you be extreme enough (cough) to run a Quad SLI set-up. Note that if you have an Alienware of Dell Quad System, you'll need to wait for a tweaked driver release (according to DT). Previously, only beta drivers were available.

Halo Movie Director Named 04:00 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: Xbox 360 (23 comments)
After all the hooplah, Microsoft has named the director for the Halo movie:

Large names, ranging from Peter Jackson to Uwe Boll, have been bandied about as the director of the upcoming Halo movie. Today, Xbox.com revealed that the official director for the Universal film would be South African Neill Blomkamp. The Afrikaner is not as large a name as many would think would be attached to the project, but Blomkamp has been acclaimed for his work in short film (Alive in Joburg) and television commercials (Citroen - Alive with Technology).
I've never heard of him either.

Supreme Commander Interview 02:56 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Real-Time Strategy (3 comments)
Shacknews wrangled up a nice five page interview with Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games who talks (among other things) about its upcoming RTS, Supreme Commander:

Shack: In terms of the balance side of gameplay, one thing you've frequently mentioned is that you're not a big fan of the rock/paper/scissors model of balance. Can you speak a bit on the distinctions between the three factions in Supreme Commander, both in gameplay and background?

Chris Taylor: Well, with rock/paper/scissors, you create a unit that very specifically has a weakness against another unit. Imagine in a computer wargame, you wouldn't really create a rock/paper/scissors, you'd create a circle that has twelve components, or ten components or eight components, and you'd say this beats this beats this, until it goes all the way around and the snake eats its own tail. That system means you have to look away from reality, and nothing can be superior just because. In real life, there are things--units and vehicles and equipment--that are completely superior. They have no weakness. There are examples, where if you have the XYZ, it's the best there is and nobody can beat that. And why do you have the XYZ? Because you have superior technology.

Chris then goes on to say that the Allies won WW2 by zerging.

Spore Interviews 01:43 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Simulation (1 comment)
Both IGN and Gamespot are sporting interviews with Will Wright about Spore. Here's a slice from IGN:

IGN: What are your favorite things about the game?

Will Wright: It kind of depends, week by week, what we have working. And how well it's working. I've been playing the civilization game a lot recently, playing diplomatic, which I'm finding kind of fun. It's very much an economic game. I like the space game a lot for the exploration. In the space game you're spinning a lot of different plates as you play it. I can be developing colonies over here while I'm terra forming over there, while I'm developing alliances over here... I like all the different varieties of things you're doing in the space game. The creature game, the real fun there is making this bizarre creature and taking it out into the world and test driving it. So every level has its own attractions.

Happy Humpday, humpsters...

I'm almost at that point where it's time to get a new PC... I keep checking online for deals and stuff even though I probably won't get anything for a couple months. That's what I keep telling myself at least!

Today's question:

What's your favorite place to buy new hardware?

It can be for parts, complete systems or whatever.
