Rock out to StarCraft 07:23 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Real-Time Strategy (1 comment)
The Battle.net MP3 player now features the soundtrack to StarCraft! The Broodwar intro is included.

There's no official word on StarCraft 2 yet, but a group of modders is making a pretty tight 3D conversion.

Project Offset Scores 360 Publisher 07:02 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: Xbox 360 (3 comments)
TeamXbox has the poop that the gang making Project Offset scored a publishing deal on the 360.

Last night, Offset Software updated the news section of the Project Offset website, revealing that they have secured a "major" publisher for their fantasy first-person shooter. Travis Stringer, co-founder and lead artist on Project Offset, posted the following message:

Finally all moved in! We are looking for talented programmers and artists to join our team. We are now backed by a major publisher but will not be disclosing the details just yet. Visit our jobs page for more information on available positions.

If you need a refresher for what Project Offset is, visit their download page and snag the movies.

Halo Weekly Update 06:42 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: Xbox 360 (0 comments)
In this installment of the Bungie weekly update, Franky gets to play a little Halo 2 Vista:

I've also been practicing on Halo 2 for Vista which looks amazing right now. Slippery smooth frame rate and very high resolution graphics. I do NOT want to get used to playing on a mouse and keyboard though, so I am sticking to using the 360 controller for the moment. Of course the best part is playing against the Vista port team who ain't exactly awesome at it (yet) so I get the minor joy of pwning noobs.

Counter-Strike Source Changes afoot 06:37 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action (2 comments)
The latest Valve weekly update reports that some changes are afoot for Counter-Strike Source:

Soon, we'll be releasing the first in a series of updates to Counter-Strike: Source which will be focused on moving the core Counter-Strike gameplay forward.

The first update will include an updated version of the map Train, which will feature an HDR lighting pass, some minor layout changes, and a number of small bugfixes.

The second facet of this release will be a completely reworked radar system. There will be a significant change to the aesthetics of the radar, but there are also some fairly significant gameplay ramifications to the new system. One example: when you look directly at an enemy for a long enough time for their name to appear on your screen, everyone on your team will be able to see that enemy in the radar. We're planning on releasing this first update in about two weeks.

Stubbs the Zombie Post Boredom 06:30 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action (5 comments)
Gamasutra posted a post-mortem for Stubbs The Zombie which was written by Alex Seropian. Alex, as you might recall was a co-founder of Bungie:

Three years ago, after leaving the helm at Bungie I found myself without a job and on the sidelines of the game industry. It was weird. After spending six months tooling around at home, I realized I had to get out of the house and do something—be productive, set an example for my kids, take over the world—that kind of thing. Games are what I know and love, but I faced a real dilemma in trying to figure out how to get back to making games on my own terms.

To be an independent developer in the current climate of publisher consolidation and rising costs seemed impossible, but somehow Wideload was created. I challenged myself to create a company with a set of commandments essential to my personal and professional happiness.

Better to rule in Hell then serve in Heaven, I guess.

I think a really fun game would be Battlefied: Camelot. EA owns both brands, so lets make it happen.

Today's question:

If you could combine any two games into one, which would you pick?

WoW Burning Crusade Preview 06:37 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: MMOG (7 comments)
PC.IGN conjured up a new hands-on look at Blizzard's upcoming cash-cow expansion, World of WarCraft: The Burning Crusade.
Raids are a big part of high level gameplay. They become necessary when players find themselves challenged to complete quests full of monstrously powerful baddies incapable of being taken on without the strong support and love of a few friends. In days past, raiders would need around 40 of these chummy fighters to stand a chance. The days of needing to pump up guild recruitment pressure to gain the bodies necessary to take on the biggest challenges are about to change. With the Burning Crusade addition, players will now only need to gather about 25 others to run screaming into danger's fat face.
Zerg for the win.

CES to Replace E3? 05:21 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: General News (15 comments)
The gang behind the popular Consumer Electronics Show might be putting on a big expo for games:

The CEA has formed an advisory board that will gauge feedback on the viability of a show that would cater to smaller companies that are looking for exposure after the collapse of E3.

"Since ESA decided to eliminate the E3 event in its known format, we have been deluged with inquiries on whether we could fill the tradeshow needs of smaller video entertainment companies," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA. "Our executive board met yesterday and unanimously asked staff to explore ways that we can help the gaming community."

I'd be down for that.

Panorama Live! Arcade for Vista? 05:15 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: General News (14 comments)
Shacknews is quoting an anonymous source from Microsoft stating that the company is working on a service for Windows Vista that is similar to Xbox Live Arcade!

Shacknews has learned from reputable sources who wish to remain nameless that Microsoft plans to introduce what seems to be a Windows gaming service called "Panorama." Apparently, Panorama will be a part of Windows Vista and will act essentially as Xbox Live Arcade for Windows. PC gamers will be able to not only play Live Arcade games, but will also be able to engage in multiplayer gaming versus gamers playing on the Xbox 360 version of the service. It does not appear that Panorama emulates the Xbox 360 environment, which suggests that developers creating cross-platform compatible Live Arcade games may have to release two versions, one for each platform. However, Microsoft tools such as XNA should expedite this process.
Hopefully, that's just a codename.

Prey Patch News 01:26 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action (5 comments)
Not that I had any problems with the game, but 3D Realms posted a new weekly monthly update for Prey which reveals what will be included in the upcoming v1.1 patch. Besides the bug fixes, some new content is in the pipeline also:

There's also new content for Prey coming soon -- still in the process of finalizing the new maps. We've read online that some people have requested maps that function well as 1v1 maps. So, we've taken that to heart and have been working on four maps that work better with a smaller number of people 2-4 players. Of course, you can still play with more than four in the maps, but they can get pretty insane.

Also, we're adding in six new player characters:

- Four female characters: Jen, Elhuit, Mother, and Becky (the blond victim you see occasionally on slabs in the single player Prey)

- Two Hunter characters: Hunter and Elite Hunter

Similar to the 1.1 patch, no ETA on the release on this, other than soon. We're still working on finishing the maps and play balancing them. We'll announce the release date for this, once we're closer to final. Watch 3DR's page, or Prey.com for that info.

Yes, this additional content will be released on the 360 as well. Further details about possible points cost of the extra content for the 360 has yet to be determined.

Free content on the PC for the win.

PSP Price Cut? 01:15 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: PSP (16 comments)
So says the latest CNN Money Game Over. "While the PS3 prices remain in the stratosphere, it looks like Sony is cooking up one bargain for the holiday season. This week's Game Over column on CNNMoney reports that the company is planning to cut the price of the PSP - possibly with a game bundled in. Don't expect PS2 prices to fall, though. The column notes that those aren't likely until next year."

At this point, they should just give them away.

Bully Trailer 01:15 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: PS2 (24 comments)
IGN has the debut of the Bully trailer which runs for a little over a minute. Bully, as you might recall, was a favorite with anti-videogame advocates.

"This probably isn't the game you thought it was." At least, that's the sentiment being expressed in various newspaper write-ups all over the country regarding Bully, Rockstar Games' rediscovered actioner for the PlayStation 2. Unheard of since E3 2005 and believed to be grounded in a number of outrageous and unconfirmed scenarios that had opponents screaming about thing before the truth was unveiled, Bully puts players in control of 15 year-old Jimmy Hopkins -- a boy who has just begun his first year in the New England-based Bullworth Academy, and a guy who's charged with the mission of ridding the school of a number of its undesirable elements.
Wow, talk about going overboard. I doubt it'll even get an "M" rating.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Preview 12:56 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Role-Playing (3 comments)
The Neverwinter Nights Vault swung by GenCon to check out Neverwinter Nights 2. Included, is a little Q&A; action with Feargus "FU" Urquhart and Josh Sawyer. Here's what they've been working on since E3:

1) Stream-lining the mouse controls so that it is primarily right-click driven. In the current iteration of the user interface, most commands (move, open, examine, access the character's stats, etc.) are invoked via right-click.

2) Player character models have received major attention. Feargus said that they weren't too happy with the character models at E3, and they have spent a lot of time improving them. (Judging by my limited experience with the game, the models look great.)

ZOMG! It's Friday! =D

Today's question:

Do you think it's hypocritical for Epic to charge $59.95/$69.95 for Gears of War after they complained that publishers were charging too much for next-gen games?
