Bizarre Creations On Geometry Wars Clones 07:51 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: General News (5 comments)
Bizarre Creations recently requested that independent developers cease work on their various Geometry Wars 'clones,' and now a statement from the studio explains the reasoning behind that request:

As GW:RE is so freely available, it has had an extremely wide exposure. And as it is (on the surface) a simple concept, it is easy to imitate - at least superficially. The issue that we have with the proliferation of GW:RE 'clone' games is their own lack of originality - particularly on the visual front. Only hardcore gamers will be aware of any differences between a clone and the original game beyond the visual level. This potentially takes sales away from our product and weakens our brand - especially if-and-when we decide to launch a version of GW:RE on a platform where a clone is already available. All too often we have seen people confused, calling our game by the name of a clone, and a clone by our name.

In this day and age, coming up with an original brand is extremely difficult and rare, and retaining ownership of the IP to that title, especially as an independent developer, is rarer still. As a relatively small developer, we survive by the originality, quality and reputation of our titles, and the income that they generate. No income means no funds to support our staff and overheads - and this struggle for income is why there are so few independent companies surviving today. Obviously it would be great to provide games for free, but commercial reality does not allow this, and with GW:RE we felt we were working with a nice balanced approach to this, with the generous demo and low price point.

Battlefield 2 1.4 Patch Delayed 07:40 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: Action (4 comments)
Some of you may have expected to see a Battlefield 2 patch released today, but as is typically the case with patches for this ever so bugged game it has been delayed:

The Battlefield 1.4 patch files that were scheduled for general release today have been resubmitted for another review and as such will not be released today. I am aware that many of you already have these files and we ask that you please do not release these files until we send a update.

The review of these files will be a 24-hour period, and expect to receive an email tomorrow with details on how DICE want to proceed.

My experiences with Battlefield 2 and EA's patch support has really put me off Battlefield 2142.

I'm suprised the Wii is kicking the Playstation 3 around like an unwanted red-headed step-child in the poll. I know we're not the center of the Sony universe around these parts, but we aren't exactly Nintendo town either.

Today's question:

What don't you like about the PS3?

Too Human or Too Stupid? 05:42 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Vaporware (24 comments)
From the Duke Nukem Forever department of game development comes word that Silicon Knights may be switching game engines for Too Human, a title that's been in development for almost 10 years.
At the X05 event in Amsterdam last October, developer Silicon Knights unveiled a short Too Human trailer. This past May, a longer trailer of the Norse-mythology-meets-sci-fi-themed actioner was released on Xbox Live Marketplace. Meanwhile, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Denis Dyack, president of Too Human developer Silicon Knights, demonstrated the game to the press.

The increasing visibility of Too Human gave many hope that, after nearly a decade in development, it might be edging toward completion. However, over the weekend, reports began to bubble up that the title had hit another roadblock. "Sources tell AMN Xbox 360 that Silicon Knights...is ditching the Unreal Engine 3 for its upcoming Xbox 360-exclusive title, Too Human, in favor of coding its own engine, on account that the Unreal Engine does not work well with the Xbox 360 hardware," said Advancedmn.

William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Scott Bakula, and Kate Mulgrew to Reprise Captain Roles 07:22 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: Space Shooter (26 comments)
The Trek captains are uniting for Bethesda's Star Trek: Legacy:

Bethesda Softworks announced today that all five actors who portrayed the STAR TREK series captains -- William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Scott Bakula, Avery Brooks, and Kate Mulgrew -- will provide voiceovers in the STAR TREK: Legacy video game. The collaboration marks the first time the five actors have participated in a single STAR TREK project together.

"I am delighted to have the chance to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Trek with my fellow captains by providing our voices to STAR TREK: Legacy," said Shatner. "Bethesda Softworks has done an excellent job in creating an exciting game that stays true to Star Trek's roots and accurately incorporates elements from each series."

STAR TREK: Legacy is in development for both the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC. STAR TREK: Legacy is scheduled to launch this fall under license from CBS Consumer Products. The STAR TREK franchise, which debuted with the Original Series in 1966, will celebrate its 40th anniversary this fall.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have the five actors who portrayed the STAR TREK captains take part in this project," said Todd Vaughn, vice president of development, Bethesda Softworks. "Their participation, especially since it takes place during the series' 40th anniversary, will add to the fun and excitement of the game and emphasizes our commitment to provide fans with the most authentic STAR TREK experience possible."

The five actors will reprise their roles from their respective series as follows:

  • William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk from the STAR TREK: The Original Series - 1966-1969

  • Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard from STAR TREK: The Next Generation - 1987-1994

  • Avery Brooks as Captain Benjamin Lafayette Sisko from STAR TREK: Deep Space Nine -1993-1999

  • Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway from STAR TREK: Voyager - 1995-2001

  • Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer in STAR TREK: Enterprise - 2001-2005

STAR TREK: Legacy places you in the role of the Admiral of a task force of warships, which you control in small and large-scale battles. Test your strategic and tactical skills in real-time combat featuring over 60 authentic spaceships, full damage modeling, and spectacular visual effects. Play through the single-player campaign or in the extensive multiplayer mode with a group of friends online.

The compelling storyline in Legacy spans the entire STAR TREK Universe, including the Original Series, STAR TREK: The Next Generation, STAR TREK: Deep Space Nine, STAR TREK: Voyager, and STAR TREK: Enterprise eras. STAR TREK: Legacy is being developed under the direction of Bethesda Softworks at the studios of Mad Doc Software, creators of the highly successful and critically acclaimed STAR TREK Armada II.

Survivor Creator Inspired by Video Games 03:44 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: General News (6 comments)
Mark Burnett, creator of such hit reality tv shows as Intercourse Island Survivor was inspired by game theory:

While tweaking Survivor, he closely studied John Nash's game theory in order to better engineer the hysteria and emotional blowouts of each season's finale.

"What Nash's theory predicts is that whenever you have a group of people competing, they collude to squeeze one guy out, again and again, until there's only two guys left," Burnett notes. "Yet when there are only two of us left, we're surprised when one of us fucks each other over. That's the fun part. It surprised John Nash himself, but it happens every time."

Make Your Own 360 Game 03:29 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: Xbox 360 (16 comments)
Later this month Microsoft will be releasing a free version of its XNA Game Studio Express for end users to download and make games with. Here's the poop from TeamXbox:

So how will Microsoft let you create the next Geometry Wars or a total conversion mod like Counter-Strike? XNA Game Studio Express is the answer. This new set of tools, which are based on the XNA Platform, will let gamers create their own Xbox 360 games and ultimately break into the video-game scene.

Although users will need more tools to create a video game, it is this special edition of the XNA Studio tools that truly makes indie Xbox 360 development a reality by turning a regular Xbox 360 video-game system into a development kit similar to those black Xbox 360s used by licensed developers.

So what do you need to start making a game for the Xbox 360? First, you need a PC running Windows XP, which will be the only retail software you'll need since the rest of the required tools can be obtained free of charge.

Second, you need a copy of Visual Studio, which also has a free edition called Visual Studio Express, available for download here. Finally, you need the XNA Game Studio Express, which will be available for free—first in beta form on Aug. 30, 2006, and later this year as a full-featured final version.

They have an interview, movie and download links as well.

In other 360 news, they previewed Bullet Witch, which Atari is importing from Japan.
