Tiberium Wars: The Novel? 16:25 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Mail News You know you're a big-league computer game when there's a mass-market paberback written in your universe... And it looks like C&C; can join the ranks of Diablo, Doom, Myst, Warcraft, and so many others. Sledgehammer70 over at BigTimeTournaments let me know that he noticed Amazon.com has a listing for a book by Keith R.A. Decandido entitled - brace yourselves - Command & Conquer (tm): Tiberium Wars, with a release date of March 24, 2007.
Sledgehammer dug further and managed to find this entry on the publisher's homepage; the "enlarge image" link is seriously broken, but I managed to snag the large-size image with some clever wgetting:
Yes, "The official novel of the best-selling real-time strategy franchise from Electronic Arts". The fact that the image is marked "For Solicitation Only" probably means the book isn't ready yet and the decision to publish isn't final (though we can guess it must've gotten somewhere to be listed on Amazon).
Looks like EA is pulling out all the stops on the C&C; franchise this time around! Interesting realisation: the book is probably not going to come before the game, or at least not very long before the game, so I think it's safe to assume that EA plans to have C&C3; in our hands by the end of March.
New Poll: Wither Apoc? 20:18 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Mail News We've got a fun new poll up for you today, but first, the results of the old poll, which asked you to pick your favourite Kane:
Kane (TD) 614
Kane (TS) 632
Kane (C&C; 3) 933
Citizen Kane 285
Orson Welles goes away disappointed, but coming out of left-field to win the thing is C&C3;'s Kane - a Kane we've barely seen! Looks like people have some high hopes for third time around being the lucky third for our favourite jovial sociopath.
In response to innumerable conspiracy theories, our new poll asks a very simple and pointed question: What really happened to Apoc? Vote on the right, but chose wisely, grasshopper, for your choice will decide the fate of... well, nothing, really. My money's on Old Hand Apoc joining his main man Long John Kane in rousing high-seas piracy, but the opinions of this poster are not necessarily the opinions of Planet Command & Conquer and/or its fully owned subsidiaries.
Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Josh Holloway (LOST), Michael Ironside (Splinter Cell, Top Gun), Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back), Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica), Ivana Bozilovic (Wedding Crashers), Shauntay Hinton (Unfinished Business) make up the ensemble cast of C&C; 3: Tiberium Wars, and considering their other geek-centric roles, the developer's [sic] know their audience very well.
(IMDB links added by yours truly). GameSpot also has an interview with Mike Verdu discussing the star power, casting choices, and giving some interesting details on the campaign's storyline and characters.
GS: With Josh Holloway, Michael Ironside, and Billy Dee Williams, you have actors known for playing some rough-and-tumble characters. Are we going to see any of the cast break out from their typecast roles?
MV: I think so. Some of the roles are quite nuanced. For example, as GDI Director Boyle, Billy Dee Williams plays a deeply insecure character with an absolutist worldview who becomes the leader of the free world as the planet is consumed by a global firestorm. As the GDI campaign progresses, Director Boyle slowly begins to crack under the extreme pressure of running a superpower in wartime, exposing his deep flaws in a way that could endanger all of humanity.
Good times ahead for C&C; FMV fans... I know I'll follow Lt. Rasczak into hell and back. And Lando Calrissian's on the team, too? Hell yes.
C&C3; Multilanguage DVD? 18:49 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Mail News A mole* I've got planted in Germany has given me word of the possibility that there will be One DVD To Rule Them All when it comes to the C&C3; release... In other words, that there will be a multilingual DVD with several languages on-disc. What does that mean for you? Well, first of all, hopefully it will mean no Generals-style "ten different versions of each patch, one for each language", although since they didn't have that for BFME and BFMEII I'm guessing that's a given.
For those of you whose primary language isn't English, but who live in an English-speaking country, or who can understand English well but live in a non-English speaking country, it might mean a bit more. This is pure speculation, but people like my buddy Renardin, who's Belgian and would normally be only able to buy the French-language version of a game, ought to be able to buy C&C3; and then decide for himself, either at install-time or maybe even at run-time, that he wants to get all the cutscenes and stuff in the original English, thereby avoiding the problem.
Sounds like a good deal for our English-speaking Euro friends who so often get shafted with horrible overdubs or awful translations (we even get it in Canada... Oblivion came with both English & French manuals, and the French translations are atrocious).
An Act of War Update 12:11 PST | Dario | Print News | Mail News After quite a while without news, the team over at An Act of War has posted a rather big update, showing various Iraqi units and structures. There's a good deal of in-game screenshots, too.
Zone Troopers Have HELMETS! 11:50 PST | Dario | Print News | Mail News After many cries from the community (and some special effort by HeXetic), the C&C; 3 design team has decided to give helmets to Zone Troopers. Why the need for helmets, you say? Well, it doesn't make much sense for Tiberium-resistant infantry to have uncovered heads, leaving them to the mercy of various Tiberium gasses.
My personal modification of the Zone Trooper concept art.
Designer Diary 3: The Interface 19:26 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Mail News (Thanks, Stryc9) Designer diary number 3 is now up on GameSpot. In this issue, Mike Verdu discusses the new UI system to be featured in C&C3;, an interface that combines the best aspects of the sidebar with the best aspects of the traditional context-sensitive RTS interface. There are three new pics; first one shows some tanks on the prowl through what appears to be a village straight out of Fallout, number two shows a new angle on the Leipzig demo base-battle, and number three is a breakdown of every piece of the UI, with legend.
I've attached the legend to the UI breakdown image, but be sure to read the whole article to get the "why" rather than just the "what". I know I'm happy to see the return of the ability to shut off power to select buildings.
For the students of minimalism among us, FatJoe brings us this pair of wallpapers that have no chance of winning the contest, but what they heck, it's all fun and games anyways.
But where are my manners? Surely I ought to post the wallpapers I originally used to start the contest? Here you go, then, for completeness' sake.
Throw together a nice widescreen wallpaper before Monday night (the 16th) and you've still got a shot at winning the prize! Check out the competition in the Widescreen Wallpaper Challenge Gallery.
5 new C&C3; Screenshots 8:49 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Mail News (Thanks, Firefightwarrior!) Five new C&C3; screenshots went live over at IGN yesterday, and these are definitely a cut above the rest, showing a lot of map detail, with plenty of burnt-out buildings and real Tiberium-wasteland looking stuff filling the map.
I think you'll agree with me when I say that these shots look very promising.
Further XWIS Downtime 7:14 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Mail News DonCarlo lets me know that the maintenance performed yesterday went fine, but XWIS server C still needs a disk controller upgrade that will be performed sometime today, affecting Tiberian Sun and Renegade online play. Watch the Strike-Team website for updates on the maintenance.
