Mailbag Update 8.10.07

We have no excuse.

Despite Steve's best efforts, Charles still has his job.

From Gunrocck308:

why are u guys doing so little coverage on the new ages of empires expansion. Remember this site was started for pc games and then moved on to bigger and better things. instead of covering that in your pc section u cover call of duty 4 a traditional console game that nobody is going to play on the pc . its in my opinion that ages is one of the best pc games ever made, way better than those games were you have to level up your unicorn to defeat the warlocks (***).

This is more Steve's territory than anyone else's, but there's an informative interview up here, as well as a new video here.

But to address your point that we're not covering PC games, I'd try and find a better game to choose as an example than Call of Duty 4. If you remember (which you apparently don't), Call of Duty is a franchise rooted on the PC platform. Infinity Ward, the developer behind CoD4, made the first Call of Duty, a title released only on PC.

Since then the franchise branched to consoles, with Big Red One (Treyarch), Finest Hour (Spark), Call of Duty 3 (Treyarch again), and a few mobile / handheld titles. In 2005, Infinity Ward released Call of Duty 2 on PC and as an Xbox 360 launch title. More or less, that's when the franchise grabbed the attention of the console masses, which might explain why you're confused as to where it started.

While Infinity Ward (or Activision) is clearly using the Xbox 360 version of CoD4 as the marketing lead, I would assume PC gamers like myself are still very interested in the title. I certainly wouldn't say "nobody is going to play" as you boldly claim.

Despite the inaccuracy of your mail, your parting line still made me laugh. Good stuff.

From COJ:

"Admit it; you've always wanted a little gremlin that followed you around telling you how awesome you were, no matter how many times you put a boot to its face."

-from Erik Brudvig's review of Overlord

^^^ did someone drop you on your head when you were born ? I know people like you that seem to have hate engrained in them and its really psychotic; you should seek help and revert to tamer adventure games where you actually have to use the brain instead of the reflexes..assuming your brain is still intact from so many years of pathetic meaningless violent images and gameplay that you have apparantly subjected it to.

I think I will refer this to PETA as well ;) ( pooooor gremlins someone needs to stick up for them too ! )

cccccccccccccya

COJ, I understand your concern. Nobody wants to harm innocent animals, unless we're hungry. Then we beat the crap out of them until they turn into steak.

As for PETA, I'm not sure if they have a gremlin rights department.

And Erik, I assure you, did not get dropped on his head. I asked him, and his response was "No," a quizzical look, and a slap to his forehead after I told him why I asked.

From Joe:

In the review of Osfront by Zxylon5689 ...

http://rr.pc.ign.com/rrview/pc/red_orchestra_ostfront_41_45/784872/40898/

He says ...

"I was annoyed to hear people as where the targeting recticle was."

I think he means "ask" not "as" in that sentence.

You know that's a reader review, right?

Regardless, I admire your editing spirit. Let it also be known that Zxylon5689 also screwed up reticule's spelling.

It's clear the reviewer also enjoys "the total realistic gameply."

Really? Does that mean you enjoy the way the game pursues itself?

From Elisha:

wheneva i play the sims 2 after 1o minutes my computer cuts out on me. could u tell me the cause of this and why its hapning?

Probably aliens. If you plan on investigating the matter, I'd choose to investigate either the cause or why "its hapning," but not both. It'll save time.

From Kristoffer:

What about Alan Wake? That game showed some really good potential in last years E3, what happend?

Is it cancelled? One of my most anticipated games anyway.

Don't worry, it's not cancelled. It wasn't showcased at E3 because Microsoft wanted to focus their attention on their 2007 lineup.

From John:

I am buying a new pc, Is Alienware still good since merging with Dell? Also should i get a physX card, or spend that money on more ram? thanks

Alienware seems fine so far. We just bought some new gaming rigs from them for the office, and they've worked quite well so far.

As for the PhysX versus RAM, I'd definitely go RAM. Save the physics card for another day.

From OP

ou all need to be fired, not just Charles. Respond to the friggin' mailbox! The fact that we have gone thru E3 without an update to the mailbox is at best shocking.

P.S. You claimed last time you would do a better job. Lies. All lies.

Your truth hit us in the face like arctic water.
