Conflict: Denied Ops Preview
IGN got to spend some quality time with Conflict: Denied Ops, the latest title in the Conflict series. This one offers up mayhem for multiple players:

The basic gameplay premise behind Denied Ops arises from the different styles the two main characters offer. The first is a sniper named Graves. Long range, deliberate fire is his method of destruction. His partner, Lang, is more of a run and gunner. He carries an automatic machine gun and prefers to get into the thick of the action. To keep things within the idea of having two distinct characters, you won't be able to find and pick up new weapons en route. Instead, an upgrade system is in place between levels. Each upgrade can be toggled on or off with the d-pad on consoles. Graves gets things like a camera attachment or a shotgun to protect him in close combat. Lang gets even more destructive with things like a rocket launcher. Nice.

With these two character types, making use of the duo effectively is the key to victory. Playing as Graves in a small tunnel probably won't work out too well. If one player does get killed, the other has a set amount of time to bring him back with an adrenaline shot. This isn't an endless life giving tool, though. Each time you bring your partner back, the amount of time you have to do it the next go around before he bleeds out goes down. This count resets with each new level, but if you aren't careful at the beginning of a stage you may find things going haywire at the end.

Conflict: Denied Ops is due out early next year for the PC, XBox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Sony Moves Forward With EverQuest Movie
Variety reports that Michael "300" Gordon has been chosen to write the script for a movie based on EverCrack:

Sony is moving forward with plans to turn its wildly popular online role-playing game "EverQuest" into a feature, tapping "300" scribe Michael Gordon to pen the adaptation.

Former Marvel Studios topper Avi Arad will produce the pic for Columbia Pictures.

Bigscreen version of the massively popular multiplayer game has been in development for several years, but Gordon is the first scribe to take a crack at the material.

Sony Online Entertainment published the original version of the fantasy title in 1999, with a sequel following in 2004.

In the game, players create a character they use to explore the world of Norrath, where they interact with other players or fight off creatures while going on quests for treasure.

Diablo 3: What Would Bill Roper Do?
Over at CVG they've posted part of an interview conducted recently with Bill Roper, brain behind Hellgate: London. The segment in question features Bill's views on how Diablo 3 should be made:

It would be that challenge of giving the Diablo players the things that they'd expect... I think with Diablo, for example, the camera angle is a big part of it. I think with the Diablo series there is a level of expectation about only using the mouse to move.

I think people that are hardcore Diablo fanatics... people that, if you are making Diablo 3, you are making that game very, very specifically for. There are some things that they are going to want.

Inside Lionhead, The Making Of Fable 2
Latest Lionhead vid now available:

Currently recovering from the studios 10th Anniversary bash, which included several man hours to create elaborate costumes, fireworks, and an all-around good time, the team is hard at work on Fable 2 for Xbox 360, the highly-anticipated follow up to the best-selling, Xbox exclusive Fable. Members of the CTG took time out of their busy development schedules to describe in detail what it takes to be a geek, as well as create the tools and technology that Lionhead is using to create the unique gameplay of Fable 2, such as the one-button combat system and crescendo action sequences. The diary, which runs a little more than seven minutes in length, and is intercut with a recap of the 10th Anniversary Party, includes anecdotes and laugh-out-loud commentary from programmers, staging designers, producers and a technical master chef; who describe how CTGs work feeds back into the development of Fable 2, and the case of the missing fog machine.

Free Toyota Yaris Game Driving Onto Live
Hitting Live some time today is a free Yaris game from Toyota that has you driving around in the eponymous car, collecting coins, and shooting weird fat men on tricycles:

Among other new features, the new Toyota Yaris has a giant tentacle that reaches out of its roof to shoot enemies as it races through a futuristic tunnel, sometimes within inches of soaring fireballs. The tentacle is not standard on the new models: this Yaris car was devised by a video game company rather than automobile engineers.

The shooting car is the central character of a new Xbox game called Yaris that Toyota will introduce today. The game will be offered free to all Xbox 360 console owners in the United States and Canada, who can download it from Xbox Lives service. It is also the first Xbox game created by an advertiser to be distributed over Xbox Live.

People can time shift, they can do all sorts of different things to avoid advertising, said Kim McCullough, corporate manager for marketing communications at Toyota. Thats why we have to move beyond traditional advertising to do things that are really engaging for people.

A Toyota Tacoma World of Warcraft ad is also doing the rounds.

Two Top Games Added To Xbox 360 Bundles
Forza 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance will be packed in with all Xbox 360s from the end of this month:

Xbox is rewarding holiday console buyers this season with two free games! Hot on the heels of a price reduction for all Xbox 360 consoles, Microsoft is now giving holiday buyers even more value by including two great games with every Xbox 360 console and Xbox 360 Elite, a retail savings of $90.

The acclaimed Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance will both be included for the recently reduced prices of $349.99 for Xbox 360 and $449.99 for Xbox 360 Elite. Both bundles will be available at your favorite game retailer by the end of October.

Xbox 360 offers the best value this holiday, and Xbox 360 is the only place you can play the greatest line-up of titles in videogame history. This line-up includes Halo 3, which became the fastest-selling video game ever and is making history as one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time.

Halo 3 is just one title in an incredible holiday line-up that is only available on Xbox 360. Starting with Madden NFL 08, Xbox 360 has an unprecedented string of no less than seven blockbuster titles, each expected to sell at least a million units, including BioShock, the record-breaking Halo 3, Project Gotham Racing 4, Mass Effect, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Xbox 360 is home to the most critically acclaimed next-generation games according to Metacritic.com, the leading aggregator of game reviews from more than 100 publications. Of the top 30 next-generation game titles on Metacritic.com, 21 are on Xbox 360 and five games exclusive to Xbox 360 have received a score above 90. In fact, Forza Motorsport 2 has received an aggregate review score of 90, producing a "Universal Acclaim" rating.

A Cut Too Far, For Rockstar
The requested Manhunt 2 alterations went that bit too far according to Rockstar:

"We are continuing to appeal the British Board of Film Classification's (BBFC) decision to deny the edited version of Manhunt 2 an 18+ certificate and thereby ban its release in the United Kingdom.

"The changes necessary in order to publish the game in Britain are unacceptable to us and represent a setback for video games.

"The BBFC allows adults the freedom to decide for themselves when it comes to horror in movies and we think adults should be similarly allowed to decide for themselves when it comes to horror in video games, such as Manhunt 2."

Poll: How Are You Buying The Orange Box?
With the Wednesday release of The Orange Box fast approaching we're wanting to see how you're acquiring the mega box of joy (you are, right?).

BioShock's your game of the year (so far), taking the crown with nearly three times as many votes as Halo 3, which you lot suspiciously voted for (me thinks the HBO crowd have been here). World in Conflict came in third, and the rest... well they're all losers, and you can see how badly they lost here.

Please, as usual, direct your comments and feedback to the appropriate poll thread.

Brits Smack Down Revised Manhunt 2
Way back in June the British Board of Film Classification told Rockstar that Manhunt 2 was just too violent for the sensibilities of the British public, plus it may send Aunt Fanny's little darlings into uncontrollable murderous rampages. Then, after receiving an Adults Only rating in the States, Rockstar went back to the drawing board to remove close-ups of genitalia being mangled and other such jolly stuff. During this time Rockstar also decided to drop their appeal against the British rating and instead resubmit the game with aforementioned cuts. This appeased the U.S. regulators, but today the BBFC has announced that even with the cuts Manhunt 2 still doesn't have a hope in Hell of being put on shop shelves:

The BBFC has rejected a revised version of the video game Manhunt 2. This follows the rejection of the original version of the game in June. The distributor had set in motion an appeal to the Video Appeals Committee against that decision, and this was suspended while the revised version was considered for classification.

David Cooke, Director of the BBFC said: We recognise that the distributor has made changes to the game, but we do not consider that these go far enough to address our concerns about the original version. The impact of the revisions on the bleakness and callousness of tone, or the essential nature of the gameplay, is clearly insufficient. There has been a reduction in the visual detail in some of the execution kills, but in others they retain their original visceral and casually sadistic nature.

We did make suggestions for further changes to the game, but the distributor has chosen not to make them, and as a result we have rejected the game on both platforms. The decision on whether or not an appeal goes ahead lies with the distributor.

Rockstar has three months to appeal, though at this point I imagine they'll seriously consider cutting their losses and only release the darn thing in North America.

European 60GB Playstation 3 Discontinued
A 40GB Playstation 3 lacking backwards compatibility will soon be the only variety available to European consumers:

The 40GB machine represents all the power and potential of PlayStation 3 at a very compelling price.

Whilst the feature set of the 40GB is a result of extensive feedback and research, all the 'missing' features should some consumers require them are easily upgraded with USB memory card readers, USB hubs, or bigger external USB or internal HDs.

The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility - and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched - as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas.

Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences.

The fully-featured, 60GB PS3 is down to 349.99 from 424.99, and the new 40GB is available from Friday for 299.99. Therefore, if you've got a spare fifty quid and really want a PS3, you should grab a 60GB whilst stocks last. God only knows why you'd want an overpriced George Foreman grill however...

Lots of games have been played - here are some quick and dirty impressions:

Pirates of the Burning Sea - WASD around ship, press space bar every twenty seconds. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. MMOs require some variety, even if you're hitting twenty enemies instead of ten, and they just happen to be pink rather than blue. Burning Sea, in its present state, lacks variety, is incredibly 'arcadey,' and not at all what I expected. January 22nd is a way off, so perhaps Flying Lab can mix it up by then.

Tabula Rasa - Crashes every time I try to progress past the first area. Therefore I shall pull a conclusion out of my ass: It's mediocre and the player base will dwindle rapidly.

Hellgate: London - A most enjoyable first-person shooter - it's not a MMO, as the only time you ever see more than three other people is when you're in a station, and you're only ever there to pick up quests or move to the next area. In its basic, 'free' state (once you've bought the game of course), you can have a gay old time, but I wonder if JoeBloggs walking around with his SuperDuper+10GunofDoom, and you not being able to acquire one because you're not a subscriber will become incredibly infuriating. It'd also be nice if they announced exactly what content subscribers are getting and when they're going to get it (present rumour is every three months).

I'll be playing Hellgate at launch, though won't be subscribing unless some nice person gives me a free premium account *cough*

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance - If you liked the original you'll love FA. If you sucked at the original you'll suck even more at FA. Alterations to Mass Fabricators has made territory control the number one priority of the game, and unless you have saved base templates and the ability to micro like a Korean Starcraft master you'll find your Commander swarmed by tech 1 tanks. Alterations really do need to be made to force players to tech up, and it'd also help if the default game mode wasn't that flamin' Commander killing one.

BioShock - Still not finished it. Although, thanks to the Internet, I know all the key plot points!

Quake Wars - Loved it long ago, love it less now (see below).

Team Fortress 2 - Best multiplayer game ever. Unlike some publications, I don't hand that award out like they they hand out condoms to hookers at the STD clinic. The characters are what do it for me - just the other day, as a Heavy, being healed by a Medic, my guy automatically told the Medic to use me as cover because he was taking damage. It's stuff like that that makes TF2 the most impressive and entertaining multiplayer action game I've ever played. I've thrown over a hundred hours into it so far and imagine I'll be playing it on a regular basis for some years to come. Steam Community & Stats seal the deal.

Neverwinter Nights 2 + Mask of the Betrayer Expansion Pack - Horrid story in the original, terrible display (would it be too difficult to add a freaking symbol over an important character's head so I can find him against the cluttered background?), and rather dull gameplay. I hear Betrayer is better, but have yet to get to it.

Crysis MP Beta - Great fun, performs well, motion blur gives me a headache. I'll likely be playing the multiplayer on a regular basis alongside TF2, though perhaps I'll leave it to one side until the new high-end Nvidia cards come out so I can enjoy the DX10 multiplayer with enhanced physics, day/night cycles and so on and so forth.

3D Mark 06 - OK, so it's not a game, but I've had a jolly good time tweaking my system to make it one of the best for its spec (Q6600, 7950GX2).

SEGA Rally Revo - Which idiot thought up the ridiculous hard-locked keyboard controls? And why does my high-end wheel/pedal setup perform abysmally in a supposedly AAA game from one of the world's largest and oldest game publishers? Thanks for the free copy SEGA, but until you fix that shit it's staying off my system.

Universe at War Earth Assault - Hard to get a grip on the game having just two 1v1 multiplayer maps to experiment with. LIVE for Windows is finally in the application (it ran on the desktop with Halo 2 Vista), though the experience isn't particularly pleasant. Beta patch has been completed and with Microsoft for three weeks, pending certification. This is worrying, especially as Epic will likely have to deal with such nonsense for Gears of War Windows. Microsoft: This is not the Xbox 360. We don't give a crap if the patch isn't perfect. We're PC gamers. We're used to it. Do not get pissy with the certification shit. Make sure it doesn't break your precious LIVE interface, but do not hold up releases. If the game becomes broken its the fault of SEGA. You are not the game's publisher. [/rant over]

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts - Buy it. Now. Thanks.

Frontlines: Fuel of War - Another enjoyable multiplayer action game. May be ahead of its time, PC specs wise. Fully destructible environs (something Crysis DX10 doesn't even do) should help make FFoW stand out in the crowded marketplace, once they're enabled that is.

MINERVA - Excellent, free, single-player campaign for Half-Life 2. Play it!

Watcha been playing of late? How's it stack up?

P.S. Rob's gone to Epic to play Unreal Tournament 3. Envious, moi? Nein!

Top 10 Most Wanted Halo 4 Developers
Since Bungie made it pretty clear that they're sick of making Halo games, where does that leave Microsoft? Who can the publisher hire to finish the fight? Here's our short list:
10) Gearbox
Why? For starters, Gearbox made the insanely popular Halo: Combat Evolved PC port. Besides that, the company is bursting at the seams with talent. With multiple teams, and lots of Halo experience under its belt, Gearbox would be a great fit.

9) Irrational (2K Boston/2K Aus)
Why? to begin with, you mightve heard of a little game called BioShock that sold a few copies. While the studio has little multiplayer experience, I doubt Microsoft is going to want to reinvent the wheel when it comes to Halo 4's online play. I bet 2K would rent them out for a few years on the cheap...

8) Ubisoft Montreal
Why? Bungie is sick of making Halo, and by now, Im sure Ubisoft is tired of making Tom Clancy games. Ubisoft has the manpower, single and multiplayer savvy, not to mention the ability to make Halo 4 a legit sequel in less than 4 years.

7) Monolith
Why? Monolith is a veteran FPS developer, is located in Kirkland, plus is owned by Warner Brothers. You know, the movie studio. Microsoft wants a Halo movie. The game nets half a billion bucks, the movie loses a hundred mill. You do the math.

6) Retro Studios
Why? By now Retro has to be tired of making games for old hardware. I think theyre up to the challenge of trying its hand at a next-gen AAA title. Not to mention, I bet they could use a little break from making Metroid sequels.

5) Pandemic
Why? Bono digs Halo, right?

4) Rare
Why? Well, Microsoft already owns the studio, Rare is due for a hit after Perfect Dark Zero, and is savvy world of the 360. Plus would be able to provide a superlative multiplayer experience.

3) Infinity Ward
Why? By now were digging pretty deep into the fantasy Halo 4 developer list, but since Microsoft has deep pockets, lets run with it. Infinity Ward is an awesome single player developer with exceptional multiplayer pedigree. By the time they get to Call of Duty 10, itll be set in space anyways. Why not just skip to the creamy filling?

2) Valve
Why? Okay, were really dreaming now. Ill let you in on a little secret though. When the Halo guy takes off his helmet... guess who it is? ITS GORDON FREEMAN! Work with me, here!

1) Epic
Why? Obviously, the studio best suited to make Halo 4 would be Epic Games. They have the technology, the experience and CliffyB. Just give Cliffy a bucket of Skittles and watch the miracles happen. ..

Who do you think would make the best Halo 4 developer?

Unreal Tournament PS3 Preview
Thanks to Planet Unreal for the link to this Unreal Tournament 3 preview at Games Radar which takes a gander at the PS3 version of the game.
Having sampled the game first-hand, its clear Unreal 3 is shaping up to be something special. While the franchises absence from our machines may have been a protracted one, the series is looking like its going to be returning to PlayStation better, slicker and more frantic than ever. With its stunning arsenal of weapons, countless vehicles, incredible multiplayer action and compelling single-player campaign, Unreal Tournament 3 has the potential to be one of the most complete FPS packages ever. And not too far off from now, youll be able play it for yourselves.
Team Fortress 2 Patch
Where did my stats go? (cry) Valve released another beta patch for Team Fortress over the weekend:
  • Fixed certain crashes with paged pool memory
  • Added a warning for when paged pool memory is low
  • Fixed some prediction errors with player avoidance
  • Fixed columns and row bunching up in server browser
  • Fixed a rare bug where the wrong launcher.dll was being used to launch the game
  • Fixed teleporter/spawn doorway exploit
TF2 is my pick for multiplayer game of the year (so far).
Epic: "No Money in Wii Engines"
Further endearing himself to Nintendo fans around the world, Epic's Mark Rein who suggests that there's No Money in Wii Engines:
"I don't think there's a lot of money in making engines for the Wii."

"What we're doing is the really high-end, next-generation visuals," he said. "We're pushing these machines real hard. I just think that we have too many things on our plate to go back and put resources into that kind of thing."

They could always re-package the Unreal Engine 1.0 for it. :) Ho, ho, ho...

Big-Ass Witcher Preview (s)

RPG Watch conjured up a rather large preview of The Witcher (part one and two) after getting a preview build of the game. Plenty of new media and impressions included:
You play the predefined character, Geralt of Rivia a professional monster hunter and expert swordsman known as a witcher - a small cult who undergo arduous training along with deadly rituals and mutating potions to give them superhuman strength and reflexes but leaving them not quite human. Their position in society is a reflection of the complex world Sapkowski has shaped persecuted and feared as mutants but their services are often needed, as they travel the lands slaying monsters for pay. Soon after the game opens, the witchers decaying mountain fortress of Kaer Morhen is attacked and the survivors set out in different directions to search for answers.
The Witcher is like Poland's version of Britney Spears. But with a sword (cough).

Having a swanky weekend, I hope? I'll be gone a couple of days next week on a trip to Epic, but Andy and the gang should keep you covered. My goal for today is to stay up all night so I can get my biological clock to East Coast time so I'm not a zombie for the visit. On the bright side, that means more Sunday updates.

We're bringing on another poster here shortly as well (Matt from Planet Call of Duty), so there shouldn't be much downtime in the news department while I'm away. I'd post on the road, but mobile gaming notebooks desktop replacements are good for neither gaming or mobility unless you like lugging an extra bag around. Anyways, it looks like you guys dig the Hellgate, so we'll be bringing you more next weekend. News is usually slow on Sat/Sun, so little nuggets like those help spice things up [as we slack off].
