We have an interview with diademus about his NWN Hall of Fame Hakpak Underdark - spidercave tileset. Topics also include his background, the Hak and his design choices as well as what his inspirations were. The interview is a vibrant one and a reflection of the authors enthusiasum for NWN and Custom Content. Here is an excerpt:
Could you please enlighten us about the Spider Cave Tileset?
It has its history and I could talk you into the ground about it. Ill try to cover the important parts. The spider caves are the first part of my whole Underdark tileset. The name 0.25 is simple to understand, its just 25% of what it will be alike once its completed. As my work started I quickly realised that there is no way around but to split up the whole Underdark tileset into 4 different pieces of work stages. The spider cave part represents just the first instalment of it, just the generic tunnels and spider lairs.
When a player or a group has to go adventure down below, the ambience of the bittersweet darkness has to be real a little bit. The Underdark is like a love/hate relationship manifested in a landscape in my opinion.
We'd like to thank diademus for taking the time to answer our questions and our HoF Interviewer Steve Savicki for conducting the interview.
"Drs. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk discuss their studios' big deal--and reveal Dragon Age and top-secret MMORPG are already playable" to Tor Thorsen, from GameSpot. Overall BioWare's CEOs seem really excited about being bought by EA, and say that this partnership will allow them to do bigger and better things with so many resources available to them now. They also state quite firmly that they are still "independent". To read more hop on over to GameSpot, here is an excerpt:

Shane K. Defreest has posted the NX1 Community Update #11. This week Obsidian answer community questions on Prestige Classes. Some of the questions covered are why the Invisible Blade is limited to 5 levels, the Shifter was not implemented because it was not part of the D&D; 3.5 ruleset, and how Obsidian decided on what PRCs to implement and to what level to allow them. To read this latest update hop on over to here where we keep all the Community updates for your reading pleasure.

Community Update: Prestige Classes We had hoped to get this out prior to the release. But as most of you can guess this week has been a little crazy. However, we did want to answer your questions. So this week Lead Designer and Producer Kevin Saunders gives some insight into Prestige Classes!
Hope everyone is enjoying the expansion! -Shane

Ruined, & thanks obsidian What's the exact issue? It's difficult to tell whether you are talking about the MoTB campaign or just hosting an ILR server in general.
More: So it sounds like you are running a generic server made with MoTB toolset? Or did you just advance the level limit?
I also live in Australia and was not able to download the digital version even tho I got the email advice from Atari about downloading. So I don't know what the other diggers and kiwis did that I couldn't do?
I guess I will just have to wait. Perhaps Atari is so rich is does not need to sell games to the downunder savages!
To answer your question... Atari, Inc. is only allowed to sell the game in North America. Anyone from Canada, The United States of America, Puerto Rico, or Mexico can buy the game from Atari.com/us. Anyone outside of those territories will unfortunately have to wait until their territory releases the game.
Where is the manual located in the Digital Download version? I can't seem to find it in the NWN2 directory but I might just be dumb.
In your (assuming the default installation) C:\Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2\Documentation folder. The manual for Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer can also be found here: ftp://ftp.atari.com/manuals/pc/
If it is not showing up and you are using I.E. be sure to hit F5 to refresh the page since you last time visited it.
Currently that page does not have the manual for Neverwinter Nights 2 but we are working on getting that there soon.
You might also have MotB added to the list of games for registration at Atari, since the install offers a link to register and no option to do so when you get there.
I always worry about software when details like this get missed.
Thanks for the heads up! We have actually made IT aware of this a little bit ago so hopefully it should appear on that list soon.
Congrats on finally getting the digital version up. What was the delay, though? Was it because of the automated patching when the game installs and the problems with the patches Obsidian originally issued? If so, then I can understand the delay. It sounds like everything is working just fine now. I might even be tempted to download the digital version for my laptop.
Yes the delay was actually due to the patching system. We had to code a system in that would force people to run the game once before attempting to patch the game. This is something that due to the nature of it had to be done after everything else was finished and ended up taking longer than expected. If we had not taken this step there would have been a number of problems. The main one being that anyone who ran the autopatcher before running the game at least once would get a No CD error or something similar and would have uninstall and reinstall their game, among other things.
Now however I can safely that everything works just fine and that the autopatcher will patch your game correctly. When a patch comes out for retail it will be the same patch for digital. Just use the autopatcher and you should be just fine.
Mattlab, this is very unfair. Ive been waiting for the digital download and Im doomed for the geolock.
Atari europe will do the same?
Unfortunately there is nothing I can do. Atari, Inc. has to Geolock the game to North America as that is territory where we have rights to sell it. Sorry!

Once you start with the fact that your character went from 1st to 30th level in the equivalent of one year of time, I think it becomes an awful lot easier to accept ultra-powerful elite Thayan gnoll fighters and packs of Red Wizards in the high teens/low twenties.

It appears that a very small portion of the latest run of NWN Diamond edition was manufactured incorrectly. Atari erroneously included 3 identical CD-keys with the package and as such it will not install or play.
Customers affected by this issue will see three identical Cd-keys printed on the inside front cover of their game manual and after installing the game they will be prompted to re-enter their Cd-key whenever the game is run. The Cd-keys will be rejected as either "in-use" or "invalid" as Neverwinter Nights does not allow installation to contain the duplicate CD-keys.
Affected customers are best served by contacting Atari Customer Support at http://www.atarisupport.com (North America Only). These customers can expect a quicker resolution if they are able to provide Atari Support with a scan or digital image of the incorrectly printed Cd-keys in their Neverwinter Nights Diamond game manual.
International customers with internet access can find the correct Atari Support site/hotline in either their game manual or via this page on our site: http://nwn.bioware.com/support/
As always I am here to help and answer questions regarding the above issue.

In this case your best bet will be to ensure the CD-Keys your current install of Neverwinter Nights is using are the same as the ones you used to purchase the module. If you suspect your Installed CD-Key is different from the one used to purchase the game, compare your receipt against your nwncdkey.ini file. -Instructions to view your receipt: Click Here -Instructions to view or change the CD-Key an installation of NWN is using: Click Here
Crashing Which sound card do you have? You should be able to find this out under "device manager" in Windows XP/Vista.
Autentication problems The module may take up to several minutes to complete the authentication process. During this time it is important that you do not click Play Demo as your module is authenticating with the BioWare Master server. After authentication is complete the module will progress as normal to Character Selection.
Note: If your module remains on the Please wait while we authenticate your premium module screen for more than five minutes it may be indicative of a problem with your firewall. Please ensure that you give Neverwinter Nights access to the internet through your personal firewall. If you are having trouble configuring it properly let me know which brand and version it is and I may be able to help you out!
BioWare's Off Topic forum is drowning in posts from concerned BioWare fans about the news that EA are buying BioWare. So far there are 58 pages on five different threads, not to mention the other posts elsewhere on that forum. From what we can tell, a lot of people are very upset, however the BioWare folks appear to be unfazed and keeping their sense of humour. And so with that in mind we thought we'd share with you a tribute to BioWare made by community member Elikal. Now don't forget to keep the Kleenex close by as you watch and listen to this touching fan made tribute to BioWare titled: "Bioware - A Tribute to an era of RGPs".

Tonight we have a Neverwinter Nights 2 Area Prefab in the spotlight created by MokahTGS. Titled "Realms of Ultima Prefabs - Moongates", this prefab uses a travel system based upon the kind used in Ultima Online. The in game map shows the different coloured Moongates, and if the player has the correct colour Moonstone for a gate they are able to bury it and call up the gate. A demo module is included with this submission. A very neat idea well worth a look at! Here's an excerpt:
Here is a simple system for Moongate travel for use in Ultima themed projects as well as anything else, because they are just that nifty. This system has been themed for Ultima with town names as destinations, but could easily be changed to use however you see fit.
This is a fully functional system for using blue moongates in a world. It extends the system created by Driller (Thank you very much for all your help!!) and includes additional scripts, a conversation, and all the items and placeables youll need to set up a system in no time! Cut and paste, drag and drop.
The current version uses 8 moonstones of various colors to spawn a blue moongate that can take the player to 8 different locations. Locations are dependant on which of the 8 moonstones they currently have in their inventory.
This system assumes that you are using JasonNHs moongate VFX package, but you can use whatever effect you want for the moongate.
Future Plans:
The current system only uses the blue moongates, as in Ultima lore red, black and silver gates could only be opened with special items or special people. I intend to create an addition to this system with an Orb of the Moons object which will allow players to open red, white and possibly black gates.
Thanks for your contribution MokahTGS. If you'd like your work in the spotlight, drop me a line.
Gamespot & ActionTrip have posted their reviews of NWN 2: Mask of the Betrayer. The scores are 8.0/10.00 which translates to "Great" & 86 which is "Very good" respectively. Here is an excerpt:
Mask of the Betrayer brings a lot of exciting new things to Neverwinter Nights. First off, there are new races in the form of the elemental genasi and wood elves, as well as new character and prestige classes. If you want to play the original NWN2 with these new races and classes, you can. The setting of spirit-infested Rashemen is a refreshing change of pace from the Sword Coast, which has been the subject of countless D&D; games. Rashemen makes for a much more haunted setting, particularly when you take into account the shadow plane, an alternate mirror dimension that feels as if you're trapped in a nightmare. Mask of the Betrayer introduces some cool new characters and companions, and even more intriguingly, the companions you have access to depend on key decisions you make throughout the game. For instance, if you spare the spirit of a bear god during a pivotal battle, he'll accompany you on your travels and open up quests that you would have otherwise not had access to. These decisions basically fall in good and evil categories, so there's not a lot of moral gray area in the game.
The expansion also does a great job of diversifying the gameplay. In NWN2,there was almost no situation that couldn't be solved with a little combat. On the other hand, Mask of the Betrayer is packed with all sorts of devious puzzles. For instance, a trip to a wizard school will have you trying to figure out an elaborate mirror puzzle, as well as attempting to break a contract with a devil. This is an expansion that will make you think, and that's a good thing.
Mask of the Betrayer ties up a few loose ends from NWN 2. Everything starts after the battle with the King of Shadows (the culmination of the previous game). You awake, alone and stranded deep beneath the surface, in a weird-looking cave. Gazing at the mysterious signs on the nearby pillars and walls, you are greeted by a Red Wizard, who offers to help you reach the surface. With no memory of how you got there, you accept this invitation. There's something else... Stirring deep inside you is a new, unknown hunger, which seems to have affected you drastically. Confronting one of the spirits in the cave, you discover a whole new power dwelling inside you. Without any idea of how to control this power, you are forced to press on, with the Red Wizard by your side. Pressing on won't be an easy task if you don't know your way around NWN 2. The first obvious step towards better gameplay was improving the game's camera.
The developers incorporated the over-the-shoulder view (Character Mode) and the RTS-like top down perspective (Strategy Mode). Now, in my experience, neither of these proved good enough for this type of game. Quite simply, the classic camera from the original NWN is best-suited for playing the game and you'd be well-advised to use it in this add-on. Once again, the camera's default setting isn't exactly the best solution. In fact, it may ward off many gamers right from the start, plus they might have to spend extra time adjusting the camera angle, mouse scroll speed, etc. Aforementioned issues aside, we look towards the positive aspects of this expansion pack. For one thing, experienced RPG gamers and D&D; hardcore gamers will surely find it a challenge all the way. You should also know that some of the key new gameplay features won't kick in until you've explored a decent portion of the area and completed several quests. When your character reaches "Epic" status, you'll be able to exercise new feats and spells that vary according to the class (or Prestige Class) you've chosen. Also, you are now able to try out new D&D; classes like the Red Wizard of Thay, Invisible Blade and Spirit Shaman, each with their own unique abilities.

Yahoo Finance report " EA To Acquire BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios"! Here is an excerpt:
EA, the world's No.1 video game publisher, is known for blockbusters such as "The Sims" and "Madden NFL," but it has at times had less than 10 percent of the lucrative market for role-playing, action and adventure games.
"These guys are powerhouses there, and this acquisition puts us in a strong competitive position now," Frank Gibeau, president of EA Games said in an interview.
