Dario Argento Goes into Dead Space
Asia Argento's dad, Dario Argento, will be doing some voice-over work for the Italian version of Dead Space, 1UP has learned:

Well-loved Italian horror director Dario Argento is lending his vocal skills to the Italian version of EA's Dead Space, breathing life into the character of Doctor Kyne. Argento's work has heavily influenced modern horror and slasher movies. When offered the chance to step out from behind the camera to lend his voice to the survival horror game, Argento responded with excitement. In his own words:

"Dead Space truly captures the essence of fear in an entertainment medium. Not only is it the most terrifying game I've ever played, but it's also one that all fans of horror will appreciate."

Fallout 3: 6 Hours in
IGN shared their impressions of Fallout 3 after spending some 6-hours with the game.
Today we go farther into the game than anybody outside of Bethesda has to date. With more time I was able to go beyond Megaton and its surroundings, explore the depths of the dilapidated subway tunnels, and make it all of the way to the heart of Washington DC and travel to Rivet City, a massive aircraft carrier run aground and turned into a safe haven for a small band of humans eking out an existence.
Obviously, there are some spoilers, so read on at your own risk.

Resident Evil 5 Fact Sheet
Capcom has released a fact sheet for Resident Evil 5, giving a bit of a lowdown on the game, which is scheduled to ship out worldwide on March 13th, 2009:

The biohazard threat has not ended: Just when it seemed that the menace of Resident Evil had been destroyed, along comes a new terror to send shivers down player’s spines. Chris Redfield, returning Resident Evil hero, has followed the path of the evil literally around the globe. After joining a new organization, Chris heads to Africa where the latest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people and animals of the city into mindless, maddened creatures. He is joined by a new partner, Sheva Alomar, who lends her strength, intelligence and sharp-shooting skills to the mission. In order to survive, Chris and Sheva must work together to take on the challenges of discovering the truth behind this evil plot. Utilizing a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, players will be able to assume control of either Chris or Sheva and experience Resident Evil in new ways. In Resident Evil 5, Capcom will have players fearing the daylight as much as they have feared shadow in previous games.

CD Projekt Talks DRM
ArsTechnica has interviewed CD Projekt CEO Michal Kicinski and Good Old Games Managing Director Adam Oldakowski, two of the big brains behind Good Old Games. In the interview, the pair talk about the latest four-letter word in the gaming industry, DRM:

Ars: Do you think the issue of DRM is taking the focus away from what PC gaming is doing right? No one is talking about the gameplay of Spore, for example.

MK: It's true. DRM is a very hot topic these days. To me it means that the solutions proposed by the companies are very controversial. Of course, it would be better if they wouldn't be so controversial, and then we could simply talk about what we like the most—naturally, these are the games themselves. I believe that the subject of PC games is still worth looking at, and there are lots of things we can do in the future to retain its appeal. Although the PC platform doesn't have such strong PR and marketing support, its open nature offers huge opportunities for creative thinking, not only concerning games themselves, but also considering distribution or developing new genres like browser games. In my opinion, the rumors about the death of the PC as a gaming platform are greatly exaggerated.

Activision: Music Labels Should be Paying Us
- 22 Comments
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick thinks that instead of asking for more money to license music for games, music labels should be paying the game publishers:

"There's a misunderstanding of the value we bring to the catalog," Kotick says, discussing the issue with the Wall Street Journal.

"When you look at the impact it can have on an Aerosmith, Van Halen or Metallica, it's really significant, so much so that you sort of question whether or not, in the case of those kinds of products, you should be paying any money at all and whether it should be the reverse."

Kotick has responded to Bronfman's comments in the past, describing them as "one-sided and not "respectful of how much we’ve done to bring new audiences into the market."

To support his position, he has also noted that Activision's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith generated more revenue for the band than any individual Aerosmith album.

Silent Hill: Homecoming Denied Classification in Australia
- 8 Comments
Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification claim Silent Hill: Homecoming contains "excessive violence" and have refused to classify the game, effectively banning it from store shelves:

Silent Hill: Homecoming won't see a commercial release in Australia. Citing "excessive violence," the Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to classify Konami's upcoming survival horror title -- no rating means no release in the region.

With the decision, Homecoming becomes the fourth title that the OFLC has refused to classify just this year. It releases in North America on September 30, but distributor Atari would have shipped the game in Australia on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in November.

No More Consoles From Sony and Microsoft?
Taking part in a recent debate, Alex St. John of Wild Tangent predicts the end of consoles:

St. John claims that Sony has announced it will not make a new console for 10 years. He also says that when asking representatives at Sony and Microsoft who is the head of the next console development, they will not name a name.

The major reason neither Sony nor Microsoft will make another console, according to St. John, is because the business does not make financial sense. It's not news to anyone in the game industry that current generation hardware is sold at a loss to the company.

And at Microsoft, that business model is unlikely to float any longer now that Bill Gates has retired and Steve Ballmer -- whom St. John calls "a money guy" -- is leading the company. Consoles just aren't profitable, he says, and the motive to repeat those failures just isn't there.

On the other hand, Townsend and Stevenson argue that the install base is already there. With millions of Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s already hooked up in people's homes, it already is an immovable element of the modern living room. Game consoles will drive the high-definition entertainment experience, says Stevenson.

It's friday already? Dizaaaaaaaamn! I've pretty much lost track of time and space from playing Warhammer non-stop for the past week. I was in my first keep siege last night and I have to say, that was the only part of the game that has even vaguely reminded me of Dark Age of Camelot so far. I wasn't able to get very good line-of-sight to nuke people on the walls, but other than that, it was good clean fun.

Today's question:

What games topped your most played list last week?

Warhammer Online Credit Dispute Resolved
About a month ago, Mythic Entertainment and Mark Jacobs created a stir by leaving some names out of the credits for Warhammer Online. Now comes news that Mythic is creating an online database in an effort to give credit where credit is due:

On the heels of a crediting controversy, Mythic Entertainment is creating an online database that will list the names of all staff members who contribute to its projects, regardless of their present status with the studio.

Mythic had garnered criticism from the International Game Developers Association for its decision to credit only those Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning staffers who were with the studio at the time of the game's launch. While Mythic will still reserve in-game and manual credits for the launch team, it will list all contributors in the database it's currently developing, and will also make "best efforts" to provide credit information on its previous titles.

Max Payne Movie Rated PG-13, Extended DVD Cut Announced
    - 18 Comments
With a few minor tweaks and a lot of lobbying, Max Payne director John Moore has got a PG-13 certification for his movie, down from the original box office-harming R originally given by the MPAA:

I must say, and that's what's a little bewildering about this, I didn't have to change much. We trimmed some frames more for the sake of trimming frames than anything, but we got the rating without any major changes at all. I'm a little surprised that we changed their minds, effectively, but I'm happy about it. It proves that if you stick to your guns and you have the creative, and dare I say moral sense, that you're in the right, that you can get the right thing done.

There'll also be an extended 'Gamer's Cut' when the DVD release comes rolling round:

There's what I call the Gamer Dedicated Cut of the movie. It's a little slower and a little more atmospheric. There are some rougher edges on it, but it's not going to be a bloodfest. I want this to be the Max Payne that I set out to shoot. It's not that I wanted to release one version in the theaters and make a cheap buck by following up with a blood-drenched DVD version. The movie you see in the theaters will be an intense experience and the movie you see on DVD will be as intense an experience with some extra sensibilities for people who really adore the game.

    Duke Nukem Movie Interview
With the Duke Nukem movie rights now in the hands of the people making Max Payne: The Movie, GameCyte asked Scott Miller for an update on the project:

When Duke 3D was released, it was thin on story and characters, no doubt. Max Payne and Prey, though, had better stories and better characters. This is both a function of our growing industry, as well as our growing desire to give more compelling context to all of the gameplay and action. So, by building a storyverse for Duke Nukem, we’re bringing that franchise into modern times. A lot of this is going to be seen in Duke Nukem Forever, because we have several key characters besides Duke, including Bombshell and General Graves. And Duke’s personality and history will be more prominent in the game.

The bottom line is that Duke Nukem was created before we had the storyverse idea nailed down. Max Payne was our first game that was purposely built as a storyverse — in large part as a result of the lessons we learned from making Duke Nukem 3D. So, while Duke comes across as a little shallow now, that’s only because we haven’t released a modern day product that fleshes things out like in recent games.

Also covered: Marky Mark returning for Max Payne: The Movie 2; Max Payne 3; Duke Nukem Forever; a whole lot more.

    Damnation Screenshots & Trailer
Producer Richard Gilbert details the game’s vertical shooting action:

“We really wanted to open up the worlds and give the player freedom of choice,” says Richard Gilbert, Producer. “In Damnation, you’re presented with huge vistas – you’ll see your objective miles away and you have to intuitively find your path from where you are to that objective. In the same way that the navigation is intuitive, the control of the character is also intuitive. If you wanna grab a ledge, you just press jump and you grab a ledge. It’s not this disconnected feeling.”

Damnation’s vast streaming levels cover miles of horizontal distance, thousands of vertical feet and are flooded with hostile troops. Players will find and fight their own path through each environment, taking advantage of Rourke’s agility, high-octane vehicles like wall-riding motorbikes and deploying an array of powerful weaponry, including steam-powered ’Auto Revolvers’, ‘Dark Seraph Rifles’ and the deadly ‘Rail Road Spike Gun’. Gamers can also initiate Spirit Vision, a gift that allows Rourke to identify enemies hidden throughout the level and decide their own angle of attack.

In addition to the extensive single-player campaign, Damnation also delivers drop-in-drop-out co-operative play and innovative multiplayer modes. Taking advantage of the scale and height of Damnation’s levels, new game types and traditional deathmatch and capture the flag modes are given a vertical twist, where players have to balance firepower and agility and can kill or be killed from any direction.

All available resources were focussed on the creation of the game, and now they're working on the SDK:

We wanted to make sure that people received the best game play experience in both single and multiplayer, so as such we decided to focus all of our energy and attention in that direction originally.

For now we hope you enjoy both the single player and multiplayer experiences provided until the Sandbox editor and ModSDK are released.

It is possible to play many of the custom levels that have been created for Crysis Multiplayer in Crysis Wars, so we encourage everyone to make use of the automatic map downloader and get hold of some of the great creations from the community and play them on the game servers.

Dr. Kawashima's Brain Age Recommended For School Children
    - 1 Comment
A British study has proven that Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day (Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training in Europe) makes school kids clevererer:

The pupils were initially given a maths test before using Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training from on the Nintendo DS for 20 minutes at the start of each day for nine weeks or continuing their class as normal. The game featured challenges including reading tests, problem-solving exercises and memory puzzles designed to exercise the brain while the control group continued their lessons in a more traditional manner.

When they were tested again at the end of the nine weeks the results found all groups involved had improved their scores but those using the game improved by a further 50% from 78 to 83 out of 100. The time taken to complete the tests also dropped by five minutes from 18.5 minutes to 13.5 minutes with the improvement of the games group more than twice as much as the control classes.

Less able children were also more likely to improve than the highest attainers and almost all pupils had an increased perception of their own ability. The study also found that it made no difference if the children had the game at home, pointing to the relevance of using it within an educational context, and there was no difference in ability between girls or boys.

There was also a notable improvement in absence and lateness in some classes involved with the project, pupil’s interpersonal relationships also improved and they were more inclined to take responsibility for management and ownership of the tasks involved such as distribution and collection of the consoles. There was also a slight, but statistically significant, improvement in attitude towards school by those in the games group.
