RF Online Offline
Codemasters reports that European and North American servers for their free-to-play MMO RF Online will be taken offline in early November:

It is with much sadness that today we announce our intention to close the European and North American RF Online game servers operated by Codemasters.

Our licence for RF Online is due to expire shortly and unfortunately, despite several weeks of negotiations with CCR, the Korean developers of the title, we have not been able to reach an agreement to renew the contract.

This means that Codemasters will no longer have the right to operate the service in the Western territories it currently provides service in and therefore we are obliged to shut down all associated game services before the licence expires.

The last full day of service will be 9th November, 2008. All RF Online world servers will shut down on the morning of Monday 10th November, UK time.

Why Gears of War 2 Isn't Coming To PC: The Mark Rein Cut
- 18 Comments
Contrary to CliffyB's inflammatory comments, Epic boss Mark Rein states that Gears of War 2 won't be making an appearance on PC not because of piracy, but because they're focussing all resources on making the initial Xbox 360 launch version the bestest game ever.

Ripten asked Mark to respond to the statements made by his designer, stating “Your lead designer has been quoted saying that piracy is the main concern”, to which he responded:

"The reason we decided not to develop Gears 2 for PC was so that we could focus our resources on making Gears 2 the best possible Xbox 360 game it could be rather than splitting them across multiple platforms like we did with the first one. I think Gears 2 will be a better game for it and that this was the right decision."

Drivers Who Game May Get Cheaper Car Insurance
- 3 Comments
Drivers aged 50 to 75 may be awarded with lower car insurance premiums if they volunteer to play games commissioned by the insurer:

Under a new pilot program called InSight, Allstate will offer specialized computer games to 100,000 customers in Pennsylvania aged 50 to 75. The games' developer, San Francisco-based Posit Science, will track the total number of hours these drivers play.

Then the group's accident rates will be compared to a control group of people who do not play the games.

The games are not all specific to driving. They're designed to reverse age-related cognitive decline and improve visual alertness.

For example, a game called "Jewel Diver" has players keep track of underwater jewels that pop up on the screen for a moment before they are hidden under fish swimming around. When the fish stop moving, players click on the fish hiding the jewel. It's like Three Card Monte but without the cheating. Over time, the game gets more complicated as more fish appear on the screen.

Allstate recommends that drivers complete at least 10 hours of training. It's being given as a free option to the 100,000 Pennsylvania drivers, and Allstate plans to decide next year whether to roll it out in other states.

Take-Two to Stay Single
After spurning all those tempting offers of financial security, publisher decides to go it alone:

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, until recently an acquisition target of bigger rival Electronic Arts Inc, plans to remain an independent company, the makers of the popular "Grand Theft Auto" series said on Thursday.

Take-Two said the decision following detailed discussions with "various interested parties" over the last five months.

"Take-Two's Board of Directors has determined that it is in the best interests of stockholders to conclude its review of strategic alternatives and to continue operating and building Take-Two as an independent company," the company said.

Here are the first official photos of the new fangled Nintendo DSi handheld, plus a couple of comparisons with the DS Lite, and a 2008-2009 DSi software line-up trailer:

Nintendo DSi Battery Life Significantly Shorter
- 6 Comments
The new DSi handheld is 4mm wider, 1mm longer, 2.6mm thinner, and 4 grams lighter than the DS Lite. It also uses significantly more juice per second than the "old" model.

According to official specifications released by Nintendo, the DS Lite could do 15-19 hours of play at a minimum level of LCD brightness, and 5-8 at full whack. The DSi, meanwhile, can only manage a paltry 9-14 hours of play at minimum, or 3-4 at maximum. So much for progress.

Nintendo Announces DSi Handheld
Nintendo's latest handheld hardware revision has been announced. Known as DSi, the updated spec trims 12% of the fat off of the device, increases the screen size to 3.25 inches, removes the GameBoy slot (good luck playing Guitar Hero: On Tour), adds digital music playback, and includes two 0.3 megapixel cameras (one faces out, the other in) that'll allow online interaction and game customisation.

With the removal of the GameBoy slot, Nintendo has added an SD card adapter, which will allow games and other applications to be downloaded from the Internet through, and then loaded directly from the card. The first piece of software to be released in this way through the DSi Store will be a web browser. Coming soon after is Flip Book Notepad. Similar in style to Pictochat, it will be able to utilise images taken by the camera. Specifically, it will assist in the creation of a digital flip book, saving many trees in the process. Further software will be priced in Points, though each buyer of the DSi will be given one thousand, on the house.

The DSi will hit Japanese shops November 1st, priced at 18,900 Yen ($178). A Spring 2009 European launch has also been confirmed.

Top 9 Fixes in Today's WAR Update
MJ popped on the boards to share his top 9 changes & fixes in today's Warhammer Online v1.01 update:
    1) Players no longer need to scroll down through the EUALA when logging into the game. The window now defaults to the bottom, and players need only check the Agreement box and click accept. And much rejoicing was heard throughout the streets. It's still there and you still have to accept it but we are no longer going to require the scrolling bit for now.

    2) The war against the gold sellers continues! We have made improvements to the Appeal system to allow players to report spam messages from gold sellers more quickly. This is only another way we are trying to fight these guys and make it as easy on you folks as possible. We're not there yet but we'll get there.

    3) TAB-targeting should now more consistently select the nearest enemy in the player's field of view. I know, some of you have heard this before but this version is better than the last version.

    4) The /ignore command will now work more consistently. While /ignore worked well most of the time and for most people it was a bit quirky. Hopefully it isn't quirky anymore.

    5) We have made several improvements to the chat window, and it should now be more intuitive to use and set up.

    6) Player pets have learned to behave themselves. Yes, they have been sent back to obedience school more than once but hey, these things have a mind of their own at times. Bad Simba, bad lion.

    7) The delay between sending multiple mails has been reduced from 20 seconds to 5 seconds. This is another one of those "first step" things.

    8) A feature has been added to User Settings which allows players to auto loot corpses by default.

    9) Corrected an issue that was preventing players from adding new friends to their friend list even while the number of existing friends was below the list's size limit. All together now, let's say bug!

Check out the complete list 'o changes here.

Fable II Limited Edition Gets Nerfed
Fable II's fancy $80 Limited Edition has had its list of goodies cut significantly following "major supply chain issues."

We have just been informed by Microsoft this afternoon that there is a significant supply chain issue regarding the contents of the Fable II Limited Edition. This affects the entire market.

They have advised us that neither the figurine, nor the metallic box, nor the fate cards are going to be available. Which is incredibly frustrating!

However the Limited Edition WILL still come with a bonus disk with all Lionhead developer diaries, concept art viewer, music from soundtrack and new behind the scenes making of video footage, as well as bonus in-game content.

We have lowered the price of the limited edition to £39.99 to reflect the altered contents. I do hope this goes some way to alleviating your disappointment.

    U.S. customers will receive a $10 discount.

"Our new game has a lot of great enhancements that were made possible by direct fan interaction and we are extremely excited to get our game into their hands and get their feedback."

The madcap Penny Arcade experience continues in Episode Two where gamers return to the deranged 1920s universe of New Arcadia and rejoin Gabe and Tycho of the Startling Developments Detective Agency to visit crazy new areas, combat bigger and badder enemies, solve even more wacky puzzles and get ever closer to unraveling the mystery in the sinister heart of New Arcadia.

    Left 4 Dead Pre-Orders 40% Higher Than Orange Box's
    - 14 Comments
Left 4 Dead is on track to be one of Valve's most popular games ever:

What are your sales goals for this game. Do the benefits of Steam make it easier to meet profit expectations?

First part of the question: Sales goals are hard to truly define until you get close to launch, especially with a new game property. However, we're getting close now and it looks like Left 4 Dead may do OK. Pre-orders for L4D are currently exceeding Orange Box pre-orders by well over 40%, this driven largely by the 10% off promotion being offered now for both versions. And one could assume this trend over Orange will continue as the pre-launch demo hits and the largest consumer advertising campaign for any Valve game begins on buses, buildings, billboards, TV, magazines, and web sites in the next couple weeks.

Second part of the question: Whether it's opening an additional sales channel or providing solutions for auto-updating and copy protection products sold at retail, Steam improves all aspects of our business.

Also included in the interview: "The demo is planned to hit prior to launch, roughly a couple weeks prior. It will be available for both the PC and Xbox 360."

    Otherland Screenshots & Announcement
Unreal Engine 3 powers Otherland, a Singaporean-developed MMO due for release in 2010:

Game fans can expect a completely new MMOG experience with Otherland. Based on the Unreal Engine 3, Otherland will set new technical standards for the MMOG genre. ‘Unreal Engine 3 is the basis for our client side game and graphics engine. To push it over the top our developers have also made countless additions to ensure outstanding graphics quality over huge environments. At the same time our artists and engineers are exploring the boundaries of Unreal Engine 3 to create fresh new visual styles for the game. At Real U we are developing completely new architecture that allows us to build a groundbreaking MMO game with Unreal Engine 3 at its core,’ says Andrew Carter, CEO RealU

MMO fans can also expect a fascinating gameplay experience. Based on the globally successful novels, the Otherland gameplay is distinguished by a unique narrative structure. Rather than retelling the story, players will experience their own individual stories within the Otherland universe and will encounter many of the familiar characters from the books. The game world will change dynamically around them during the course of the game.

Starting from the player lobby Lambda Mall, an Entertainment, Meeting and Communication centre, players will teleport into a wide variety of game worlds. As in the books, virtual reality is a central topic of the game. Nothing is what it appears to be at first glance in this futuristic vision from the pen of Tad Williams, who played an important role in the development of the game.

‘Tad Williams visited us during the conception phase and was very actively involved in the realisation of this project from the beginning,’ comments Andrew Carter. ‘Because this is a MMOG, a linear storyline would not be feasible. Therefore, we had to find an alternative way of telling a story. I think we have found a terrific combination of innovative narration and faithfulness to the books,’ Carter continues.

[H] wrangled up another one of its handy dandy gameplay performance & IQ reports, this time for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, GSC GameWorld's recently released stand-alone prequel pack.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky is exactly what it has been advertised to be: a prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl with an updated graphics engine that, while still scaling well with older hardware, allows us to push the performance envelope. It is the first game to come across our test bench with a volumetric smoke effect, and one of the first games we've seen with weather appropriate surface shaders. The Radeon HD 4870 X2 is the only single card configuration that would allow us to leverage these DX10 features. Clear Sky contains the same overall gameplay style as Shadows of Chernobyl, but with some useful additions. If you loved the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R., you will probably love Clear Sky.

    Fallout 3 Screenshots & Interview
Uh-oh, someone dared to ask the DRM question:

What kind of copy protection will be included on the PC version of Fallout 3?

Pretty similar to what we did for Oblivion, which was--we basically don't do any--we do the mildest form possible. I actually don't know if I even want to get into what it is that we exactly do, but we try to be really noninvasive when it comes to that stuff. [ed- Oblivion employed a simple DVD check.]

And it is a pain in the ass--it is a pain in the ass that we have to do it at all in the first place. But when you spend tens of millions of dollars, we don't think it's right to just put something out there and let everybody do whatever they want and pass it around.

And to have to support all of that--which is often the unspoken thing that nobody really wants to point to. You can argue all day whether or not somebody would have bought a copy of a game they pirated, but you can't argue, and you will never win the argument that I'm not having to provide tech support for those folks. Because I know for a fact that we are. We catch those folks all the time, where we're providing support for somebody who turns out didn't actually pay for the game and just downloaded a copy.

GameStop Buys France's Largest Game Retailer
    - 11 Comments
GameStop accquires Micromania for a cool $704 million US:

U.S.-based retailer GameStop has acquired French chain Micromania - the biggest specialty games retailer in the country.

Founded in 1993, Micromania currently operates 332 stores in France and enjoys annual revenues in excess of €500 million ($704m). GameStop currently has no stores in the country, although it is represented in most of the rest of mainland Europe.

The acquisition, from private equity fund L Capital, is valued at approximately $700 million in cash, including the assumption of all debts. GameStop will purchase almost all outstanding shares of the company, funding the transaction via its own cash reserves, revolving credit facility and a $150 million committed term loan from Bank of America.

id On Rage Digital Distribution, Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein
    - 1 Comment
id's Tim Willits tells 1UP about their desire to bring the majority of franchise development in-house, Rage's story, and digital distribution of a game that may span two or three dual-layer DVDs:

At last year's QuakeCon, you announced that id titles would be available on Steam. Will Rage appear on Steam?

We haven't quite worked through our electronic-distribution. John Carmack [id co-founder] made a comment about the media size, which unfortunately wasn't exactly correct because we haven't crossed that bridge yet. He said it was going to be too large to download, and I was thinking to myself, "You know, uhhhhh, people can do lots of things." So I want to correct that and say that....

    Rage won't break the Internet.

Rage won't break the Internet. Our relationship with Valve and our stuff on Steam has been very successful for us. A lot of the older games that we had to fix to work on newer operating systems allowed us to make them current. I had a Steam account on my machine at work, and if I wanted to load up old Wolfenstein or Doom at work, I [would] load it up on Steam because of DOSBox and all that stuff. And it's actually pretty awesome. We've been very successful with that.

But EA has their own download service.

Yes, I wanted to say that. No, we have not written off digital distribution for Rage. We haven't figured out what we want to do yet. But I do want to fix the fact that John said [digital distribution is] not going to happen. What I'm saying is that's not true. [Laughs]

The Ten Most Annoying DRM Methods
Edge runs down their list of ten annoying anti-piracy methods - coming in at number seven, Codemasters' Fade:

Such ingenious protection measures exist in abundance on the PC as well, and in this environment it’s much easier for a paying player to nevertheless feel the DRM’s sting. And yet, you had to applaud the effort. Just one great example of such a protection measure is Fade. Developed by Codemasters co-founder Richard Darling, it’s intended to be invisible to the pirate playing the game—until they become addicted, at which point gameplay begins to degrade. In Operation Flashpoint, for example, weapons lost their accuracy as enemies became more aggressive and injuries became more frequent. Similar systems have been in place in many games ever since, leaving confused copiers to wonder why their vehicles handle so badly or why the last snooker ball floated off the table.
Blizzard Awarded $6 Million In Glider Bot Battle
    - 24 Comments
Developing and distributing the MMOGlider World of Warcraft bot software has landed creator Michael Donnelly with a $6 million fine:

In July US District Court Judge David Campbell ruled that the MMOGlider, as the software is now known, broke the terms of the license that players agree to when they play World of Warcraft (WoW).

The Glider software is the creation of MDY founder Michael Donnelly who is thought to have sold more than 100,000 copies of the $25 (£14) program. It proved popular with many WoW players as it helped them automate the many repetitive tasks, such as killing monsters and scavenging loot, required to turn low level characters into more powerful ones.

Although sizeable the damages award could have been bigger, say experts, if MDY had not won some of its arguments about damages in court. It was also helped by an admission in court that it would be reasonable to pay some form of damages.

The damages award could be delayed if Blizzard appeals against the judgement which threw out its claim to double or triple the cash settlement.

Wanna check out the latest Alan Wake trailer? Plan on seeing the Max Payne movie? Do you live in Finland? Then today's your lucky day!
While Microsoft Games Studios and Remedy have remained completely silent about Alan Wake, Finnish videogames magazine Pelaaja is reporting that after two years of silence Remedy will finally release a brand new Alan Wake trailer. However, you’ll have to be in Remedy’s homeland - Finland - to be the first to see it. Originally announced for both the PC and Xbox 360, the new trailer will be shown in front of the new Max Payne movie in Finland. Rather fitting since Max Payne is also a Remedy creation.

The trailer will be shown during a special screening of the movie on October 15th, and then during the opening weekend of the movie, which premieres on October 17th.

That new scenario queuing system in WAR is great. I barely had time to take bathroom breaks between rounds (ding 27) after it went live. My only complaint now is that the scenarios don't rotate. I dig Tor Amroc as much as the next guy but it would be fun to play some of the others too (sans Black Fire Basin which turns into the lamest CTF campfests ever). A 'queue all' button or whatever would help as well.

What are your favorite multiplayer game modes?
