Deus Ex 3 is an RPG, According to Eidos
Eidos Montréal's community manager for Deus Ex 3 fired off a few clarifications about the C&VG; story:
Deus Ex 3 is indeed an RPG. It's a hybrid action/RPG just like the first game. There is a skill system where you upgrade your character (Adam) based off experience points you earn and you can do the same thing with weapons. It's a game with a very detailed plot with numerous characters you interact with. The gameplay takes the form of a consequence-driven multi-path, multi-solution approach in a non-linear space.

For stealth, that is another major pillar of gameplay and we do have it. The difference is that it's now cover-based rather than "shadow/light-based" as in the past games.

Hopefully that makes Andy and the rest of you a litte less sad!
Deus Ex 3: First Details Make Me Sad
No role-playing, no stealth, kill.switch Gears of War cover system, Halo health regeneration:

You're cast as average joe Adam Jensen, who works as a private security officer at a technology lab specialising in biomechanical augmentations, a forerunner to the sort of nanotechnology shown in the original Deus Ex. One day the path of his life is unexpectedly altered as a team of black ops commandos break into his company's HQ, and using a security plan from Jensen's own hand, a mass slaughter ensues and the conspiracy begins.

It sounds like Eidos Montreal isn't leaving anything to chance; a "powerful, layered" plot is promised for the third game - which has been confirmed as a prequel set in 2027- and the dev has even drafted in the consultative talents of original writer Sheldon Pacotti, while also gaining the blessing of both Harvey Smith and Warren Spector on the project.

Eidos Montreal says it's more than aware of fan reaction to controversial second game, Invisible War, and promises mistakes, such as limiting ammo types to just one, won't be repeated.

This said, they are doing their utmost to please newcomers as well as existing fans. Perhaps controversially this time around combat won't be influenced by stats, but will rely purely on your personal marksmanship skills. Instead stats will influence "a vast array of fully upgradeable and customisable weapons", and you'll be able to tailor your arsenal to your play style with mag upgrades, scopes and other add-ons.

What's more, stealth will now rely on a cover system rather than shadows, and damage will be dealt with by a very Call of Duty-style auto-heal. There's probably going to be some debate over those two.

Augmentations have been bumped up and sound fantastic. 20 have been promised for the final game, ranging from 'bungee jump' tentacles that shoot from your back and anchor to a wall when you jump off a building, and the ability to punch through walls to grab enemies in neighbouring rooms.

Thanks to the faster scenario queues i'm almost level 30 (61% into 29) in WAR. I plan on getting part two of our review up this weekend. I'm already getting static about how much I've been playing lately, but games like this don't play themselves, do they? It's becoming harder to convice people that this is actual work! ;)

Today's question:

What games will you be playing this weekend?

PC Gaming Alliance Responds to Peter Molyneux
- 43 Comments
Lionhead's Peter Molyneux created a mini-controversy when he said that PC gaming was "in tatters." PC Play took it upon themselves to contact Randy Stude, President of the PC Gaming Alliance, for his reaction to Molyneux's comments:

"We respect Peter Molyneux as one of the legends in the industry, but we think he is way off-base with his assessment of the PC gaming industry.

In fact, the PC Gaming Alliance just released the findings of our Horizons research report in August and it shows that the industry is stronger than ever. An industry with 10.7 billion in revenue during 2007 is hardly in tatters.

Beyond the financial aspect of this, the PC is still the world's leading platform for gaming. There are plenty of AAA titles like Conan, Warhammer Online and Spore, as well as smaller games that appeal to people beyond the console audience. And even though there are many AAA titles in the pipeline for PC, the success of an industry can't be measured in AAA titles alone."

Two Ways to Improve Wargames
Resident strategy nerd Steve Butts shared two of his biggest problems infecting war games over at PC.IGN this evening. One big issue he has is with the graphics and presentation. The other is that they just don't attract new players into the genre.
I'm not at all suggesting that we take The Operational Art of War and make it into Company of Heroes. I think there's room for both approaches to succeed and there are plenty of gamers who would feel left out in the cold if wargame publishers like Matrix and Shrapnel jumped on the RTS bandwagon. My hope is that the makers of more straight ahead wargames can look beyond the narrow definition of their genre to embrace ideas and concepts popularized in other games. We've seen a few titles take some risks in this direction and it frequently, although not always, attracts hardcore fans, wargame novices and good review scores.
PC Gamer's Bill of Rights
PC Gamer's lovely and talented EIC, Kristen Salvatore, kicked up an op/ed called Who fights a Bill of Rights? In it, she responds to Stockdock's recent 'legislation'.
I am 100 percent committed to the belief that, as consumers spending hard-earned money on a product, PC gamers deserve to feel confident in their purchase. I should be able to return a game that doesn’t work on my hardware. I should be able to expect that listed minimum system requirements are true and accurate. I should be able to bring some sort of action if a game installs any sort of mal-ware on my machine.

But the Gamer's Bill of Rights is riddled with ambiguities, which is why I and others are eyeing it with some suspicion. What constitutes a game's "finished state" and who determines it? What makes for a "meaningful update"? And is it really my "right" to play a game without the disc in the drive - even if it increases the possibility that the game can be pirated?

Being able to return games would be nice. I kind of remember those days!

Destruction Sacks First Capital City in WAR
- 28 Comments
Performing the impossible, some 40 Destruction players (the good guys) sacked Altdorf, the capital of the Order faction (bad guys) in an early morning assault on the European server, Karak Eight Peaks.
The entire process, beginning with the capture of the contested zones, began in the early evening and was over by the small hours of the morning. This despite the fact that Mythic boss Mark Jacobs told Eurogamer in a recent interview that completing a city siege in one night would be impossible:

"We've laid everything out in a manner that your side has to accomplish a lot, so it's going to take time. We've seen the other games out there where people can do things late at night while nobody else is on, but it doesn't work that way in WAR. It's impossible," he said.

"It should be weeks unless we really messed up."

MJ's official reaction to the raid was "OMFG!"
It's Not a MadWorld for Japan, Germany or Austraila After All
- 0 Comments
MadWorld, perhaps the coolest Wii game evar, may not be released in Japan (not to mention Germany & Australia) due to its ultra-violent content according to the MTV Multiplayer Blog.
Sega is working closely with the Entertainment Software Ratings Board to ensure the game receives just an M rating, they told me. The ESRB receives new builds on a regular basis and Sega notes their feedback. Sega wants them to feel “part of the process? of developing “MadWorld? and isn’t looking to surprise them.

And even though Japan-based Platinum Games is developing “MadWorld,? Sega isn’t sure “MadWorld? will show up in its native territory. Sega will not be showing the game at next week’s Tokyo Game Show, and any Japanese release will be evaluated after “MadWorld? is released here in March 2009.

This also applies to other violence-sensitive countries, specifically Australia and Germany. Those markets could see “Mad \World,? but it’s not part of Sega’s strategy right now. If “MadWorld? is a success, it might happen, but the concern right now is making it a western hit and ensuring its violence remains gory — but within an M rating.

Fable II Limited Edition Gimped Again?
GAME UK sent an email to customers today about further cuts to the already-gimped Fable II: Limited Edition:

We have recently contacted you regarding a market wide problem with the Fable II Collectors Edition. We have since been informed by Microsoft that there has been a further complication.

They have advised us that the developer diary and soundtrack are no longer going to be available on the bonus DVD.

We are very disappointed and would like to reassure you that your Collectors Edition will still include:

  • Bonus DVD with new 'Making-of' Feature.
  • Bonus in-game content (requires Xbox LIVE), including:

    • The Hall of the Dead Dungeon
    • The Wreckager Legendary Cutlass Weapon
    • Spartan armor and energy sword
  • A Lionhead developer countered the claim, stating that the soundtrack was never part of the Limited Edition. However, the GAME product page states that the bonus was "music from soundtrack," not the whole shebang.

Far Cry 2 Pre-Order Missions Add "Hours of Gameplay"
My worst fears confirmed - if you don't pre-order Far Cry 2 before reviews arrive, you'll miss out on four backstory missions that add "hours of gameplay."

When you pre-order Far Cry 2, you’ll get four exclusive additional missions, which will tell the story of what happened before the events in the main Far Cry 2 game. Here’s information of what the missions are:

  • The Georgian: The Georgian informant has gone into hiding at the Fuel Depot in UFLL territory, find him and discover what your predecessor learned from him about the Jackal’s location.
  • The Bolivian: The Bolivian informant is on the run, trying to escape the country by stealing a plane from a small airfield in APR territory. Try to get to him before your predecessor does.
  • Special Delivery: Your employers have more information for you about your predecessor – learn the location of his new dead drop and raid it to find information about his secret meetings.
  • Le Francais: A French smuggler and arms dealer who may have been providing arms to the Jackal has been tipped off, and your predecessor is trying to stop him from crossing the border. Find out what Frenchman’s price is.

  • Pre-ordering through the Ubisoft Store gets you one of 1500 purses, 42 of which lead to a prize.

Demon's Souls takes place in the kingdom of Boletaria, currently enshrouded in a deep fog thanks to its king inadvertently unleashing an ancient monster from his slumber. You, a nameless hero who you're free to customize Elder Scrolls-style, must penetrate into Boletaria and save the kingdom -- but like many US RPGs these days, the game is slated to be extremely open-ended. "You get only the barest minimum of a goal, and there's nothing forcing you to do anything in the game," Kajii said. "People say to you 'Save the world,' but you can ignore them and keep going if you like."

Classic tracks and men on bikes. That's a succinct summary...

The game is set in the last years of the roaring 1960's, a time of Sex, Drugs and Rock 'N Roll. The biker movement, rock music and the hippie counterculture all add to the fascinating atmosphere to be experienced in 'Ride to Hell'.

Action loaded from the very start with free roaming environments, players can immerse themselves in the liberty and freedom of riding full throttle with their gang on a multitude of different vehicles through the dusty flats of Western America. Protecting their turf, their brothers and their machines from rival gangs is just a taste of what this epic game will involve.

'Ride to Hell' is not for the faint hearted; it's aimed heavily at the player who wants to become fully involved in the original West Coast biker culture. With its hard drinking, bare knuckle environment, this is as close to the action as you can get.

Jenny McCarthy Red Alert 3 Photos
Some wallpaper-sized photos of Jenny McCarthy in her role as RA3's Tanya.

Jenny McCarthy (born November 1, 1972) is an American model, comedian, actress, author and activist. She started her career as a model in October 1993 and later began a career in television and film when selected by MTV to be the host of a new dating show called Singled Out. The show became one of MTV's hottest programs and opened the door for Jenny as an actor, and the star of her own MTV sketch comedy show, The Jenny McCarthy Show. She would later star in such feature films as BASEketball, Scream 3, John Tucker Must Die, and guest star on a number of hit TV shows including Two and a Half Men, Charmed, The Drew Carey Show, and Just Shoot Me! McCarthy is also the best-selling author of such books as LOUDER THAN WORDS and MOTHER WARRIORS: A Nation of Parents Healing Autism Against All Odds.

This is Jenny McCarthy's first starring role in a video game. "What I realized is Red Alert 3 is not just a video game, it's absolutely an interactive movie. This is where the people at home get to move the story forward, and where seeing the plot thicken is a reward for a job well done. And that's really cool."
