Bethesda Comments on Fallout 3 Piracy
So um, yeah, it looks like game piracy isn't just a PC problem after all as Bethesda has commented about the leaked Xbox 360 version of Fallout 3 that has been making the rounds (please no links, thx).
When we contacted Bethesda Software about the matter, Pete Hines responded "We're looking into it. Since we haven't sent out a single disc, it greatly reduces the number of places this might have come from." Time will tell if the version that leaked was an older build from Bethesda or retail copy that may have been swiped from a manufacturing plant.
New Diablo III Character Class: The Wizard
- 16 Comments
Joining the Barbarian and the Witch Doctor, the Wizard is Diablo III's newest character class and will be playable at BlizzCon, which is now underway:

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today offered the public the first-ever opportunity to play an early version of its highly anticipated action-role-playing game, Diablo III. Players at the BlizzCon 2008 gaming convention in Anaheim, California, adventured alongside fellow attendees, fighting the hordes of the Burning Hells in one of the game's early dungeons. "Until now, no one outside the company has been able to play Diablo III -- we're excited to offer the first such opportunity to the gamers here at BlizzCon," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're working hard to make sure Diablo III lives up to the high standards of the first two games in the series, and we look forward to hearing what players think."

During the show, Blizzard Entertainment also unveiled the game's third playable class: the wizard. A wielder of the elements and a master manipulator of time, the wizard can hurl environment-shattering lightning bolts, channel explosive arcane energies, and create pockets of space outside the normal temporal flow. BlizzCon attendees were able to adventure as either the wizard or the previously unveiled barbarian or witch doctor, battling alone or with up to three other players through the catacombs beneath Tristram Cathedral to a final showdown with the Skeleton King. First announced at the Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational in June 2008, Diablo III picks up twenty years after the events of Diablo II, as a fiery omen from the sky heralds the return of dark forces to the mortal realm. Players will take on the role of one of five champions, collecting powerful spells, abilities, and items as they clash with twisted demons and explore the dark corners of the world of (more) Sanctuary. Diablo III will feature unique random scripted quests, destructible environments, and cooperative and competitive play online through an upgraded version of Blizzard Entertainment's Battle.net gaming service.

Atari and Eden Games made so many alterations to the PlayStation 3 version of Alone In the Dark, they felt that a name change was in order:

One of this year's most innovative video games will get a blazing rework for its PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system debut this November as Atari ignites Alone in the Dark: Inferno. Development studio Eden Games has responded to the feedback of media and gamers and has turned up the heat to deliver an even more entertaining, immersive and action-packed blockbuster experience for PLAYSTATION 3 system. The hosts of sizzling gameplay enhancements, red-hot content and the hellish storyline have inspired the name Alone in the Dark: Inferno for the ultimate Alone in the Dark experience on PLAYSTATION 3 system.

However, the new edition will fully complement the intense storytelling and unprecedented environmental interactions with an array of improved gameplay elements that will give gamers the ultimate Alone in the Dark experience.

White Knight Chronicles Info & Screenshots
- 5 Comments
The Playstation Blog also brings us the first solid details regarding White Knight Chronicles, a massively anticipated Playstation 3 action-RPG from Level-5:

During the princess of Balandor’s coming of age ceremony, a group known as the “Wizard” raids the kingdom looking for the power of “Knight.”

A young man named Leonard escapes into a cellar and finds a mysterious set of armor, which transforms him into the White Knight, and he defeates the Wizard’s enormous monster. However, the princess was kidnapped during the battle. Leonard sets off with his newfound power to find the kidnapped princess.

Players can freely register commands into the “function palettes”. You can create and name your own combos to be used in an active-time battle using simple controls. Many, many combinations are possible.

Sometimes you (and your friends) are going to come face-to-face with incredibly large enemies, impervious to most of your attacks. But you’ll likely want to transform into one of the huge Knight characters. But it’s possible to fight successfully with a mix of small and transformed warriors.

When offline, Leonard is the main character and plays through the story. When online, up to 4 players cooperate to battle as their created character. A video demonstrates a number of characters traveling together through the countryside, the customization options. Male and female characters are shown, with vastly different looks. The type of character (warrior, magic user, etc) is customizable as well. Players can invite others from within the game, and another joins.

Resistance: Retribution & Resistance 2 Interoperability Revealed
- 1 Comment
The official Playstation Blog details some extremely neat interoperability between Resistance 2 and the handheld spin-off, Resistance: Retribution:

Connect R:R to R2 using a USB cable. Go into the R2 options screen, and select “Infect your PSP!” That’s all it takes.

Infected mode provides an alternate story within our alternate history. While in prison for desertion, Grayson is recruited by Specter Lieutenant David LaSalle (from the R2 storyline) and is infected with a mutated version of the Chimeran virus … a different version of the virus that infects Nathan Hale.

While playing in “infected” mode, Grayson wears a Specter uniform and has glowing Chimeran eyes. He gets to use one of the new weapons from R2: the HE .44 Magnum, which fires explosive rounds that can be triggered remotely. He has regenerative health and no longer needs to look for health packs. He can breathe underwater, allowing him to reach hidden areas that he could not reach before. And we’ve added another whole class of Intel that are hidden throughout the levels. Collecting all of the “infected” intel will unlock another R2 weapon, the Plasma Grenades.

Two Versions of No More Heroes 2 For Europe
- 2 Comments
Suda 51 of Grasshopper Manufacture tells Eurogamer that the No More Heroes sequel will come in both violent and non-violent versions for the European market:

"We won't be able to make the same game for all territories," Suda 51 said in interview at the Tokyo Game Show. "For Europe, we're going to release two versions. One extreme version, and one with less violence."

The first No More Heroes featured dismemberment, beheading and showers of blood in the US, but in the Japanese version, enemies exploded in fountains of ash and coins. The European version was the same as the Japanese, which caused some controversy.

No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle will follow the same route, but both versions will be made available in Europe, to please hardcore fans as well as supermarket bosses and German censors.

Recon is Bungie's Last Halo Trilogy Project
- 5 Comments
After Halo 3: Recon ships next fall, Bungie's Halo plate will be empty:

Bungie is currently working on three separate projects, of which only the Halo title is so far known to the public, but according to community and PR director Brian Jarrard that team currently working on Recon won't continue to work on Halo projects in that series once the game ships.

"I don't think so," he said during an interview in Tokyo. "We've already put a couple of map packs out, we do have more maps on the way. We actually have a Mythic map pack coming out early next year. We don't have firm details or a date yet, but we do have one more map pack coming out, and then we do have some maps associated with the actual Recon retail release.

"But I think when this project wraps up in a couple of months that will be the time when that team moves on to something else - part of that team will move on to something else and part of them will probably be absorbed into one of the other projects that are already on the way."

And when asked if that meant Halo 3 Recon would be a "final statement" from Bungie as far as the Halo trilogy was concerned, Jarrard agreed.

Left 4 Dead's $10 Million Ad Campaign
Valve is going all-out in their Left 4 Dead promo campaign:

But the studio is trying to leave as little to chance as possible, as the firm told Edge exclusively on Thursday it will be spending $10 million (£5.9m) on a consumer campaign that will incorporate, television, online, print and outdoor advertising across the country. The game is slated to ship on November 17 on Xbox 360 and PC.

"People had really strong reactions to Left 4 Dead when we started showing it," said Valve managing director Gabe Newell in an interview. "Our pre-orders are running 60 percent ahead of Orange Box. This in combination with the fact that it is a new IP made us think that an extensive marketing program made a lot of sense."

About half of the campaign's dollars will go towards television advertising. Valve has secured 30-second "high impact, premium placement" spots during USC, Notre Dame, Monday Night and Thanksgiving football broadcasts.

A Valve presentation said the commercials will mix humor and horror and will air November 9 through 28 on ABC, ESPN, Fox, MTV, Comedy Central, USA, Spike TV and other networks.

The studio also plans on substantial spending for environmental ads that involve billboards, buses, train station takeovers, jumbotrons, Go Mobile trucks and other venues.

GameSpy: WoW vs WAR
The gals over at GameSpy pit Warhammer Online against World of WarCraft, comparing the two games in a number of catagories.
Fargo: As is clear from the proceeding pages, the "winner" of today's debate depends on what kind of gamer you are. How important is PvP to you? Do you have a powerful gaming system? Do you think raids are important or do you prefer smaller groups? Between Warhammer, Warcraft, and Lord of the Rings Online (kind of a rogue third-party candidate we haven't talked about here) you have a lot of choices if you're looking for online fantasy roleplay. Where do the GameSpy editors fall into line? Let's hash it out...

Saints Row 2 Review
IGN Down Under is the first out of the gate with a review of Saints Row 2:
Saints Row 2's niggles are small but numerous. The difficulty is far more forgiving than it should be, even on Normal. Because the AI is mostly retarded, you can fill up your shotgun ammunition, walk into a room and mostly take out every opponent with a single blast each. Your health bar recharges during moments of quiet, meaning that you can immediately back out of a room and wait ten seconds, refilling your gauge, and then finish off whoever is still standing. It's a shooting gallery and shooting galleries get very old very fast.

Halo 3: Recon Not 'Splinter Cell In Space'
Responding to the use of "stealth" in Microsoft's Halo 3: Recon fact sheet, Bungie staffer Luke Smith clarified that the standalone expansion pack won't be 'Splinter Cell In Space.'

The word "stealth" here isn't really a great word. This isn't a stealth action game like a Splinter Cell game. This is a Bungie-made Halo game where you will play as an ODST, which of course, is different (and no, I'm not talking about how it's different ;b) than playing as a Spartan super soldier. This isn't Halo Cell, Ghost Recon: Halo, Republic Commandalo or whatever.

Edit: Forgot Call of Halo and Gears of Halo.

The Last Remnant Team Talk Up Unreal Engine 4

Speaking to Kotaku about development of UE3-powered The Last Remnant, Game Director Hiroshi Takai mentioned that he and his team had already seen Unreal Engine 4 in action:

Game director Hiroshi Takai pointed out how the team had to get around using the Unreal Engine 3, but that they "didn't have any problems with it." In fact, Takai added that the team is now very much accustomed to working with UE3. "We've seen the next Unreal Engine (Unreal Engine 4), and we cannot wait to get our hands on it," said Takai. Epic, the development behind the Unreal Engine, has said it would not be ready for this generation of consoles, but the next one. "We really enjoy playing with the Unreal Engine," Takai said.

Microsoft: "We've done a great job of innovating"
Eurogamer interviewed Microsoft's John Schappert at the Tokyo Game Show, and when claims that Microsoft is a follower and not a leader surfaced, he spoke his mind:

Eurogamer: One criticism that's been levelled at Microsoft is that you tend to follow rather than innovate. It's been suggested there are elements of the Miis in the New Xbox Experience, and perhaps a little bit of PlayStation Home. What makes this different?

John Schappert: I probably can't go on a little rant. Can I go on a little rant?

    PR Man: Sure.

John Schappert: The innovation criticism is almost ironic to me. You've got the Xbox, which is the console that pioneered hard drives, broadband gaming, online gaming, Achievements and gamercards. It's the console that arguably pioneered first-person shooters in your living room, wireless controllers... I could go on.

I think we've earned our chops in terms of innovation. The games division has some brilliant people who have done amazing things, and who have shaped the industry forever. I think we've done a great job of innovating and we continue to lead.

With respect to Avatars - Miis are wonderful. Nintendo has done great things. But avatars are just a logical extension of what we've had already. We've had a gamercard and a gamer pic; I want to take that to the next level. Now we've got Live parties, we launched the first video store... So I get a little riled there. I think we've done some great things for the industry and for gamers.

I might also add that gamers recognise it. We've done pretty well and we're really happy with our success so far, and proud about what we're launching next.

Halo 3: Recon Trailer & Standalone Expansion Details
    - 21 Comments
Here's your first proper look at Halo 3: Recon, Microsoft's Fall '09, Bungie-made blockbuster:

Developed exclusively for Xbox 360 by acclaimed developer Bungie, "Halo 3: Recon" is a stand-alone expansion that extends the award-winning “Halo 3” experience with hours of new campaign and multiplayer gameplay. The release adds a new dimension to an all-encompassing universe that gamers around the world have known and loved for more than six years.

The new campaign chapter predates the events that unfold in “Halo 3” and gives players a new perspective through the eyes of a new hero in the “Halo” universe. New multiplayer maps ensure that the award-winning Xbox LIVE experience of “Halo 3” continues to thrive.

    Features:

  • All-new campaign content. The “Halo 3: Recon” campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in “Halo 3.” Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter will greatly resemble that of previous “Halo” experiences, “Halo 3: Recon” will require players to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.

  • A new hero: Prepare to drop. Known for their courage, valor and, at times, insanity, ODSTs are among the fiercest UNSC soldiers, priding themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations. While not as large or supernaturally gifted as their Spartan comrades, these “Hell Jumpers” more than compensate with their ferocious attitudes and unwavering nerve.

  • Expanded multiplayer collection. No “Halo” experience would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content, and “Halo 3: Recon” gives fans more of what they love. With exclusive new maps and full Forge options, players will find more multiplayer content than ever before with “Halo 3: Recon.

  • Ever-growing community options. Players will continue to enjoy all the great “Halo 3” technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring and four-player co-op. All of the new multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering endless gameplay customization possibilities for fans.

Japanese super-smash-hit, Monster Hunter Portable 2G, is coming to North America under the guise of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite:

With 500 hours of gameplay and previously unreleased monsters, weapons and missions, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is set to be the biggest game of the series so far. Players can experience the social gaming phenomenon that’s gripping Japan, by adventuring with up to three friends for thrilling multiplayer hunting parties. Throughout the strategic gameplay experience, players are rewarded for their combat maneuvers and tactics, encouraging players to seek out more experienced Monster Hunters and team up with in order to benefit from their experience.

New to Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the fully customizable AI “felyne” companion who will accompany players on quests and gather extra resources and can be shared and traded with other players. Also new to Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the improved “Media Install Option,” which gives players the ability to save portions of the game from UMD to Memory Stick, resulting in much faster load times as well as improved PSP system battery life. Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that they can transfer their character and data from Monster Hunter Freedom 2 over to the new game.

I played my first tier 4 scenario in WAR and came to the conclusion that letting level 40s into the battlegrounds with the rest of the fish probably isn't the best idea. Especially if Mythic expects people to participate in "the end game" (cough). I dunno. I just have a feeling that the frontiers are going to be empty. Well -- on most of the servers at least -- if the current population trends continue...

    Today's question:

What is your definition of a quality end game experience for a MMO?
