CliffyB: Industry Doesn't Properly Value Visionaries
- 3 Comments
Everyone's favorite, and I'm sure, appreciated game designer slash visionary -- Cliff Bleszinski, feels that the Gaming Industry Doesn't Properly Value Visionaries:
"I don't think the industry values visionaries as much as it could. I really don't," said Bleszinksi, who recently completed work on Gears of War 2. His comments came as part of a more extensive discussion set to appear on Gamasutra at a later date.

The designer compared the games industry's attitude towards creative talent to that of the film industry. "As sad as it is, you're only as good as your last game, in many ways," he said. "In Hollywood, at least, you get movie jail for like a year, and you're out, and you get to try and make another good movie. In games, you screw up once, and no one ever wants to hear from you again. It's pretty sad."

Taking Gears of War for example, I'm pretty sure Cliff didn't solo the project, but it's rare to have anyone outside of him talk about it. Back in Unreal Tournament's day, you knew who everyone was as they did interviews and stuff also. I'm not saying Cliff is an attention whore or anything, but that's just how it is...

Registered Champion Online users can now apply to get in on the closed beta for Cryptic Studios' upcoming superhero themed massively multiplayer game.

“This closed beta is an exciting step in the evolution of Champions Online,” said Jack Emmert, chief creative officer for Cryptic Studios. “All of us here in the Cryptic offices have been playing the game for a while now, and we’re excited to invite others in to have as much fun with Champions Online as we’ve been having internally.”

The beta begins sometime next month.

Two Spore Addons on the Way
I think it's just a matter of time before Maxis announces the Spore: Asexual reproduction pack:
The Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack will include more than 100 new creature-building components themed in two distinct styles—charming, cartoon-esque creatures and scary, monster-like creatures. The expansion pack will come with new body parts, paint options, animations, backgrounds and more.

The Space stage expansion pack, on the other hand, will provide fans with deeper Space stage gameplay. In this expansion, players' creatures "will be able to beam down from their spaceships to explore new planets and earn rewards for completing challenging missions." In addition, "a new Adventure Creator will allow players to build and share online their own custom missions, providing almost endless gameplay possibilities."

Crysis: Warhead Gameplay Performance and IQ Report
- 0 Comments
[H] wrangled up another one of its gameplay and performance reports, this time for Crysis Warhead:
Crysis: Warhead is of the same formula that produced the original Crysis, but refined and tweaked a little. The single-player campaign is very short, and it doesn't really involve doing anything extraordinary that wasn't done in the original game. That said the game definitely has personality, thanks to the main character Psycho. Without his commentary, the game would doubtlessly be less interesting. Die-hard Crysis fans will love Warhead, as it is more of the same game, albeit with more explosions. Under some conditions, Crysis: Warhead does perform just slightly better than the original game. Overall however, performance and Image Quality in Crysis: Warhead remain the same with no real noticeable differences compared to Crysis.
THQ to Publish 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
- 3 Comments
50 Cent: Blood on the Sand was one of the games set adrift after the Vivendi/Activision merger, but GamesIndustry reports that the title has found a home at THQ:

According to a listing by the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification, THQ will be publishing 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand.

The game was one of many dropped by Activision following its merger with Vivendi Games.

Last month, amid rumours the title had been canned completely, sources close to developer Swordfish Studios told GamesIndustry.biz that the game was in the final stages of development and was still due a release.

A number of other titles originally due to be released by Vivendi are still without a confirmed publishing partner, including Ghostbusters from Terminal Reality, Double Fine's Brutal Legend and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena from Starbreeze Studios.

World of Goo on Steam
World of Goo, the award-winning puzzle game from 2D Boy, sees its Steam release today:

World of Goo, the independent title from 2D BOY that swept top honors at this year's Independent Games Festival, will make its North American PC debut on October 13, 2008 via Steam, a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC games with over 15 million accounts worldwide.

Recipient of the IGF Design Innovation and Technical Excellence Awards, World of Goo is a physics-based puzzle/construction game made entirely by two guys working out of coffee shops in San Francisco. You may drag and drop living, squirming, talking, globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins, and giant tongues. The millions of Goo Balls that live in the beautiful World of Goo are curious to explore - but they don't know that they are in a game, or that they are extremely delicious.

The Steam PC edition of World of Goo will feature eight Achievements enabled by Steamworks, a complete suite of publishing and development tools available free of charge.

"More people have told us to get World of Goo on Steam than any other title coming this year," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "It has captured the imagination of the press and other members of the industry during its incredible pre-launch campaign, and we're delighted to debut the PC version with Steamworks Achievements."

The game will unlock at around 7 PM EDT.

Ex-Flagship Personnel to Head New Turbine Studio
- 5 Comments
Lord of the Rings Online developer Turbine has hired some former members of Flagship Studios to head up their new development office in Redwood City, California:

MMO developer Turbine (Dungeons & Dragons Online, The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar) opened a new studio in Redwood City, CA, an expansion meant to complement its East Coast operations in Westwood, MA, where the company is based.

Turbine also announced the appointments of Dave Brevik as creative director, Jeff Lind as engineering director, and Matt McKnight as West Coast studio director of the California studio.

Brevik previously served as chief visionary officer at near-defunct Flagship Studios (Hellgate: London), which he also co-founded after spending seven years as both president for Blizzard North and as a director of Blizzard Entertainment.

Prior to Turbine, Lind led Flagship's online services subsidiary, Ping0. Additionally, he worked for six years at Electronic Arts, where he contributed to franchises like The Sims and The Lord of the Rings, as well as alternate reality game Majestic.

Stargate Worlds Beta Begins Wednesday
Closed beta testing begins Wednesday, with open status occurring early next year. To get in on the action, go here.

“This is a huge step for us,” said Joe Ybarra, FireSky senior vice president strategic operations. “We’ve spent the better part of the last two years building our publishing unit and making sure that our Beta and our 2009 launch exceed everyone’s expectations.”

The Stargate Worlds Closed Beta will feature a staggered entry as testers are allowed into the game in waves. New areas and archetypes will be added over the course of the play test until all features are thoroughly tested and bugs are found and fixed.

“This is the home stretch and there’s no time to let up,” said Stargate Worlds Studio Head Dan Elggren. We need these beta testers to put a new set of eyes on the game and help us make Stargate Worlds the success that we all believe it can be.”

In Stargate Worlds, gamers:

  • Feel the heat - Master the battlefield using modern tactics and firepower
  • Travel instantly - Dial up the Stargate to explore dozens of worlds from ancient civilizations to high tech planets
  • Team up - Battle devious and powerful enemies with your friends
  • Find the new you - Pick from seven archetypes with unique skills and styles
  • Don’t fight it – Simulate translation, repair and sabotage with Minigames as your buddies battle it out
  • Advance with the story – New story, missions, weapons and loot delivered regularly

Number #1: Excite customers, thereby guaranteeing software sales - “As long as we can generate excitement, then we will be less affected than other industries."

Number #2: Don't lower hardware prices - "Sony, the Japanese consumer electronics group, has ruled out cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 console before Christmas, insisting that the PS3 is better value than rivals half its price. “The answer is yes, if you’re asking, ‘Are these the prices we’re going with this Christmas?’” said Hirai, president and group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment."

Ya'll have a nice weekend, I trust? I didn't play much WAR but I did manage to discover a tasty new Vodka drink. It was half lemonaid, a couple shots of vodka, topped off with uncut lemon juice over ice. Also, as an interesting footnote, it doubled as an outstanding colon cleansing product as well.

    Today's question:

Do you support Blizzard's decision to turn StarCraft 2 into three seperate games?

    Mythic Makes Raiding Cities Harder
After discovering that capital guards and lords weren't all that they should be, Mythic is buffing them up to provide a more challenging experience in Warhammer Online. They've also made some of the high-level armor sets (that drop from said beings) a little more enticing as well.
Based on our observations and your feedback, we have determined that Fortress Lords and contested capital city guards are not providing the intended level of challenge. These enemies are among the most dangerous in the game, and battles against these deadly adversaries should be nothing short of epic.

As a result of the changes we've made, Fortress Lords and contested city guards will now be even more challenging that they were previously. In order to help players survive these perilous encounters, we have made the following adjustments to two of the game’s high-level armor sets.

It looks it might be a little while before the city raiding thing is properly sorted out.

    LittleBigPlanet Review
EuroGamer's slapped up the first ever online LittleBigPlanet review. Citing the game's incredible -but difficult to use- sandbox, some entertaining platforming, and the potential for what may be released by players, they award Media Molecule's debut title with a 9/10.

The promise that anyone could create something simple and fun and personal with LittleBigPlanet hasn't come true. In a way, it's the opposite of Spore, which makes it easy and fun for every single player to have creative input, but doesn't let any of them change the fabric of the game. LittleBigPlanet lets them run wild, with unprecedented results, but it locks the majority out of the creative process, because it's time-consuming and simply not very enjoyable.

Mostly, we're just happy to see a flagship game for a modern system that's about running from left to right and jumping over things. New ideas are great, great old ideas are better, and LittleBigPlanet has both: it's the future and the past of videogames, rolled into one.

Thirty million Dollars has bought Lord British a seat on the latest space-bound rocket ship:

Richard Garriott is a board member and investor in Space Adventures, the US company that has brokered flights aboard Russian craft for five other millionaires, including the first paying space tourist, California businessman Dennis Tito, in 2001.

He plans to carry out experiments during his voyage, including one involving protein crystal growth, on behalf of companies that he says have footed a "meaningful percentage" of the ticket price.

Mr Garriott has also said he would take photos to record how the Earth's surface has changed in the 35 years since his father's voyage.

Garriott returns to Earth on the 22nd.

Another Activision budget shooter, similar in quality to the god awful Soldier of Fortune: Payback:

Secret Service takes place on Inauguration Day in Washington D.C. An extremist assault has been launched against the capitol - security has been compromised and it is unclear who is friend or foe. There is no time for negotiation as you are thrust out of the shadows and into the line of fire in order to protect the nation’s leaders. The action takes place among famous landmarks and everywhere in between, including both Marine One and Air Force One.

A tactical first person action game full of plot twists and revelations, Secret Service features story and level design contributions by Daniel Arey, who previously worked on Uncharted, the Jak series and the Crash Bandicoot series.

“This game is a unique addition to the first person action genre, with a rich storyline set across famous locations and the need to use both lethal and non-lethal force to achieve your objectives,” said Dave Oxford, Activision Publishing. “Secret Service brings a nice refreshing spin to fans of run-and-gun games.”

Secret Service will be available for $39.99 on Xbox 360, $29.99 for Playstation®2 computer entertainment system, and $19.99 for PC. The Secret Service videogame is not approved, endorsed or authorized by the U.S. Secret Service.

Captain Sulu hamming it up big time:

The longtime ruler of the Empire of the Rising Sun, cherished as a living god by his people. Emperor Yoshiro is a traditionalist who strictly follows the code of bushido, the samurai way of the warrior. He fundamentally believes that the Rising Sun's destiny is to rule the entire world. He also believes he is Emperor by divine right and that his fate is preordained. He rarely shows emotion and often speaks in a seemingly wise tone.
