Gears of War 2 Getting Pirated Weeks Ahead of Release
- 34 Comments
TeamXbox is reporting that Gears of War 2 is now being illegally downloaded by those sleezy pirates that are killing console gaming as we know it:
With so many users getting the game so early, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a pirated copy of Gears of War 2 has already been leaked in its entirety onto warez sites. The pirated copy, which has been created by group x360inT from the NTSC edition of the game, was released early this morning on a private tracker. With a total file size of 6.76GB, the download has been split into 73 RAR files.
Gears of War hits stores on Nov. 7th.
Console Versions of Sacred 2 Pushed to 2009
- 1 Comment
Eurogamer reports that the console versions of Sacred 2: Fallen Angel won't be gracing store shelves until early 2009; however, the English-language PC version is still scheduled to release next month:

Koch Media has told Eurogamer that Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Sacred 2 have slipped to Q1 2009.

Now, only the PC offering will launch on the expected 7th November date. No reason was given for the delay.

Muslim Group Slaps Sony over LittleBigPlanet Recall
- 27 Comments
M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy says Sony was wrong to recall LittleBigPlanet for fear of a backlash:

But M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy told Edge on Monday, “Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted.

“The free market allows for expression of disfavor by simply not purchasing a game that may be offensive.”

Jasser, who has also appeared on CNN, in the Washington Times and National Review, said that not only does the First Amendment support freedom of expression, but Mohammed also “defended the rights of his enemies to critique him in any way even if it was offensive to his own Islamic sensibilities or respect for Koranic scripture.”

Last week, a purported Muslim poster on Europe’s official PlayStation message boards pointed out that an in-game song in LittleBigPlanet, Tapha Niang by Malian kora player Toumani Diabate, contained audio derived from Koran scriptures.

E3 2009's Goal is To Not Suck
The ESA is trying to bring some life back to the once proud E3 expo, reports Kotaku. The goal is to find a balance between letting every Harry, Dick and Blogger in yet keeping the crowds and spectacle down to a dull roar. Kotaku's sources tell them that the show will be roughly 10x as large as it was last year.
The ESA is giving E3 another go in 2009, still trying to find the sweet spot between the ear-splitting boom of the old E3, the painful, panicked confusion of E3 2007 and the dry as dust E3 2008. With the most recent E3 Media and Business Summit suffering from executive and public criticism that the show was an unqualified dud, the ESA may be looking to shift the show back to early June, a time that industry planners think is better compromise between the original E3 and the previous two iterations.

It would not only give publishers more time to spread out announcements between the show and Games Convention and Tokyo Game Show, it would give developers time to ready more polished demos without cutting into the critical development time of the approaching holidays.

Left 4 Dead Achievements
Maximum PC got a hold of the complete achievement list for Valve's Left 4 Dead.
We'd slay zombies all day just for the heck of it, but turns out you can earn some sweet rewards for putting down the undead. Steam (and Xbox 360) achievement points, to be exact. Valve Software has hooked us up with the official full list of Left4Dead's 52 game achievements, which can be earned on both the Survivor and Infected side (in Versus mode). Among our favorites in the list? "Zombie Genocidest", which requires that we kill 53,595 common infected zombies, and "101 Cremations", which you earn by setting 101 infected on fire with the molotov cocktail.
Game Over For Guy Caught Stealing Games From Work
- 15 Comments
Technicolor is a Memphis, Tennessee business that packages, stores, and distributes videogames and DVDs. One of their employees was caught with dozens of stolen copies of Gears of War 2 and Fable II:

An investigation led Memphis police detectives to Technicolor employee Rodney Gray, according to a police affidavit.

Detectives watched Gray leave his room Thursday at the InTown Suites, 3533 Hickory Hill, with a red bag.

They pulled him over for several outstanding driving offenses and found 31 games in the bag.

Detectives went back to the room and found a number of games and DVDs there. He told them he works at Technicolor and took the games and DVDs to sell, the affidavit states.

Developer Epic Games bills "Gears of War II" as the sequel to a "third-person tactical action game" featuring "reluctant war hero" Marcus Fenix. It's scheduled for release Nov. 7.

"Fable II" offers players the chance "to live the life they choose in an unimaginably open world environment," according to developer Lionhead Studios. It's scheduled for release Tuesday.

Officers recovered a total of 97 copies of the games, according to the affidavit. Another 807 DVDs were confiscated. All together, the games and DVDs were valued at more than $100,000.

PC Gaming Alliance Interview
Earlier, Videogamer posted an excerpt of an interview they did with Randy Stude, President of the PC Gaming Alliance. The interview is now online in its entirety:

VideoGamer.com: Would you suggest that for some publishers piracy is their own fault?

RS: Yeah. Any publisher today who's making any game that's going out on any platform and isn't thinking about the potential of piracy with the widespread availability of broadband and the patience that people have to kick-off a download that may take a day or more, if they're not thinking that's a real problem for them or a potential problem for them, then they're going to have challenges and they're going to act like it's a big surprise. It's like anything else in business. If you're not aware of the guy who's trying to steal your product then it's going to get stolen. You don't see the guards of banks walk around with money sacks on the street without proper precaution right? Those days have been gone since the 1700s. If people are getting attacked in the streets and getting their money stolen from them you should probably not take your $20m-$50m investment in any game and leave it to chance.

VideoGamer.com: It doesn't sound like rocket science to me. I don't understand why publishers don't shore up the production line.

RS: Yeah. And that doesn't even mean that at the end of the day someone's not going to hack the game and put it up on a torrent network. There have to be better encryption technologies for the PC. We in the PCGA believe than an industry group such as ours and others out there should be the ones that tackle it from a standards perspective, provide guidance to say, 'probably the best way to do it is something like this...'. We don't have the answer yet today but we would invite anyone who believes piracy is a problem to join our organisation, step up and we'll help you solve the problem from the hardware side and the software side.

Dr. Phil Tackles Videogame Addiction
Tonight, Dr. Phil tackles videogame addiction in an episode entitled 'Virtual Chaos.'

Spending endless hours in front of a computer playing virtual fantasy games can ruin real lives and wreck real marriages, and surprisingly, the average player is 35 years old.

If video games can wreak havoc in adult lives, imagine the effect they could have on children. Dr. Phil challenges parents to audit the video game situation in their home. How much money are you spending on these games? Could you or your child be addicted?

A preview of the episode and its participants can be seen here, Phil's self-diagnosis checklist asks if you are addicted, and how to tune in can be found here.

Dead Space PC Review
Games Radar has one of the first reviews for the PC version of Dead Space that I've seen online.
This would have been a much more compelling horror game if not for the bizarrely sluggish mouse movement, which feels strangely slow and floaty. This is not a sensitivity issue, and occurs even in the main menu. You get used to it eventually, but it makes pinpoint-accuracy abnormally and unnecessarily difficult in a game that demands it more than the average shooter.

Play Magazine Defends New Golden Axe From Naysayers
- 6 Comments
Dave Halverson of Play has a bone to pick with reviewers who are giving low scores to Golden Axe: Beast Rider:

Regarding many of the “reviews” on Sega’s Golden Axe: Beast Rider: Be wary. The majority of these people (can’t call them critics) either didn’t complete a fraction of the game, don’t understand game design, or just plain suck at games. The words “Hack ‘n’ Slash” are an instant red flag. Beast Rider is anything but. Mindlessly flailing in frustration because you can’t get the game's simple controls/timing down is no way to play the game. Most gamers out there who would buy Beast Rider are far better players than the people rushing through a level or two to write these sad reviews; a sad but ever pervasive sign of the times.
Multi-GPU Performance for Crysis Warhead & S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
- 4 Comments
Have or want one of those new-fangled SLI/Crossfire set-ups in your gaming rig? Wonder if it actually does anything that a single card solution isn't capable of pulling off? [H] took a look at Multi-GPU Gameplay performace for Crysis Warhead and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky.
This evaluation is simple; we want to find out what kind of gameplay experience AMD’s CrossFire and NVIDIA’s SLI configurations will allow in two of today’s hottest games. We have been looking for the pinnacle of DirectX 10 gaming, and currently there are two major game releases that both support DX10. We’ve recently looked at gameplay performance and image quality in Crysis: Warhead and Stalker: Clear Sky with single video card configurations. It is now time to test these games with CrossFire and SLI and see what kind of gameplay experience we receive for our investment.
3D Realms Didn't Likey the Max Payne Movie Much
- 6 Comments
Edge Online shot the breeze with 3D Realms' Scott Millers who offered up a number of criticisms of the Max Payne movie which grossed some 18M USD in its debut over the weekend (#1 box office draw).

3D Realms is of course the company that helped back Remedy during the game's development.

"Major Expansion" for Unreal Tournament III Planned
- 35 Comments
Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein tells Eurogamer that an expansion for Unreal Tournament III is in the works:

Epic VP Mark Rein has told Eurogamer that relations with publisher Midway are fine, and that the pair are working together on a "major expansion" for Unreal Tournament 3.

"Midway is still very much the publisher of Unreal Tournament 3," said Rein, dismissing speculation that the two would part ways following a gloomy financial report for the publisher.

"In fact, we're working together on a major expansion to Unreal Tournament 3, that we expect will excite and grow our UT3 customer base which, incidentally, now numbers over a million units sold-through world-wide."

New LittleBigPlanet UK Release Date
The LBP recall kerfluffle will see the game release in the UK on November 5th, a delay of about 12 days:

After issuing a statement that LittleBigPlanet would be released in Europe no later than the week beginning November 3, Sony Europe has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the game will be available in the UK on Wednesday November 5.

The game was officially delayed last week from its original launch of October 24 due to soundtrack lyrics which referenced the Qur'an.

Although games in the UK are usually released on a Friday, some titles are released mid-week to mark the occasion as a retail event.

Fable 2 Reviews: 10/10 From EuroGamer, 9.5/10 From IGN
- 60 Comments
Has Peter Molyneux hit the jackpot, or is it another bad case of hype that'll die down to a 7/10 in two month's time?

There are problems, of course, but they tend to be minor annoyances. Context-sensitive prompts can be a little too sensitive to context, requiring a spot of shuffling back and forth to activate, and dialogue often takes a millisecond too long to load, resulting in a few stilted and unnatural conversations. There's a fair amount of backtracking, too, although fast travel is easily available, and an empty stretch of road is often a chance to enjoy another brief dust-up anyway. And despite the ambition of the game, I encountered precisely two bugs along the way: at one point I found myself trapped in a room I'd just looted when a hat-stand fell across the doorway and I had to fast-travel out, and on another occasion, a prostitute I was talking to got herself wedged in the wall of a townhouse, only to emerge out of the front door a few moments later looking faintly confused by the whole experience.

But these are quibbles compared to the grand scope. It took me two solid days of playing to scramble to the end of the narrative, and during that time, and due to a handful of particularly nasty choices - I had murdered innocents, I had laughed at a few funerals, I had Kicked a Chicken a Good Distance - I had somehow transformed from a nubile cutie in gypsy rags into Oliver Hardy's zombified older sister, bloated and saggy, my rotting skin covered in scars from inept battling, and the remains of my hairdo splattered unappealingly over my sweaty forehead. I had become distinctly unlovable, and yet the game was still willing to show me a good time.

IGN UK gave the game a 9.5/10, despite individual gameplay elements rarely excelling, or exciting:

Invest in Albion, its inhabitants and its history; embrace the power you’re afforded to shape yourself and the world around you and Fable II is an astonishing achievement. It’s not an easily definable, singular vision but an impressive, unparalleled attempt at empowering the player in ways no other game has before. While individual elements might struggle to shine on close scrutiny, it’s their harmonious integration that makes Fable II such a captivating, unforgettable experience. Yes, it breaks little new ground by traditional RPG standards but no game has come close to offering the kind of surprising, compelling, emotional immersion that permeates Fable II. It’s a game that rewards experimentation and exploration, not dogged single-minded persistence, in subtly brilliant ways. And while it’s true that my fat, greedy whore-killing hero has probably had his time in Albion, the world’s constant flux means the game still has other stories to tell – and I’m looking forward to hearing them all.

Call of Duty 5: World At War 3D Screenshot & PC Beta Update
- 11 Comments
Excellent news - the Call of Duty 5: World At War PC multiplayer beta will be open, allowing all users of the official site to participate. The community manager's update also reveals that online functionality will mimic that of the console's, which is a first:

First, the entire key authentication / master server paradigm is changing for the first time in a Call of Duty PC title. In CoD:WW, you will be authenticating in-game against a more global master server. This server will keep track of and maintain unique Profile names (like a screenname) which will be tied to your CD Key. So while username / passwords will not be required to play our game, you will have globally unique profile names.

Why are we doing this? Because also for the first time ever in a Call of Duty PC title, we're bringing Friends and Invites (which are typically console staples) to the PC. So we have built-in Friends functionality. You can add friends, filter your servers by Friends (see which servers your friends are playing in), join their servers, etc. You can also invite any online friends to come join you in your current game. We didn't want the new Squad mechanics we've developed to get watered down on the PC, which is ultimately why we decided to bring you Friends & Invites, and thus globally unique profile names.

Now we understand that clan tags can change frequently, and it would be obnoxious and not very user friendly to keep changing your profile name. So we've added in clan tag prefixes, which will show up in-game. This should allow you to take full advantage of our Friends & Invites features, and still be able to make yourself more uniquely identifiable in-game.

So what does this have to do with the BETA?

You will be required to enter a CD Key for the BETA, much like you will when you get the full game this November. These PC keys will be available to all registered users of CallOfDuty.com, including any new users who sign up after the PC BETA releases. These keys aren't intended to limit the BETA to a certain number of players; they are here to allow you to create these unique profile names for our Friends and Invites features.

How will BETA servers work?

The PC BETA will pretty much be a limited MP distribution of our game. So you will be able to host your own servers, and GSP's will be able to sell BETA servers and put up as many dedicated servers as they'd like. All of this will function as if it were a regular Multiplayer game. It's important to note, that for the BETA, the dedicated server will be Windows only.

Will our XP / accounts / friends transfer over from the BETA?

No, all accounts will be deleted after the BETA, just like on the Xbox 360.

More specifics on when the BETA will be released, how it will be released, and where you'll be receiving your keys will be made available in my next update. Rest assured, we want to get you this BETA just as badly as you want to play it, so your patience is appreciated.

PC Gaming Alliance President On Force Unleashed PC: "Weak Sauce"
Everyone remembers the incident, right? Coming late to the party with a response is Randy Stude, President of the PCGA, a self-appointed organisation that's going to "save" PC gaming:

"That's not an educated answer. In the last several years there have been at least 100 million PCs sold that have the capabilities or better of an Xbox 360. It's ridiculous to say that there's not enough audience for that game potentially and that it falls into this enthusiast extreme category when ported over to the PC. That's an uneducated response."

"LucasArts hasn't made a good PC game in a long time," he said. "That's my opinion. They make some pretty good games for the Wii, you know those little sticks you wave in the air, that seems like a natural fit for a lightsaber game, sure. But I think the last good PC game they made was probably Jedi Knight 2, and even their strategy games weren't that great. So I can understand why they would make that call."

Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment's Price Too Low?
Typically, expansions are too expensive, but in the case of Ironclad's Entrenchment mini-expansion, the developers believe they aren't charging enough:

Do you feel that having a $9.99 price tag with these micro-expansions was the right business move?

Not really, we've kicked ourselves a bit. At this point in development we've realized the price is too low, but the bar is now set for the other two expansions. Our team got overly excited, feature-creep sunk in, and we went over budget in terms of content and features. I suppose from the gamers' point of view it's a good thing, but are going to try and pace ourselves a little better next time around!

Max Payne Movie Moves To Number One
The average-to-abysmally reviewed Max Payne has shot to the top of the U.S. box office with $18 million in takings:

Action-packed "Max Payne" shot its way to the top of the North American box office, grossing $18 million during the video game adaptation's first weekend in theaters, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

The dark, atmospheric film, which stars Mark Wahlberg as a cop in search of the men who killed his wife and child, outshone Oliver Stone's much-talked-about "W.," which debuted at No. 4 with a take of $10.6 million.

"The estimates for 'W.' were all over the place," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "You can't really expect that a politically charged movie like that would take the weekend over a big video game adaptation with a movie star in the lead role."

Fable 2 Co-Op Patch Ready To Go
Molyneux can breathe a sigh of relief - his co-op patch has passed certification and will be available to download as gamers receive their copies:

Terrific news! Lionhead and Microsoft Game Studios confirmed today that the online co-op “Fable II” multiplayer feature update is confirmed for a first day free download on Xbox LIVE, worldwide (21st October). We are pleased to provide “Fable II” fans around the world with the chance to hop in and out of their friend’s “Fable II” worlds, to meet their heroes, dogs, spouses and experience Albion, together online. “Fable II” will be available at retailers throughout North America on October 21 and across Europe on October 24.

I have to admit, reading about Dead Space's control issues on the PC isn't making me want to rush out and buy the game today.. Hopefully the problems were overstated (or can be patched up).

Today's question:

What are some of the best examples of a quality PC port that you can think of?

Feel free to rattle off anything that was released on consoles first. Even if just by a week.

P.S. - My email is acting up again, so the round-ups might have to wait until stuff starts coming in.

Dead Space (PC) Has 2nd Worst Controls, Ever?
Whatifgaming got an "early copy" of Dead Space for the PC and thinks it has the 2nd worst control scheme ever:
The controls are 2nd to the worst controls we’ve seen ever since Path of Neo came to the PC platforms. The smoothness compared to consoles is just not there, and from what we can tell it doesn’t seem like a patch can fix most of the issues. Inventory stack access becomes frustrating when fighting with monsters and aiming for on-the-fly changes. The controls just aren’t smooth. When contacting EA Redwood Shores regarding these issues:

Dead Space for PC is an equivalent experience to that on consoles. The controls are different and customizable, but we feel it’s in the best ability for the players to match what the console experience is like.

Thanks, Blue's News.
Left 4 Dead is Roughly a 6 - 10 Hour Game
- 28 Comments
One nugget OCModShop uncovered via a recent interview with Valve is that Left 4 Dead is roughly a 6-10 hour game when played in co-op mode (with 4 others, I'd assume).
OCMS: Roughly how long is the game and how many new maps will players get for multiplayer?

Chet Faliszek: Left 4 Dead was created to be replayable, so in that sense it is as long as people have been playing de-dust in Counter-Strike. Each campaign takes from one to two and half hours to play in co-op mode. In versus a campaign can take hours to complete as each side plays through the campaign.

That might sound a bit low, but as Chet mentioned, the game is built around replayability.
OXM Gives Fallout 3 a 10
No Mutants Allowed has some excerpts from the Official Xbox Magazine's review of Fallout 3:
By now, you've probably noticed that we're giving Fallout 3 a big ol' score, so in the interests of quelling any outcry - no, this game is not perfect. In particular, we really wish that Bethesda had worked more on the dialogue system. In this post-Mass Effect era, it's disappointing not to hear yourself talk and to have to pick your dialogue options from big blos of text. Other quibbles: NPC chatter often overlaps in a confusing tangle, the third-person view is more than a bit crap, and we were always bummed that in such an otherwise-detailed world, no one noticed the corpses of their friends who we'd just stealthily killed. The biggest annoyance, though, is not being able to fast-travel unless you're outside - commuting sucks enough in real life, so we really resent it in our games!
Thanks Joel and Nina.
Age of Conan Update - PvP Notoriety System & More
- 14 Comments
FunCom's new Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison posted a lengthy update about the second half of the major "lets finish Age of Conan" patch which is coming our way in the next couple weeks. One of the highlights is the PVP Consequence System:
The next game update brings with it a major new game-play feature – a new consequence system for PVP. Off the back of the PVP leveling system introduced in the last update, this new system aims to bring even deeper meaning to PVP and introduce real consequences for your actions. Players will be now run the risk of becoming a criminal or even a murderer depending on their actions in PVP.

If you take part in anti-social actions in PVP, picking on weaker foes and such you will find yourself accruing ‘murder points’ that will eventually mean the attitudes of NPCs in the world will change towards you! Murderers will be outcast from society and will have to depend on new outlaw camps which can be found at remote locations in various different playfields. You will still have access to vendors and travel through these camps, but that will now come at a cost! A consequence for being a dangerous individual!

It will be possible for those evil doers to redeem themselves however. Murderers can try to solve specific quests to lower their murder points to one day receive amnesty and loose the status of a murderer. Until that time other players can hunt down and kill murderers to punish them for their crimes. We think this system will introduce a great new dynamic to PVP game-play. Do you dare to try and live a life outside of the laws of the land? Do you have what it takes to be infamous, or indeed become famous for hunting down these most treacherous of player targets!

I think I'll give Age of Conan another look once this goes live.

I still need to ding 40 in Warhammer Online. Playing is becoming a chore. The only thing worse than traditional grinding is grinding by questing. Ugh. Killing 8 mobs, picking up 4 widgets, using an item in your inventory then speaking to someone in the next zone gets old after about 500 rounds. I enjoy the scenarios, but the XP kind of sucks for them now in tier 4. Plus, the only one anyone plays on my server is Serpent's Hold (or whatever), which is bugged half the time when you try to pick up the thing to bring back to the place. And then there are the idiots who hang on to the thing for the entire game without bringing it back to the place until the clock runs down, so everyone's XP is that much worse. Good times...

Today's question:

Do you think Warhammer Online has any lasting appeal?

P.S. - The site load times were kind of wacked today. Should be fixed now.
