Wargamer Review Wargamer has a review of Hidden & Dangerous 2, written by Pie4Foo. It's a lengthy but well written review, definitely worth your time. Here's a caption. The strength of Hidden & Dangerous 2's gameplay is directly related to its superb and creative mission design. The historical weapons and settings are commonplace to every other World War II shooter out now, but the complexity, depth, and variety of the game's missions really sets Hidden & Dangerous 2 apart. GamePro Review The first review to come out in a while, GamePro takes a look at Hidden & Dangerous 2, giving it 3.5/5 overall. It's a fair review but a bit short. Speaking of guns, there are lots of them, from Japanese Arisaka rifles to U.S. BARs to German MP44s (on a fanboy side note, an FG 42 would've been really nice). Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses, forcing you to plan well before the mission starts. Should you carry a heavy but powerful sub-machine gun or a sniper rifle? Will the standard assault rifle be a better choice? Grenades over a Bazooka? Fortunately, you have the option of letting the game auto select for you, which is great if you just want to get to the action. Due to the open-ended nature of the game, even if you didnt bring the right equipment, you can usually get the job done by taking weapons from armories or dead enemies.

Expansion co-op details Computer and Video Games has released the following information regarding the H&D2; expansion pack currently in the works at Illusion Softworks. Also, the expansion pack will have approximately 10 missions.Speaking to level designer Martin Babarik earlier today, following his re-affirmation that a mission pack is in the works, he went on to say that that co-operative play will be included in this forthcoming add-on for the title - however, he revealed that the anticipated mode will be restricted to the expansion.
"There will be a co-op mode in the mission pack, but just for the missions that are to be included in the mission pack," said Babarik. "There'll be no co-op play for the original game. It would be very difficult to re-make the current missions from Hidden & Dangerous 2 to use the co-op mode because it would mean making extensive changes to the code," he added.

Ferrago Review Ferrago has a review up with a rock-bottom score of 55%, for which the author took a serious lashing from readers. Here's the only quotable part I could find in the review.A strength in H&D; 2: there's a healthy number of levels where the player can choose what to do. Real tactical fighting is on offer here as you can split your team up, maybe one half to scout or lay down suppressing fire while the other half blows up a gun or takes a prisoner. The objectives and goals for the missions are kept fresh throughout the game and players will have the opportunity to blow up battleships and hunt through dense jungle for hidden enemies. There are plenty of environments and locations to take your team through, all of which means that things rarely become repetitive.

CO-OP is back! H&D2; Unofficial reports that PCGamer UK has an article about H&D2; and mentions that an unnamed expansion is in the works at Illusion Softworks and that "it will include a range of new features that didn't make it into the final due to time constraints, including the co-op multiplayer mode". That's definitely good news. I wonder what those other features are??? |

More reviews There is a quick little review at PCGameworld where it scores 73%.Worth Playing also has a review up, with a score of 8.2 and their biggest complaint being the AI. If the AI were better this games final grade would have gone up exponentially. Id be willing to give HD2 another review if I were informed of a patch that promised big AI changes because HD2 could be as good as Ghost Recon with the right tweaks. And thats some high praise, people.

Adrenaline Vault Review The Adrenaline Vault has a very well written review, scoring H&D2; 3.5/5 overall. Their review was right on the money for the most part, in my opinion. Here's a bit on what they had to say about the gameplay.Hidden & Dangerous 2 is a dizzying amount of fun. There is an amazing variety to the missions, the action is intense, and the replay value is huge. The array of things to shoot, drive, and interact with is staggering and keeps everything fresh. Just when you think youve seen it all, they throw something else at you. In the end, you want to hate the game for what it puts you through, but its so much fun that you just find ways to work around the issues because you just cant put it down.

Wicked Toast Review Wicked Toast gave a rather positive review of H&D2; with a score of 4/5.Illusion Softworks have used the same graphical engine they used to create Mafia to bring Hidden & Dangerous up to date. Its thanks to this that the soldier and vehicle modelling are quite convincing. Rendering of textures is also up to par; H&D2; is certainly no ugly duckling. The sound effects are all quite atmospheric with the sounds of the weapons fire being convincing and the chatter both from the commandos and the German soldiers also being quite convincing.

GameShark Review GameShark has a well written review of H&D2;, though they only scored it 5/10. They seemed to like the game with the exception of the bugs and lack of co-op.

Gameplanet Review Gameplanet has written a very nice review of Hidden & Dangerous 2 where it scored 4.5/5 and rated "excellent". This review is considerably more intelligent than some of the others we've seen, and well worth a read. Tactical combat at it's finest; Amazing attention to detail; Plethora of control styles - play how you like; Large environments to fight in; Variety of mission goals to achieve; Long playtime with good repeat play value.Overall there is very little to find fault with Hidden & Dangerous 2. It is an excellent game that has a decent amount of content giving you good value for money. Anyone who wants either a tactical shooter or just likes World War II themed shooters should be moving as fast as possible down to the store to grab this.

H&D2; Unofficial Review H&D2; Unofficial noticed a lack of quality reviews and decided it was time to do something about it by posting their own review with a score of 9/10. It covers the game very well and offers a fair evaluation without sounding too biased. An excellent review by Fugue. At a time when the WW2 gaming market is dominated by on rail FPS H&D2;s slower and tactical approach should at least be given credit for what it is. Few games have as much gameplay crammed into them and by todays standard the single player mode is epic in proportion, try finishing it in a day. The attention to detail is as ever with Illusions games second to none, the superbly realised models, animations and environments combined with the more realistic slant will appeal more to gamers looking for something other than just an adrenaline rush.

Computer & Video Games Review H&D2; Unofficial reports that Computer & Video Games has reviewed H&D2; with, strangely enough, a score of 88/100 on the first page and 9/10 on the last page. It's a good review overall, but they did stumble over the multiplayer portion, claiming that there aren't any vehicles because they would "unbalance the maps". Well, as you know, there are vehicles in multiplayer! Here's a quote. You can actually play through the whole game in Lone Wolf mode but, as you can imagine, the difficulty is multiplied. It does add to the incredible variety on offer though. The environments are startlingly different, from the stark African dunes to dense Burmese jungles (so, so much better than Vietcong's), from beautiful icebergs to awe-inspiring Austrian hills. These are so beautiful in fact, that the Austrian tourist board might want to use them for promotional purposes. Though they might want to edit out the bloodthirsty Nazis.
The gameplay is just as varied: stealth missions, full-on assaults, scuba-diving and even a great defend-the-oasis-fortress-in-the-desert level. And each requires a very different tactical approach.
The attention to realism draws you in completely (until one of those bugs comes along), with weight restrictions, scope drift, and the ability to shoot through canvas or wooden walls. You also get out of breath if you run too much. Forum

Boomtown Review The subtle nuances of Hidden & Dangerous 2 apparently has a tendency to escape most reviewers, as another bland review surfaces at Boomtown. It's not a bad review by any means, but contains very little you wouldn't have known from reading a preview three months ago.Overall score - 8/10. Blues

Reviews First up there is a German review at Just Gamers where the overall score is 80%.Next, Gaming Nexus reviewed H&D2; scoring it 7.6 and making some rather odd comments, suggesting they might not have even played the game. They start off by saying H&D2; "relies a bit too heavily on tactics and not enough on action." That should be your first clue that this reviewer doesn't have a clue. The reviewer then goes on to say that Medal of Honor is the definitive Nazi-killing simulation (LOL, simulation?). He follows that up with this complaint about H&D2;: "To give you an idea of just how difficult this game is to grasp there are so many different commands that the designers had to use the Alt and Shift keys in order to implement more commands." (LOL, again). I guess the Alt and Shift keys were more than he could handle. He goes on to say that interiors in H&D2; look like they were constructed out of Legos (huh?), and then makes his biggest bumbling mistake of the whole review when he says that "It has one of the best co-operative modes that you can find on the market, allowing for multiple people to play through the single-player missions (albeit with different objectives)." OK, obviously this reviewer didn't play much of the game. This review is the absolute epitome of many common misperceptions about H&D2.; Granted, the reviewer has some good points, such as the interface being somewhat difficult to grasp at first. But please, go back and play the game, then review it. Forum

Video Games Life Review Video Games Life posted a great review of H&D2;, giving it 91%. Here's a piece to get you started.Stealth leads to another area of interactivity. The type of ground youre on, a soldiers position, his weapon type (you can get silenced weapons or knives), and his camouflage will all alter the way an enemy sees or hears you (underneath your character portrait is a number telling you how close the enemy has to be before they can hear you). Also, if you can successfully sneak up on an enemy and shoot his weapons out of his hands, fire a few shots on the wall next to him, or do anything that will scare him enough, hell surrender (this can also happen in normal fire fights if the enemy feels outnumbered enough). This gives the player the option to capture that enemy handcuffing them and making his inventory, including his uniform, available. That last point is important, as normally enemy uniforms cannot be worn due to the blood stains and holes created by killing an enemy.

Reviews Three more Hidden & Dangerous 2 reviews are up. Some of these reviews could almost be cut-and-paste affairs from H&D1; reviews, there are so many similarities. Most reviewers seem to agree there's a great game in H&D2; if you can wade through the bugs, "clunky controls", and AI problems. I'll be writing my own synopsis of the game after taking my sweet time finishing it. GameZone rates it 8.3/10.
Gamezillarates it "fans only".
Gamespyrates it 3/5.

Game Revolution Review Game Revolution has a review up and gave the game a "B" rating. The gameplay was described as ultimately fun--despite the bugs--and their biggest complaint seems to be with the "convoluted controls". Does this ring any bells? Anybody recall the reviews from Hidden & Dangerous 1? Well, it's awfully familiar. But go have a read, it's a nice review.

IGN Review IGNposted a review of Hidden & Dangerous 2 and despite the entire review being little more than a series of complaints about everything they could think of, and then some, they still rated the game 7.9 (beats me). The entire gaming industry seems to have become so polluted with watered-down WWII FPS games that no one can see the trees for the forest.

Patch Coming Soon! Tiscali Games has reported that a patch for H&D2; is scheduled for release sometime this week. Here's the scoop:Petr Vochozka, CEO of Illusion Softworks sent us note today, that they plan to release first patch for H&D2; later this week, which should fix all known bugs in singleplayer & multiplayer found in English retail version. In the near future, they plan to release more patches specially intended for supporting multiplayer. Czech version of H&D2; should have this patch already included. Unfortunately he doesn't have more details / readme yet... |
Expansion Pack Planned A recent Q&A; at Gamer.nl briefly talks about an expansion pack for H&D2;, suggesting that cooperative play may in fact be in store.GNL: For the fans it was a huge disapointment to hear the cooperative multiplayer feature was left out of the game, this was one of the best multiplayer features in the original H&D.; Why did you choose not to implement this feature in H&D2;?In multi-play we spent a great deal of time making sure the maps were great and playtesting / balancing. We have three distinct modes in multi-play with Occupation which forces the players to be offensive. Also there is the Objectives mode, which means each team has to achieve all their set tasks to win the game. Lastly we have Deathmatch which everyone would expect. As for some of the things we did not have time to build into the game, we are already working on the expansion pack, so maybe you will find them coming not to far down the line. |
H&D2; Cheats If you're the cheating type, I have posted a bunch of cheats on the Cheats page. Thanks to someone at this post on the unofficial forum. |
Gamespot Review Gamespot got around to reviewing H&D2;, coming down pretty hard on the bugs in the game and giving it a 7.3 overall rating. The reviewer seemed to be pretty frustrated with the bugs and the game in general. This review seems a bit reminiscent of when the first H&D; game came out and some reviewers thought it was fantastic while others thought it was garbage. This is (kind of) one of those "garbage" reviews. There are some valid points though and it's worth reading.

Action Trip Review Action Trip reviewed H&D2;, scoring it at 72/100. They found several noteable bugs in the game but concluded that the good points outway the bad and the gameplay wasn't entirely diminished by the problems they came across. They complimented the game on its wide variety of locations and virsatility of gameplay, as well as it's greatly enhanced tactical command map. Head on over and check it out.The mission goals and settings constantly keep changing. You'll even get to plant underwater magnetic mines on ship hauls in the icy cold waters of Norway. One of the great advantages of this game using the LS3D code is that players get to drive plenty of vehicles. Anything from trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns, to jeeps and German Panzer tanks. The maps are rather large and never entirely linear, and the same can be said about the gameplay. In most cases you'll be able to take several routes to your objectives, and there is always the option to take a more sneakier approach instead of going in all guns blazing. |

Games Domain Review Games Domain has reviewed H&D2; and scored it a healthy 4.5 out of 5 and gave it a Top Game rating. They were impressed with the command system, interface, and graphics. Here they talk about the tactical map.The true masterstroke is the tactical mode, which pauses the game while you assign a number of waypoints to the soldiers under your command. The beauty of it is that a different order can be assigned to each waypoint so that, for instance, you can assign one man to move to an area and attack at will and then move to the next point and hold fire or offer covering fire. While this is happening, you can move freely across the map to see what the potential hazards are and then plan your strategy. In other news, I'll have some more screenshots up tomorrow. So far the single player is very difficult, or should I say challenging. One particularly (unmentioned) sticky mission caught me by surprise when I went for a stealth approach, only to be spotted, and then had an enemy plane continually strafing me. Just when it couldn't get any worse some armour rolled into the base and I was really fit to be tied. I eventually got through it though. Multiplayer is fun when there isn't too much lag. I've had some really good games on the Alps map. That's my favorite at the moment.

Eurogamer Review Eurogamer has written up an excellent review of H&D2;, scoring it 9/10 and dishing out compliments right and left. They did find a few problems with it, most notibly some AI quirkiness, but were by and large thoroughly impressed and none of the issues stopped them from loving the game. Here's what they had to say about the dynamic nature of the gameplay in H&D2.; Time after time there's this almost palpable sense of panic. You know the enemy's out there, but you're never quite sure where (until you've played through the same mission a few times of course). Often they're just going about their business, patrolling a perimeter fence or just standing guard, manning a sentry post. And when there are so many variables to deal with it's not a game you can just mechanically pick your way through, seeing the enemies spawn in precisely the same place every time you play. In H&D; 2 there's a sense that you've got to have your wits about you 100 per cent of the time. You can't just assume you've cleared a section and can safely charge about making loads of noise. |
More Screenshots Uploaded I've uploaded nine more screenshots from the first few missions of the game. You can see them here.

First Impressions and Screenshots I got the game today and have taken a quick peek at it, and I must say it's looking very nice. I played the tutorial and the first couple of missions and spent a few minutes in multiplayer. Aside from a couple crashes to desktop and the sound cutting in and out during weather effects, I'm very impressed so far. I get the feeling that this is going to be the kind of game that gets more and more addictive the longer you play it, much like the original. AI is definitely an improvement over the original game as enemy soldiers will run for cover and then stick their head out just far enough to shoot at you. The graphics are beautiful and weapon sounds are good. The gameplay is definitely methodical and deliberate. This is not MOH:AA, thank goodness!! It's looking great and I'll have a full preview or review written up after completing more of the game. I have posted some screenshots from the training camp and one pic from the first mission for you. Six H&D2; screenshots. Screenshots will be updated daily. |

Computer & Video Games Preview Computer & Video Games posted what appears to be an updated preview. Most of their comments are from a preview posted several weeks ago but a few bits and pieces are new. They drop a hint that there is a mission involving the recovery of a special typewriter from a damaged Nazi battleship...could this be C5M1 revisited??Bigger and better than its predecessor in every way, with more missions, added equipment, a substantially improved interface and, of course, a new 3D engine, H&D2; is looking extremely tasty. Our only concerns lie with the stability of the final game and the AI of the enemy. There wasn't much evidence of any of those dynamic co-ordinated attacks we've been promised, but then it's still early code. Nevertheless, even if it was released tomorrow, H&D2; would easily do away with young pretenders to the tactical shooter throne, such as Ghost Recon and Raven Shield. Gamespy Preview Gamespy posted a brief preview of H&D2;, mostly covering familiar aspects of the game. They seem to have been impressed with it as these comments suggest. H&D2; is shaping up to be one fine-looking game. Real-world uniforms and period weapons were painstakingly researched and photographed (the team admits to having some issue with the authorities in England for taking some of these items out in the open). The results appear to have been worth it; the settings, vehicles, and equipment are among the best ever seen in a WWII game. | HD2 Unofficial Preview w/screenshots The Unofficial H&D; site had a chance to play the first two campaigns from a preview build of H&D2; and have reported that the game is looking very impressive. This preview is a lot meatier than others and really gets into the nuts and bolts -- things that we want to hear. There are also four new screenshots. Here's a bit from it.Essentially it looks and plays like H&D; only with greater control over your team & more thought required, stealth is favoured over run & gun which is what will matter most to H&D; fans, but overall its the tactical side of the game that has been taken to another level. There are so many things I could rave about after spending a relatively short time playing & its hard not to mention some of the things Ive seen, but I dont want to spoil the surprises. Has it been worth the wait? Absolutely, after three years of waiting and some initial concerns Im happy to say H&D2; is stunning to look at, tense, atmospheric and just so much more than I expected it to be. Its a remarkable mix of tactical shooter and RTS which makes this every bit as groundbreaking as the original, some of the missions just have to be seen to be believed & I cant wait to see what the rest of the game has in store. If youve ever wondered why it has taken so long youll soon find out.

Gamespot Hands-on Preview Gamespot recently had a chance to play a preview build of H&D2; and has updated their H&D; coverage with some of their findings. Much of the article covers generally known information. Here's a little bit to interest you.Hidden & Dangerous 2 opens with a lengthy tutorial sequence during which your characters are briefed on the basics of movement. This includes jumping, climbing walls, crouching, lying prone, and crawling on your belly. Completing this and other physically-taxing missions, while carrying lots of equipment, can increase your character's endurance and strength statistics, much like in a role-playing game. | Action Vault Interview Action Vault has an interview up with Graeme Struthers of Gathering. Many of the topics are familiar, as are the answers, but it's a good read nonetheless. Lot's of good comments on the AI and gameplay. Graeme says the game's core audience will be slightly more hardcore and 'considered' than your average console games player, while there is up to 50 hours of gameplay in the game. When asked what will make the game stand out from other similar games, he says, "Throughout the game there are so many small touches that will catch the player's eye or small details that will make the player realize how much effort has gone into the game to make it special." It's also noted that each time you play a mission it will play out differently due to the advanced AI built into it. Sounds great!

Gamespot Q&A; and More New Screenshots Gamespot recently took Luke Vernon from Take2, typed him up in a chair, and forced him to talk about Hidden & Dangerous 2. So what did they learn? Well, about the same as you've been reading everywhere else. The more interesting parts talk about the many different ways H&D2; can be played. Here's a bit of what Luke Vernon had to say on that.As an example of just how dynamic the game experience is, on a press tour about a month ago, the executive producer, Rups, demonstrated the same Arctic campaign level over 30 times and said that it was different each time. On top of this, he even approached the level in the opposite order as suggested by the mission objectives, and that, too, led to a different sequence of events. Also included with the interview are four new screenshots which you can find on Gamespot's H&D2; screenshots page.Post your comments in the forum.

IGN Previews H&D2; IGN has put together a nice preview of H&D2; from their recent experience with the game. Although it's not packed with details, there are a few new screenshots and several good comments worth reading. Here's a bit on the tactical mode available in the single player game.It can get fairly complex to call out orders in the middle of a gunfight or coordinate attacks from several angles at once. For this, there is the tactical mode. When you enter tactical mode, the camera will change to look down on your squad and the game will pause. From this interface, you can give each of the units' waypoints, commands, stances, speed of movement, and aggression levels.
The article suggests the game will be out this month. Thanks Freedom

H&D2; Preview Eurogamer got a chance to play the first two missions from H&D2; and has written a preview from their experience. Here's a quote. Despite your ruse, the Nazi guards are still alert to any suspicious activity, and you'll be rumbled if you spend too long in their company. H&D2; Q&A; Boomtown has finally posted their promised Q&A; followup to their preview of H&D2.; Talking with Luke Vernon of Take-Two, the Q&A; covers several interesting subjects including no co-op, realism of the game, improved control setup, and AI. Vernon confirms a release date at the end of October, however, the beta test got off the ground just yesterday so be prepared for delays. Post your comments in the forums. Here's a quote from the Q&A.; Weve paid much more attention to the use of stealth during action as well as to the role of various physical features in influencing the gameplay. The friendly and enemy artificial intelligence has also been completely rewritten to add the best possible feeling of realism from the games numerous characters. Otherwise the game is as faithful to its roots as possible while still managing to raise the bar from where it last left off. Source: Blues

H&D2; Official Site Back Online After a lengthy reprieve, the H&D2; Official Site is back online in a more "flashy" style with loads of info about the game, and more. There are a few new screenshots, a screensaver, some downloadable wallpapers, an excellent FAQ, and even a couple of 360 degree panoramas from the game's Arctic and North Africa theaters. There is also an excellent tactics section explaining the tactical "overhead view" from which the game can be played. Definitely worth looking around, you're sure to find something interesting. Here's a quote from the Weapons section of the site. Every aspect of the game has been extensively researched for historical accuracy. Significant resources have been spent investigating key locations, uniform detail, personal accounts of the war and gathering expert opinions. The reference books we have collected throughout the project are bloody impressive, standing taller than our biggest art chap when piled one on top of the other.

H&D2; Preview Total Video Games has a preview of Hidden & Dangerous 2. There isn't anything new to report, but here's a bit on the menu and control system. To enable easy on the fly planning of your next move there is a new tactical screen that allows you to move your troops in a manner akin to real time strategy titles. Because of the game engine, as seen in 'Mafia', you can be playing in a first person perspective, then zoom right out into a top down view that allows you command your troops with a clearer view of the battlefield. If you desired you could play the entire game from this tactical view, or none of it, we feel that a healthy balance between the two extremes should serve you best.

H&D2; Q&A; Computer and Video Games has posted an insightful Q&A; with H&D2; publisher Gathering. Some of the more interesting points in the article deal with the gameplay options. As elaborated in the article, the game will have a very open-ended style of play, with three viewing angles (first-person, third-person, or RTS-type overhead tactical). The ability to use real stealth sounds like it may actually be an option this time around. After all, the favored weapon of a covert operative is always his knife (or should be). I was stoked when I read that you will be able to move and hide dead bodies. Yes! It's about time a game like this gave us that option. Another interesting point revealed is that characters will develop their skills as missions progress. Personally, I think this will have a huge impact on how the game is played. Also, they have 16-player multiplayer up and running so we've got that to look forward to, and co-op or not, it's going to rock! There has been a lot of speculaton over the last few months as to whether or not H&D2; will be able to compete with similar titles, and I'll admit I've had my doubts, but it appears to be shaping up nicely by introducing some unique approaches to gameplay. And by the way, the game is due in October if you didn't know.If the link above doesn't take you to the article, just go to the site and do a search on Hidden & Dangerous. Source: Blues

H&D2; Hands on Preview Boomtown had the chance to get some play time with H&D2; and came away with a very good impression of the game. They report the control system was very easy to use, and interestingly, uses some kind of in-game menu which they did not elaborate on. They also were very impressed with the advanced AI -- which is definitely a good sign. The article is quite brief and lacking in juicy details, but worth a read.
