Good Old Games Gets Oddworld
Good Old Games has added a couple of new titles to their stable of low-priced, DRM-free games of yesteryear with Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee:

Today GOG.com (http://www.gog.com), the home of digitally distributed, DRM-free PC classics, and Oddworld Inhabitants announced that the world’s most famous Mudokon, Abe, will soon be sneaking his way into the GOG.com's games catalogue. In order to meet rising demand for games with epic storytelling, top-notch production values and emotionally engaging characters, the ever-so-awesome Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus will be made available at GOG.com… as always, 100% DRM-free, compatible with modern operating systems, stuffed with bonus materials and sold for just a few Spooce… errr… dollars.

“Oddworld Inhabitants created an unbelievable world and fascinating characters that remind us about the pure joys of gaming. It's amazing how the game holds up to today’s games and we're not surprised that many consider these some of the best platform games of all time,” said Adam Oldakowski, Managing Director of GOG.com. “That's why we’re beside ourselves with joy to add these games from the Oddworld universe to the ever-growing catalogue at Good Old Games.”

“We are happy to add the Oddworld series to the GOG.com catalogue. It's a great chance for anyone who’s already played the games to remember why they were so much fun, and also to introduce Abe and his fellow Mudokons to a new generation of gamers,” said Larry Shapiro, President of Oddworld Inhabitants. ”We believe that digital distribution is the future of gaming for both developers and gamers, making GOG.com an ideal fit for Oddworld.”

The Oddworld games will begin to appear in the GOG.com games catalogue with the release of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/oddworld_abes_oddysee) on December 16... oh, that’s today, isn’t it? Uhh… well… Okay, we’re ready? Good news! Check out GOG.com as soon as you can. Stay tuned for the announcements of additional publishers and new site features in the coming weeks.

Fallout 3 DLC Adds New Endings & Raises Level Caps
    - 4 Comments
UGO, who is still online after all, interviewed Bethesda's Jeff Gardiner about the upcoming Fallout 3 downloadable content packs which are said to add about 5 hours of additional gameplay each:
UGO: Will players be allowed to play as their existing characters in the DLC? Since “Broken Steel” takes place after the main story, how will this be addressed? Will it work similarly to Shivering Isles, where the new quests simply get added to your Pipboy, or will you have to load up a brand new game?

Jeff Gardiner: Yes, all of our DLC drops right into an existing game. Which is a double edged sword, or course, it requires a lot of testing and fine balance tuning on our part! In our third DLC, “Broken Steel,” we’ve come up with a way of allowing the player to continue on past the game ending… by changing it! You will not have to load in a new game to play any of the DLC material – though you will have to finish the main quest to experience most of what “Broken Steel” has to offer. That being said, we are raising the level cap, so even if you don’t complete the main quest you can experience the expanded content by leveling up past 20.

Midway Closes BlackSite Studio, Cancels Games, Fires 180 Staff
    - 11 Comments
Perennially-troubled Midway has today announced massive cost cutting measures in an attempt to postpone their inevitable demise:

Midway Games Inc. today announced that the company is taking significant steps to reduce its cost structure, including a reduction in workforce, the closure of its Austin, TX, studio (BlackSite: Area 51), and the suspension of development on several non-core games.

The cost-cutting initiatives will involve a reduction in force across multiple disciplines within the company in its Austin, Chicago and San Diego locations. Headcount will be reduced by approximately one quarter of Midway’s global workforce. The suspended non-core projects were previously scheduled to release in 2010 or 2011 and have not yet been made public.

“The cost-reduction measures are vital for us to rationalize our operations and provide the resources necessary for our core properties to succeed,” said Matt Booty, president and CEO of Midway. “These initiatives, along with the other steps we have taken this year, are a response to the specific challenges we are facing at Midway, many of which have been amplified by the current economic conditions.”

Midway's Securities and Exchange Commission report reveals that severance for the 180 fired staff set them back a further $1.6 million, and that the cancelled games were "non-core prototypes."

Australian F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin 'Ban' Overturned
    - 4 Comments
Games On Net reports that F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin has received the relevant classification required for its release in Australia, despite being refused a rating just last month, leading to the game's effective 'banning.'

"We're obviously extremely pleased with the result from the Classification Review Board, it's a great result for Warner Bros and fans of the franchise. We always believed in the merits of the game as an MA15+ title, and we went in and argued the game on its merits. We're really really pleased that they came up with the decision that they did."

Acting Classification Review Board Convenor, Trevor Griffin agreed:

"After considering extensive submissions and demonstrations of game play across all levels, the Review Board concluded that the level of violence in the computer game, whilst strong, could be accommodated within the MA 15+ classification."

Even more interestingly - this is exactly the same version of the game that was Refused Classification last month.

    Factor 5 Job Losses
Sources close to Edge claim that thirty-seven people have been cut at Factor 5, the struggling Lair developer:

The source, who wished to remain anonymous, said 37 people were laid off from the San Rafael, Calif. studio on Friday afternoon. Around 38 people remain, he said.

"The last time staff got paid was October 15th," the source stated. Workers who were laid off could get paid back this week, although this is unconfirmed.

Word of trouble at Factor 5 went public earlier this month, when Sam Baker, an artist with the studio, posted in his personal blog that workers hadn't been paid for weeks, health care was nixed and a project eight months deep had been canned. The firm had been urgently scrounging for funding in order to maintain operations, said Baker.

Since his blog posting, Baker has resigned from the studio. Our source said the widespread news coverage of Baker's post "was quite shocking" to the artist. "He's young, and was totally devastated by his new found fame. He didn't think anything of it, innocently posting his heartfelt concerns."

But that might not be the end of the effects surrounding the post, which was later deleted. "The kicker is, Factor 5 is thinking of suing [Baker] for good measure."

Grand Theft Auto IV PC Gameplay Performance and IQ
    - 27 Comments
[H] was brave enough to play GTA IV PC and brought back a Gameplay Performance and IQ Report:
Grand Theft Auto IV is certainly a challenge for today’s latest video cards, even though it is "only" a DX9 title. We are disheartened at the lack of AA and AF support in the PC version. It is quite clear, with the sparse graphics options available, and the lack of AA and AF support that this game is a console port. There really is no excuse for the lack of AA and AF support in 2008 in a new PC gaming title, especially one of this stature.

While those features are missing, the game still performs rather horribly compared to more recent games. There are theories as to why it may of course, but no real proof why it behaves like it does. One theory is that the engine itself just isn’t geared or optimized for the PC that well. Another valid theory is that the game relies heavily on the CPU, and thus that is what is holding the game back. We’ve seen this theory be the reality in a couple of games, such as Flight Simulator X and The Sims series in the past.

Was Microsoft Aware of Xbox 360 Disc-Scratching Problem?
A filed motion that's attempting to turn the Xbox 360's disc-scratching problem into a class-action lawsuit contains testimony that claims Microsoft knew about the issue:

The motion contains testimony from program manager Hiroo Umeno, which claims that the manufacturer was well aware of the damage that could be caused to discs when players repositioned their consoles. "This is ... information that we as a team, optical disc drive team, knew about. When we first discovered the problem in September or October, when we got a first report of disc movement, we knew this is what’s causing the problem."

There are also allegations that the company considered and rejected three possible solutions to this issue before the console was released: the first solution would have increased the magnetic force of the disc holder was rejected because, "it would allegedly interfere with the mechanism that opened and closed the disc tray,"; the second would have required slowing disc rotation speed to 8x, but was ruled against because it would have apparently increased loading times; the final solution would have involved installing soft patches called "bumpers" (routinely used in other consumer optical disc drives), but was deemed too costly to implement at $0.50 per console.

The motion - in .PDF form - can be found here.

    A Tribute to 3DFX
A tribute to 3dfx: Eight years out of business is a tear jerker over at PCGH looking back at the 3D graphics company that was:
Our young readers might know about the concerned company from hearsay only, because eight years are quite some time. De facto 3dfx has been dead for longer than it has been alive: The lifetime of the 3D pioneer lasted only six years, from 1994 to 2000. 3Dfx's story of success (with a capital D initially; pronounced like 3D effects) didn't begin before 1996 though. With the introduction of the Voodoo Graphics (Codename SST-1) the small company became market leader over night. This wasn't caused because a good product was sold for low prices. No, it started a downright revolution: With the first Voodoo, a 3D accelerator that was intended to work alongside the back then common 2D cards, 3dfx paved the way the way for modern graphics cards. For the first time it was possible to accelerate polygonal designed game environments with a dedicated chip and to interpolate the once blocky textures bilinear. With a Voodoo a Pentium 133 became a fast gaming system that even outclassed the most expensive Pentium 200 in optimized games.
Creators of the Phantom Console Open Online Game Store
    - 11 Comments
Phantom Entertainment, who at one time were attempting to make a gaming console, have gotten into the downloadable game business:

Phantom Entertainment today launched its highly anticipated online game store, located at gamestore.phantom.net. The game store features an impressive catalog of over 2,600 PC games including top sellers like Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2. The store allows for outright purchasing of video games or try before you buy, and features level 4 merchant abilities. It uses a highly advanced content licensing management system to track all games purchased, so once a game is paid for and downloaded, the user owns the license forever and can return to re-download the game in the future without incurring additional cost.

This is all made possible by a strategic partnership with GameStreamer, Inc. and their Enterprise Class Gaming Network built on top of Savvis Communications Tier 1 backbone and data centers. GameStreamer is diligently working on implementing technology to enhance its offering and providing unparalleled service to its users. Some of the enhancements will include a streaming system, subscription support, rentals, timed trials and complete automations with its content and distribution partners.

Phantom Entertainment is also announcing today that they have secured financing and have placed an order with its contract manufacturer to mass manufacture the Phantom Lapboard. The units will be arriving in January and be available for purchase on the Phantom.net website. Phantom Entertainment has been working diligently to address the needs and concerns of large big box retailers and OEM manufacturers to deliver upon their expectations of building an order history. The Lapboard is positioned to be the selection of choice for the evolving market for digital media centers, set-top boxes and devices in the living room or automobiles. Phantom Entertainment’s mission is to deliver our lapboards with the highest quality and customer satisfaction.

    Metallica Talks Guitar Hero
USA Today interviewed Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett of Metallica, who talk a little bit about the latest Guitar Hero game, which just happens to bear their band's name:

Q: How did this game come about?

Flores: I think their interest in the project really fueled it. Both Lars' and (singer) James (Hetfield's) kids play Guitar Hero and they were really excited about it. They wanted to do it and, of course, we wanted to do it, so it made sense.

Ulrich: I think my kids decided for me. I was first introduced to Guitar Hero in my house about a year ago by my kids (sons Myles, 10, and Layne, 7; he also has a 1-year-old son, Bryce, with his girlfriend, actress Connie Nielsen). They became big fans of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and all the bands I grew up on. It seemed like this was the first video game that really brought the family together.

We were all sitting there and we were all sharing it. It wasn't something that was just about the person playing, it was about everybody. It became a collective thing. This thing on a worldwide basis was obviously turning into a phenomenon. There is a saying in Metallicaland: "This is what we call a no-brainer."

Hammett: I don't play video games very much, but I love what Guitar Hero does for young kids, actually kids of all ages.

With 505 Games’ global reach, we look forward to leveraging the powerful digital entertainment medium to bring Michael’s passion for sports and competition to new audiences around the world.”

505 Games and Phelps are currently in the development stages for the first-of-its-kind videogame that may also include some of his teammates. In addition, 505 Games will donate a portion of the videogame proceeds to the Michael Phelps Foundation.

“I am really excited to partner with 505 Games and work with them to develop a game that is reflective of my personality, lifestyle and competitive nature,” said Phelps. “I believe this will be a tremendous opportunity to help continue my quest to raise the profile for the sport of swimming.”

Age of Conan: DirectX 9 vs. DirectX 10
The Vault has a number of comparative Age of Conan DirectX 9 vs. DirectX 10 screenshots online for your viewing pleasure:

Initial impressions in the official testlive forum include reports of crashing, some visual glitches and flickering, impressive underwater effects, sluggish gameplay not associated with frame rates, no wind in trees (yet), and difficulty detecting volumetric fog.

Like myself, many believe that this initial DX10 update is a wonderful start with a great effort by Funcom. No doubt there will be many testlive patches prior to the actual live launch of DX10. So far it's looking great, the biggest issues seem to be crashing and frame rates.

While most people are not reporting a large, if any, drop in FPS when running DX10, I have experienced rather dramatic drops.

    DX9 Average FPS: 52.3
    DX10 Average FPS: 20.2

Deal Of The Day: Xbox 360 For £98

Struggling British retailer, Zavvi, has today cut the price of an Arcade Xbox 360 to just £98. Premium models are priced at £128, and Elite at £196.

Unfortunately, supply-chain issues have caused the retailer to stop game-related sales on their website, so you'll have to head down to your local store to grab a bargain.

    God of War III Trailer
Was David Jaffe right to get so damn hyped?

"We have large shoes to fill following the success of the previously released God of War titles," said Stig Asmussen, Game Director for God of War 3. "But with refined gameplay and jaw-dropping visuals, I guarantee that God of War will give fans what they have been eagerly waiting for, and much more."

Set in the realm of Greek mythology, God of War 3 is a single-player game that allows players to take on the climatic role of the ex-Spartan warrior, Kratos, as he treads through the intimidating heights of Mt. Olympus and the dark depths of Hell once more to seek revenge on those who have betrayed him. Armed with double-chained blades, Kratos must take on mythology's darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest to destroy Olympus.

Utilizing a new game engine built from the ground up and state-of-the-art visual technologies, the development team behind God of War 3 have made significant strides in giving players the realistic feel of actually being on the battlegrounds. With texture resolutions being quadrupled since God of War 2, God of War 3 will feature fluid, life-like characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos' fateful quest. Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale with many more enemies on-screen and be able to interact with levels like never before.

    Dante's Inferno Trailer
Famous tale turned into an action game by EA's Dead Space developers:

An abducted soul, a lifetime of sins, a journey to the depths of despair. Electronic Arts Inc. announced today that EA Redwood Shores, the studio behind hit horror game Dead Space, is making Dante’s Inferno – a third-person action adventure adaptation of the medieval epic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. The dark fiction gave birth to the Tuscan Italian dialect and is widely considered to have defined the western world’s contemporary conception of hell and purgatory. The poem tells the tale of Dante who journeys through the twisted, menacing nine circles of hell in pursuit of his beloved Beatrice.

Written in the 14th Century, The Divine Comedy was published and read aloud in Italian (unlike the Bible), thereby making the poem accessible to the mass public. The poem delivers a striking and allegorical vision of the Christian afterlife and the punishments of hell. In part one, known as Dante’s Inferno, Dante traverses all nine circles of hell; limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery.

“The time is right for the world of interactive entertainment to adapt this literary masterpiece, and to re-introduce Dante to an audience that, until now, may have been unfamiliar with the remarkable details of this great work of art,” said Jonathan Knight, executive producer for Dante’s Inferno. “It’s the perfect opportunity to fuse great gameplay with great story.”
