Hopefully this little cold I caught over the weekend has run its course 'cause I'm all out of smoothies...

Today's question:

Now that you've spent a few days playing around with Windows 7, do you think it's worth upgrading to over Vista?

Mirror's Edge PC Review
The chaps at Eurogamer slapped up a review of Mirror's Edge on the PC: Overall score was an 8/10:
For all its flaws, though, we're still in love. Mastering the game's in-body platforming is an urgent thrill, beaten down less violently here under the auspices of our old friends keyboard and mouse, and stands out from the homogenised interfaces of modern first-person and platform games. The quality of EA's 2008 output was a pleasant surprise almost throughout, but even among its several triumphs this is the only game confident enough to merely reward you with a heightened command of what you were already doing - and the only one where that more than sufficed.
WGA Nominees Announced

The Writer's Guild of America has announced its Nominees for best writing in a video game. Snip:
The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for its second annual Videogame Writing Award, honoring Fallout 3, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!

The award was first given in 2008, with its stated goal to "encourage storytelling excellence in videogames, improve the status of writers, and foster uniform standards within the gaming industry."

Dark Void Impressions
The makers of Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge are hard at work on a new game called Dark Void:
“When we were younger, we’d go around saying, ‘If you had one superpower, would it be invisibility or flight?’,” recalls Dark Void lead designer Jose Perez. “Flight was the one where that was freedom. You’re not going to do that in real life, on that level.”

“And not doing it in a plane enhances that,” adds Matt Brunner, the game’s art director.

Big Left 4 Dead Patch This Week
Valve's lovely and talented Chet Faliszek told CS-Nation that an update for Left 4 Dead is coming out this week. Yes, it is long overdue, but as you can see below -- they needed to re-write a buncha code for it:
Sadly Microsoft has nothing to do with the pc patch... that delay is all us. The PC and 360 will be patched independently not sure where people picked up that exploit/bug fixing was tied together. Only the DLC will be simultaneous. The problem on the PC side was a few large bugs affected other systems that we were going to rewrite on the pc so we ended up waiting to fix a whole class of bugs instead of just individual bugs. The patch should be out this week.
Age of Conan Server Merger Listed
This week, FunCom will be merging a bunch of Age of Conan servers together which should make things a bit more interesting. Most of the Euro servers have a healthy enough population to be left alone but the 18 US ones are being cut down to 6. With 2 new "fresh start" servers going live as well.
CoD: World at War Gameplay Performance and IQ
- 3 Comments
The boys over at [H] slapped up a nice CoD: World at War Gameplay Performance and IQ report:
From a performance standpoint, the game runs smoothly on a wide gamut of video cards, though slightly more graphically demanding than its predecessor. At 2560x1600, your best value for Call of Duty: World at War is, without a doubt, a GeForce GTX 280. You can buy one of those right now for $285 USD after MIR, and it even comes with free shipping. One notch down, at 1920x1200, the best buy we can recommend right now is a 1GB Radeon HD 4870, available for $224.99 USD after MIR. Finally, if you have a 20" or 22" widescreen LCD monitor, running at 1680x1050, you don't need to waste your money on a high end card. You can get an ATI Radeon HD 4850 for a mere $124.99 USD, after MIR, and you will be all set for Call of Duty: World at War.

Lara Croft May Get A Female-Friendly Makeover
- 38 Comments
With a "disappointing" 1.5 million sales in two months, Eidos may ease back on promoting Lara's 'assets' to make the Tomb Raider franchise more female-friendly:

Eidos is considering revising the look and play of her Tomb Raider adventures, which may see efforts to make her more female-friendly, in an attempt to revive sales of games starring the pneumatic archaeologist.

Her proportions are said to be the result of a design error, when Toby Gard, a graphic artist, accidentally increased her bust-size to 150 per cent of what he intended it to be. The error proved popular with the rest of the design team, and he was persuaded to retain her physique.

Robert Brent, the chief financial officer of Eidos, said: “We need to look at everything, as we develop the next game. Look at how Batman changed succesfully, from the rather sad character of the Michael Keaton era to the noir style of The Dark Knight.”

In related news, the disappointing sales led to thirty lay-offs at developer Crystal Dynamics.

Neversoft Give Up On Tony Hawk, Focuses On Guitar Hero
- 9 Comments
Neversoft has generated buckets of cash for Activision with their Tony Hawk franchise, but now, following declining scores and decreasing revenues, the developer has given its baby to another developer, and refocussed itself to help churn out the numerous Guitar Hero spin-offs:

Neversoft plans to release more sequels to the "Guitar Hero" series — including the much-ballyhooed "Guitar Hero: Metallica" set for release during the first quarter of this year — but the company has let the Tony Hawk series go to another developer.

"It's probably best for the franchise ... it's time for someone else to add fresh ideas to it," Jewett said.

As for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, released late 2007, it has generated over $1 billion in sales. A first, apparently.

Fable II Patched
Fable II has received a much-needed patch ahead of tomorrow's Knothole Island DLC launch:

  • The Ritual/Monk’s Quest – Fixed the issue with the Abbott becoming unresponsive if you leave Oakfield before he finishes talking. This will fix the problem if you’ve already hit it, too.
  • Rescuing Charlie/Rescue My Baby – after rescuing Charlie, you can now able to interact with objects
  • Guild Cave chest – resolves any issues with previously inability to retrieve items unlocked from Limited Collector’s Edition, website or Chicken Kickin’ game. If you’ve already hit this bug you should now get your items.
  • The Spire (Pt2) – no more issues with ship captain being unresponsive
  • The Hero of Skill (Pirate King) – you’ll no longer get stuck during Hero of Skill quest (Bloodstone)
  • T.O.B.Y./Trouble In Bloodstone – you’ll no longer get stuck during T.O.B.Y. quests (Bloodstone)
  • Your child
  • will no longer be chosen as an assassination target
  • Furniture Shop in Albion (Bowerstone) will now always have something for sale
  • Additional unspecified fixes

Welp, I caught one humdinger of a cold. I guess sleeping with the windows open in January isn't the best of ideas; even here in sunny Arizona. Speaking of Arizona -- go Cardinals! That victory over Carolina was unbelievable. If they win next week against the Eagles, we get to go to the Super Bowl! The whole thing is totally mind bottling! Anyhoo, Dayquil + Clariton-D (the good kind) should keep me going. I'm still sick, but when I'm all hopped up on this stuff, I really don't care...

Today's question:

What do you think the big underdog hit game of 2009 will be?
