Google Chrome Coming to Mac

January 13, 2009 - Since its full release out of beta mode, Chrome, the new web browser developed by Google, has been meeting and/or exceeding the expectations of PC users around the globe. Sporting extreme ease of use and other helpful features (for the full IGN report on Google Chrome click here.), the browser appears to be off to a good start. One of the only problems though, is that Mac and Linux users, as usual, were left out in the cold for the initial release of Chrome. Today, Google Chrome representatives confirmed that they hope to get a working version out to Mac/Linux customers sometime within the first half of 2009. More »

The Trends of CES 2009

January 12, 2009 - For over forty years, the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has served as the prelude to a year's worth of development. Every year, thousands of exhibitors, journalists, and retailers flood the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center to catch a glimpse of what will be the hottest technological trends in the weeks, months, and years that will follow. After all, it was here that the public got to witness the VCR make its North American debut in 1970, Atari's home Pong console in 1975, the CD player in 1981, the HDTV in 1998, and the Xbox in 2001. Microsoft UK Testing IPTV on the 360

January 12, 2009 - More and more, the Xbox 360 is becoming a media center as well as a gaming system, which was Microsoft's dream for the console from its inception. First came the Xbox Live Marketplace's video purchase and rental service. Then came live streaming of Netflix movies. But is Internet television the next big thing for the 360? More »

CES 2009: Disney Star Guitarist

January 11, 2009 - Rock Band and Guitar Hero are each certified phenomena, but neither actually do anything to advance personal knowledge of playing an actual guitar. If anything, they only serve as a gateway to inspire players to consider taking up the real thing. However, the requires stepping away from the console and either finding a good tutor or just noodling five strings over and over until you can actual bang out a melody. Disney Star Guitarist looks like the bridge between Rock Band and enrolling in the school of rock. More »

CES 2009: Portable NES

January 11, 2009 - The Innex booth inside the gaming-centric area of CES (imagine lots of peripheral manufacturers, though, Sony and Microsoft have their own booths) is playing host to a number of retrogamer delights, such as the Retro Duo (NES/SNES combo) and the FC Mobile, which is a portable NES that is approximately the size of a Game Gear and plays classic NES carts. Those carts are huge in comparison to the FC Mobile, so there is plenty of overhang sticking out of the top of the handheld when you slide in your old copy of Metroid. More »

CES 2009: Xtractaurs Dino Toys

January 11, 2009 - Most attention at CES is on things like 3D televisions and wristwatch cellphones, but those with a little turbonerd DNA are rewarded when they stop by Mattel's booth. Not only is the toy giant showing off the brain-control Mind Flex that lets you manipulate a ball with your thoughts, but Mattels' upcoming line of Xtractaurs dinosaur toys could have the juice to be one of this holiday's biggest hits. The Xtractaurs are a collection of plastic dinosaur action figures with little plugs somewhere on their hides. When the dino is prodded with a light-up extraction gun, DNA is "pulled" from the mighty beast and uploaded to an online arena for gene manipulation, minigames, and virtual prehistoric combat. CES 2009: Mattel's Mind Flex Toy

January 11, 2009 - Just as videogames evolve, so do toys. The star of Mattel's CES booth in Las Vegas this week is the Mind Flex, a mind-controlled skill toy that operates via brain waves. Using your thoughts to approximate telekinesis, the ability to control matter with the mind, a small purple ball rises into the air via a column of air. Once you concentrate hard enough to raise the ball, you try to get it through an obstacle course with hoops, ledges and gates. The more you intensely think about the sphere, the higher it goes. When you relax, the ball drops. More »

CES 2009: LG Vu CU920

January 10, 2009 - So, you want a touch screen cellphone that plays music, video, and surfs the Internet -- but you just cannot bring yourself to buy an iPhone? The LG Vu CU920 might be the alternative you seek. Recently released on AT&T; Wireless, the Vu is one of LG's more attractive handsets at CES that isn't a wrist watch cellphone. More »

CES 2009: LG Invision CB630

January 10, 2009 - Admittedly, the hottest cellphone at LG's CES booth was not much of a phone at all. LG's revolutionary wristwatch phone (well, revolutionary if you've never read Dick Tracy comics) sucked up most of the oxygen in the booth. However, several feet away from the hottest phone/accessory at the show, LG had a solid collection of handsets on display, including the Invision CB630. More »

CES 2009: Moto's Green Cellphone

January 10, 2009 - At his keynote address, Sony CEO Howard Stringer stressed the need to "go green" as one of his seven imperatives for the consumer electronics industry. Stringer's advice is hardly trailblazing in a post-$4-a-gallon America, but it's still encouraging to see so many electronics at CES designed with carbon reduction in mind. Motorola gets in on the green act with the Renew W223, a cellphone that has been certified carbon-free by the carbon offset group CarbonFund. More »
