In Other Weekend News...
Greetings people of the planet earth! Hope you're all having a nice weekend so far. Hrmmm? Anyone want to do the hardware review roundup? I've got about 5 gazillion hardware emails sitting here. Stupid hardware. Speaking of hardware and such... I'm reviewing a set of Able Planet True Fidelity Headphones. Think the company will mind if I use words like "thingy" and "stuff"? Oh that reminds me of something...

Yesterday I say to Andrew "Oh noes, these headphones are lefties.", and he's like "WTF are you talking about?" (but like in British so it's more like "Hold on while I make a spot of tea, alright, now what is it that you are talking about?")... Anyhoo, I proceed to tell him that I always wear the mic on the right, but that these Able Planet 'phones are lefties. So he's all like, "darn, need more tea to answer this one... all mics are on the left, do you mean to tell me that you've been wearing your headsets backwards all these years?" /Shrug. I'm sure there are headsets out there that go both ways, right?

Question of the Day: Do you put it on the left or the right?

On this day...

2005: Walmart begins offering an exclusive version of Ultima Online (UO), Ultima Online: Gold, which included the content of Ultima Online: Samurai Empire with additional content, an Advanced Character token code, and a quick-start manual.

2006: THQ released the adventure game Monster House based on the film of the same name for the PlayStation 2 in the U.S. Though the game is marketed towards a pre-teen audience, many critics noted how similar its gameplay was to Residential Evil 4.

APB Costs Total $30 Million; Unique Subscription Methods Touted
- 17 Comments
Regardless of whether APB is an MMO or not, boss David Jones reveals that players will pay 'something' beyond the initial purchase to allow Realtime Worlds to recoup their $30 million investment:

“It’s not just a game any more,” said Jones. “We’ve got data centres, we’ve got all the hardware. But if you wrap it all up, it’s probably a good $30 million investment.”

“Basically, you have to buy the client. It’s a traditional game that you buy,” he said.

“We’re not going the normal ‘you have to subscribe to play the game every month’ route. What we haven’t said is which route we are going, and in some respects we’re still looking.”

Jones said the eventually model will be “flexible,” “unique” and interesting, and will allow the player to “get” why they have to spend money to cover Realtime Worlds’ investment.

Warner Bros. Complete Midway Purchase
Originally touted as a $33 million purchase, Midway's debts pushed the final price for Warner Bros. up to a cool $49 mill. With the deal done, sixty staff, including boss Booty, have been laid off at Midway's headquarters, and Ed Boon tasked with creating an ultra-violent Mortal Kombat that'll hopefully revitalise the ailing franchise.

As previously mentioned, Midway Newcastle was closed, while Midway San Diego continues to hunt for a buyer before its August 31st shutdown deadline.

Zeno Clash 2 Aims High
Somewhat worryingly, ACE Team, who said they were done with 'big' games, have revealed that they're aiming for the sky for the Zeno Clash sequel:

Whereas Zeno Clash was a relatively short and linear experience, ACE Team are looking to create a more expansive experience for the sequel. “[It’s] what we would have liked to do in Zeno Clash if we would have had the resources,” said Bordeu. “We really think that an open ended world is fit for the world of Zenozoik. Many games offer you the possibility to roam around freely, which is a great feature. But when you travel through those worlds many have very familiar and recognizable environments. In Zeno Clash the woods don’t look like a regular forest with green trees and bushes.”

“In Zeno Clash the cities are just plain insane. I think it will be extremely entertaining to explore a world where you a never quite sure what you will encounter next.”

So not only is the world of Zeno Clash expanding, but ACE Team’s ambitions as developers too. Not content to remain modest, digitally distributed indie devs, the studio are hoping to bring Zeno Clash 2 to retail to consoles as well as PC. According to Bordeu, “The sequel will be developed from a different perspective than the first title. Zeno Clash is a short indie game, whereas with Zeno Clash 2 we want to build a larger title; a game that’s big enough to go retail on the consoles.”

A more refined, similar experience would be my preference for the sequel. Far too many indie games get ruined by ridiculous ambition. Hell, look at White Gold...

Valve Teasing TF2 King of the Hill Mode?
Examiner follows the continuing drama as Valve seemingly hints to a new game mode for Team Fortress 2. In addition to talking about the next character to receive a class update, Valve made references to hill defense. So here's a look at the evidence so far.

TF2 Official Blog mentions youth of today "too much time inventing nonsense words, not enough time taking a bullet in the lung defending a hill." Followed up by a list of things REAL men should be engaged in at all times:

1. Getting a haircut
2. Yelling
3. Digesting ribs
4. Hill defense

In the Steam Forum one user, while working on a map, spots "King of the Hill" as an available game type.

King of the Hill, good times indeed!

The turn-based strategy title allows you to play any of the "minor countries", as well as fully modelled land, air and naval combat, research, production and logistics. If you already own "Road to Victory" then you can update to "Time of Wrath" for free.

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said “WW2: Road to Victory has enjoyed a strong and positive community response, so we’re very happy to see this exciting new game system progress. WW2: Time of Wrath is a massive improvement over its predecessor and anyone who was interested in Road to Victory should definitely check Time of Wrath! In cooperation with Wastelands Interactive, we’re also pleased to offer WW2: Time of Wrath as a free upgrade to WW2: Road to Victory owners as a thank you to them for supporting this series.”

From the front lines in France and Russia to the deserts of North Africa and the airfields and convoys of Britain, the campaigns of World War II are yours to command in WW2: Time of Wrath! This turn-based grand strategy title, the highly improved and expanded sequel to WW2: Road to Victory, puts the player in charge of the political, economic and military decisions of one or more Axis or Allied nations, including minor nations. A diplomacy system based on political points allows you to sway possible allies to your side. An upgraded and expanded naval combat system includes fleet engagements, combat patrols, massive aircraft carriers, elusive raiders and U-Boats as well as a convoy system.

Eurogamer vs. Darkfall: Round 2
Remember when Eurogamer reviewed Aventurine's Darkfall, gave the game a final score of 2/10, and Aventurine cried foul? Yup, those were good times. Aventurine went as far as to check their logs to find that the Eurogamer reviewer had only played a couple of hours, and most of that time spent on the character creation screen. The reviewer claimed differently. Eurogamer stood by their man, and offered to re-review the game, Aventurine said stuff it up your arses.

Now that we're done with the history lesson, Eurogamer is back to take a second look at Darkfall. After much mucking about the reviewer finally gets down to the meat 'n potatoes of the four page article, giving the game a final score of 4/10. An improvement over the original review, but still pointing to some suck.

Red Faction: Guerrilla - Demons Of The Badlands DLC Gameplay Movies
- 1 Comment
According to IGN's new Demons Of The Badlands preview, the premium Red Faction: Guerrilla downloadable content should also be coming to the PC:

The new missions are good fun and extend the Red Faction flavour seamlessly, with the highlight being blasting waves of EDF vehicles with a plasma cannon perched high up in a guard tower. As well as the missions there are eight new side missions (Guerrilla Activities) to get stuck into and it's within these that Volition has poured most of its creativity into. The new Demolitions Master challenges see you doing insane stuff like using gas bottles as explosive dominoes to chain buildings together and strapping a remote mine to the back of a car so you can speed towards a cliff, dive out of the car and detonate the mine in mid-air to send the car flying across the gap and into a building on the far side. Sensational stuff.

In 1970 Ralph Baer first demonstrated his revolutionary television-based video game system to electronics manufacturer Magnavox. The company will ultimately negotiate an exclusive license with Baer to manufacture and distribute the system as the Magnavox Odyssey, which will go down in history as the world's first video game console.

Videogame Factoidals

  • In Kakiriko village in Zelda: A link to the past (SNES) a portrait of Mario appears on a wall inside a house.
  • Sonic the hedgehog is not only a fast hedgehog in a video game. Sonic Hedgehog is also a name of a gene on chromosome 7 of a human genome.
  • In GTA San Andreas, KDST radio host is performed by former Guns 'n' Roses stage clown Axl Rose. He was paid in electricity vouchers.
  • It's only humanly possible to press a button on a controller 16 times per second. This record was set by Toshuyuki Takahashi, a Japanese gamer.
  • Super Mario World for the SNES took 29,000 hours to program.
