Errors & Omissions: Rhythmic writing and the grammatical flourish
On Boxing Day morning, you don't want this column's usual nit-picking about things that went wrong in the past week's issues of the paper. So this week we change into festive attire and offer instead a celebration of some particular felicities.
Inside Corrections
Errors & Omissions: All this talk of 'tackling' belongs on the sports pages
Saturday, 19 December 2009
There are quite enough people around who believe, quite erroneously, that the law does not allow householders to use force against burglars. We do not need headlines like this one, which appeared on Tuesday: "Homeowner jailed for tackling burglar."
Lloyd Blankfein
Friday, 18 December 2009
A review of John Cassidy's book How Markets Fail on 27 November listed the huge salaries and wealth of some of the chief executives of the big Wall Street banks, adding: "All lost their jobs – and fortunes – spectacularly when the crash came." One of them didn't: Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of Goldman Sachs, has retained both his job and (most of) his fortune. Our apologies to him.

Primark
Thursday, 17 December 2009
In our article, 'Primark faces new claims that it uses sweatshop labour', (4 December 2009), we stated that in 2005 Primark was named by 'Ethical Consumer' magazine as the least ethical clothing company. The magazine subsequently retracted this and stated that Primark was in the top 15 per cent of its table of rankings. The Independent is happy to set the record straight.
Andy Burnham
Wednesday, 16 December 2009
In the IoS Diary last week we said that Andy Burnham hadn't been to visit Stafford hospital since he took over as Health Secretary in June. But in fact he visited Stafford hospital on July 21st . We apologise to him for our error.
David Gest
Monday, 14 December 2009
An article in last Friday's paper suggested that during their divorce David Gest had alleged his then wife, Liza Minelli, had given him herpes. We have been asked to make it clear, which we are happy to do, that Mr Gest did not make such an allegation against Ms Minnelli and that he has never had that disease. We sincerely apologise to Mr Gest for any embarrassment and distress caused.'

'Darling must find an extra £2,400 per family'
Thursday, 10 December 2009
Chancellor Alistair Darling will have to find an extra £76 billion, or £2,400 per family, to restore the public finances over two Parliaments of pain, experts warned today.
David Aaronovitch
Thursday, 10 December 2009
In an item in last Sunday's The Feral Beast column, we wrongly stated that David Aaronovitch was a member of the Hasbara committee, an organisation that seeks to promote Israel's reputation. In fact, he is not connected to Hasbara at all. We now understand that the Hasbara website describes individuals as a "Hasbara author" merely because Hasbara themselves have referred to these individuals' work on their site, and the authors may have no knowledge of this or connection to Hasbara, as was the case here. We apologise to David for our error.

Saturday, 5 December 2009
The tricky word et turns up in several familiar Latin tags. People know that it means "and", but forget that it also means "even".
