Russia's Maria Sharapova (left) shows her frustration during her 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 defeat by compatriot Maria Kirilenko in the Australian Open yesterday

'Bad day' as Sharapova loses to Russian rival

Maria Kirilenko and her boyfriend, Igor Andreev, refused to look on the bleak side after the singles draw for the Australian Open was made here last week. "He had Roger Federer and I had Maria Sharapova," Kirilenko said yesterday. "Before the matches he said we could start the year loudly. Well, I've already started the year loudly, I think. Now it's his turn."

Roger Federer
From the epic heights of last year, Federer's form has dipped of late. The Swiss has not won any of the last five tournaments he entered - an unusual occurrence for Federer. He is consequently not as clear-cut favourite going into the Open as he would have been six months ago. Yet you can never write off the 15-time Grand Slam winner. His first test will probably be Davydenko in the quarter finals. The Russian has beaten Federer in their last two matches. If he passes through that unscathed, he can go all the way.
