Inside Lines: Blow for England as Russia take the Roman road to 2018

Sunday, 7 March 2010

Just when it seemed England had steadied the ship, the Russian government have launched a torpedo into the turbulent waters of the 2018 World Cup by inviting Roman Abramovich to throw his weight, and considerable wealth, behind their attempt to play hosts. It is an offer the Chelsea owner is unlikely to refuse, especially as prime minister Vladimir Putin will also be putting himself about on the bidding scene, as he did so visibly in helping to clinch the next Winter Olympics for Sochi. This pair's involvement underlines the growing feeling that Russia are emerging as the most formidable threat to England, not least because both have the ear of Fifa boss Sepp Blatter, who is keen to take the World Cup into fresh territory. No Eastern European country has staged the competition and Blatter has twice hobnobbed with Russian leaders in Moscow recently when he was said to be "seeking an update" on their progress from Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, the man who has forced the resignation of Russia's Olympic chief following the nation's worst Winter Games since the collapse of the Soviet empire in 1991. Blatter has been named the most powerful figure in world sport by the Olympic website Around the Rings, and to get him on England's side it might need the Queen to flatter Blatter.

Outside Edge (07/03/10)

Congratulations to 'Blue Peter' presenter Helen Skelton on becoming the first woman to paddle the 2,010-mile trip down the Amazon in a kayak – having never been in one before. She also broke records for the longest solo journey in a kayak, and the furthest distance paddled by a woman in 24 hours (75 miles) – all in aid of Sport Relief. Meanwhile good luck to Medwyn Williams of Anglesey, 67, who will try to sail to the Isle of Man in a 1,600lb pumpkin, complete with outboard motor, to raise money for Help the Heroes. But he seems utterly sane next to Miles Daisher of Idaho, who has pioneered "skyaking", sky-diving in a kayak on to water at 50mph from 13,000ft. He's really up chute creek.

Roy Keane v Mick McCarthy
When Roy Keane falls out with someone, he leaves them in no doubt about what he thinks of them. Whether it was Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough or Alf Inge Haaland, Keane wasn't afraid to speak his mind. But he saved his most vitriolic anger for former Republic of Ireland boss and now Wolves manager Mick McCarthy. It started back in 2002 as preparations were being made for that year's World Cup. Keane was less than impressed with the training methods under McCarthy and told him so. When the pair tried to calm things down with some 'clear the air' talks, a slanging match ensued and McCarthy decided to send Keane home. "I cannot and will not tolerate being spoken to with that level of abuse being thrown at me so I sent him home," said McCarthy. He later accused the midfielder of being "obnoxious, degrading to me and downright rude". It was reported that Keane provided McCathy with some, shall we say, anatomically challenging instructions with what to do with the World Cup: "You can stick it up your bollocks." There was some talk of a return to the squad but the pair were unable to resolve their differences.

The ten best bitter sports feuds

Friday, 5 March 2010

There's nothing like a long running, highly charged (and often irrational) feud to stoke things up in the world of sport.

JOHN DALY

Two-time Major winner John Daly took the golfing world by storm when the weighing-scale-challenged golfer won the 1991 PGA Championship in his rookie season, having been the ninth and final alternate when Nick Price withdrew.

Over the following 18 years Daly has taken more than just the golfing world by storm. A life-long battle with alcoholism has marred his undoubted talents but also led to some explosive incidents on and off the fairways. He has recorded an autobiographical album titled My Life, featuring guest performances by Willie Nelson and Johnny Lee. And in 2007, he contributed background vocals for a track on Kid Rock's Rock And Roll Jesus album.

His lowpoints are too lengthy to chronicle in anything less than a weighty tome but his career appeared to reach its nadir last December when he was found passed out in a Hooters bar in Winston-Salem. Although, following lap-band surgery to shrink his stomach, Daly is now making a welcome return to the sport.
