In addition, all models of iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April. Beginning a week from today, on March 12, US customers can pre-order both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store or reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store. Prices start at $499.

“iPad is something completely new,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”

Starting at just $499, iPad lets users browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers battery life of up to 10 hours.*

iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ interface makes surfing the web an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. You can read and send email on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard or import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. iPad makes it easy to watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD, or flip through the pages of an ebook you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.

The App Store on iPad lets you wirelessly browse, buy and download new apps from the world's largest app store. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for iPad and will run almost all of the more than 150,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. Developers are already creating exciting new apps designed for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch interface, large screen and high-quality graphics.

The new iBooks app for iPad includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile product. The iBookstore will feature books from the New York Times Best Seller list from both major and independent publishers, including Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, Penguin Group and Simon & Schuster.

The iTunes® Store gives iPad users access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 12 million songs, over 55,000 TV episodes and over 8,500 films including over 2,500 in stunning high definition. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

Anyway, QuakeCon 2010 will take place at Hilton Anatole Hotel - Dallas, Texas, and like past QuakeCon events, is free to all! More details will be revealed in the next few weeks.

This week's gift to the Star Wars: The Old Republic community is a new developer blog called Finding The Balance in the Force, from BioWare Writer Joanna Berry. In the new dev blog, she talks about writing the Jedi Consular.

As a Jedi Consular, your journey begins among the ruins and forests of Tython, still full of dangers and secrets after so many centuries. But the business of the Jedi Order is never confined to one world. You may find yourself inching through ancient ruins seeking proof of lost cultures, discovering and mastering forgotten Force techniques, planning an assault on an enemy base with Republic armies waiting on your unique insights, or even representing your order to a strange alien culture, whose first question is: “What’s a Jedi?”
Free Realms Weighs In At 9 Million And Counting
- 2 Comments
SOE waxes on about the latest Free Realms numbers, which have recently surpassed nine million registered players. The casual free-to-play MMO recently added mounts, and new pets will also be on offer soon.

“With Free Realms, we’ve been able to reflect the needs and wants of our players by keenly listening to their suggestions and feedback,” said John Smedley, president of SOE. “We believe the persistent exercise of capturing in-game research inside Free Realms has been a huge contributing factor as to why we’ve attracted over nine million players in less than a year. It truly helps us give our players a game where they can do and be whatever they want.”

Continuous development of new features and themed in-game events, as well as persistent marketing support, has drawn a constant influx of new players into the free-to-play virtual world. An example of a customer-requested feature recently introduced in Free Realms is Rides.

Atari's Star Trek Online Indecisive Shenanigans Detailed
- 31 Comments
A Star Trek Online forum member has neatly detailed some of the recent strangeness going on in camp Atari / Cryptic as of late. It all started ... cue wavy lines for some "he said, she said"...

At the end of February Atari began to promote a Star Trek Online sale, 10% off the game + 60 days free play time on top of the regular 30 day subscription included with the game = 90 free gameplay. Some people were well pissed with this promotion and a protest thread was started. A forum administrator stickied the protest thread and said the angry mob would get a response.

The Atari Star Trek Online storefront page is changed, the game remains at 10% off but the 60 days of free play time is removed. Cryptic customer service claims that at no time was there an additional 60 days of free play time (I personally saw the Atari promo page showing the 60 day play time offer). Some of the more vocal STO forum members are banned, and the stickied forum admin thread is un-stickied and locked.

Another bit of strangeness detailed in the post is claims that Atari was giving refunds on Star Trek Online lifetime subscriptions up until February 28th, even though the sales agreement states that lifetime subs are non-refundable. /Shrug, I don't get that one.

Anyway, the thread has been closed now. The fun is over. Or is it? ... cue spooky music ...

Nvidia 196.75 GPU Drivers Bugged, Causing Fans To Fail, Cards To Overheat
- 46 Comments
A rather serious bug has been discovered in the recently released Nvidia 196.75 GPU drivers. So serious in fact, that it could cause your graphics card to be permanently damaged. As such, I'll put the warning in bold: downgrade immediately to the 196.21 drivers unless you want your GPU fans to slow to a crawl or stop altogether, causing your shiny, expensive video card to overheat and possibly suffer a permanent hardware failure.

Here's Nvidia's official statement, along with an extra warning from Blizzard:

We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.com. Until we can verify and root cause this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our Web site in the meantime.

-Nvidia PR

We're getting reports where users are getting intermittent low FPS after installing these drivers. It seems that it is related to the fan control included in these drivers not working correctly and is causing the video card to overheat on 3D applications. This will affect Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2 Beta. Please uninstall the drivers and revert back to the older ones.

Sony Patents Degradable Game Demos
Sony's registered an interesting patent that causes demos to degrade over time, hopefully enticing users to buy the full game:

A patent filed by SCEA details a system that gives users a full or nearly complete game to play with, but slowly removes features until you buy it.

The software has customizable triggers that disable features after a set number of plays or lapsed play time. Let’s see some theoretical examples of how this could work.

In one scenario your weapon is weakened or replaced with a less powerful one after so many hours playing the game. Think of it as a timed level down.

Reminds me of Codemasters' FADE copy protection that would eventually turn you into a seagull in Operation Flashpoint.

TGIF! I was trying to play Supreme Commander 2 yesterday, but I couldn't get the game started. It said "click anywhere to start", so I started clicking on things but nothing happened. Speaking of SupCom 2, watch for our first video review, coming like... probably Monday or something. If I can find some information on this "click anywhere to start" bug. FYI, dogs don't like to be clicked on.

^ Joke of the epic fail variety, never mind.

What are your weekend plans?

  • 23% of all photocopier faults worldwide are caused by people sitting on them and photocopying their butts.
  • 40% of women have hurled footwear at a man. (Hrmm, oddly enough I've done that)
  • Club Direct, a travel insurance company in Britain, provides insurance plans for protection from falling coconuts.
  • Each year, there are more than 40,000 toilet related injuries in the United States.
  • Kampang School in northeastern Thailand is the first school to open a toilet for transvestite pupils.

Ubisoft Announces Pure Futbol
Ubisoft announces a stupidly named football (soccer) game, coming this May to PCs and consoles:

Today, Ubisoft announced Pure Futbol, an entirely new sports brand that is being developed by Ubisoft Vancouver. The game will be available worldwide in May 2010.

Pure Futbol is a new and unique vision of soccer video games, emphasizing the intense, physical and spectacular aspects of the sport. The over-the-shoulder camera and visceral audio dynamically react to the context of the match, placing the gamer in the heart of the five-a-side soccer action, as opposed to the feeling of watching a TV broadcast.

Pure Futbol will include 230 elite soccer players, 17 international teams, and 17 legendary players. Gamers will have the opportunity to create their own customized athlete who can progress through the campaign mode to ultimately test themselves against the world’s best players in the final tournament. Up to four people can play multiplayer locally and 1vs1 matches are supported online, along with the inclusion of leaderboards that allow players to match up to one another and celebrate the pure competitive nature of soccer.
