Red Faction: Armageddon Screenshots, Trailer & Announcement
- 5 Comments
You're the grandson of Red Faction: Guerrilla protagonist Alex Mason, a catastrophe has befallen Mars, humanity is pushed deep underground, but below the surface aliens also lurk:

Half a century after the Red Faction resistance and their Marauder allies freed Mars from the brutal Earth Defense Force, harmony on Mars is again threatened but this time by a lethal force shrouded in mystery.

When the massive Terraformer that supplies Mars with its Earth-like air and weather is destroyed, the atmosphere turns to chaos, super-tornados and lightning storms engulf the planet. To survive, the Colonists flee to the underground mines and build a network of habitable caves.

Five years later, Darius Mason, grandson of Martian Revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya, runs a lucrative business from Bastion, underground hub of Colonist activity. Mining, scavenging, mercenary work--if the job is dangerous, Darius is your man. Few sane people now venture to the ravaged surface, aside from contractors like Darius and the smugglers who run goods between the settlements.

When Darius is tricked into reopening a mysterious shaft in an old Marauder temple, he releases a long-dormant evil and unleashes Armageddon on Mars. As Colonist and Marauder settlements are torn asunder, only Darius and the Red Faction can save mankind. The battle will take them across the storm-blasted planet... and below it, to the very heart of the unspeakable threat.

Features:

  • Hell on Mars - Darius Mason can only watch as the surface of Mars is destroyed. Seeking solace underground, an even greater threat emerges against humanity.
  • Nano Forge - Unleash the devastating force of the Nano Forge with concussive blasts, core-shattering tremblers, and bone-crushing rhino charges.
  • Extermination Mode - Four players can team up online to battle back the relentless tide of attackers as the mysteries of the ancient threat continue to unfold.
  • Full Destruction - Tear down separatist outposts, rip apart alien monoliths, and reconstruct colonist defenses with Geo Mod 2.0, the most advanced real-time destruction engine to date.
  • Fight for Survival - Free colonists from alien cocoons, reclaim cultist fortifications on the surface, and hunt for artifacts deep within alien hives to create unthinkable advanced weaponry.
  • A hi-def, high quality version of the video will be uploaded when available.

The final set of BlizzCon tickets will go on sale in four and a half hours, and with no changes to the selling procedure it will likely be as frustrating as the first round, which saw people hammering F5 at the exact second sales began, but still being 14,000th in line with no hope of buy one of the limited $150 tickets.

Blizzard is also receiving flak for selling five tickets to each person, which only helps fuel the eBay market, where tickets are sold for ridiculously inflated sums.

Sony & Square Enix Sued Over Final Fantasy XIII Freezing
    - 12 Comments
A disgruntled fellow has decided to sue Sony and Square Enix for $5 million after Final Fantasy XIII froze and supposedly damaged his Playstation 3:

The lawsuit, filed on June 2, 2010 by Daniel Wolf of San Diego, Calif., alleges Final Fantasy XIII has caused "severe and widespread damage" to Sony PS3 gaming systems since its release on March 9, 2010. The lawsuit states that, for many consumers playing Final Fantasy XIII, has "caused their PS3 consoles to freeze and become totally and permanently inoperable." Wolf said he purchased a copy of Final Fantasy XIII the day it was released, and when attempting to save his game, his PS3 became unresponsive and would no longer play any other media after restarting it.

"Both Defendants are eminently aware of the damage being cause by their defective products, and have chosen to do nothing about it," the lawsuit says.

The suit also alleges that both Sony and Square Enix blamed the issue on one another. Square Enix said the issue resulted from Sony's console, and Sony blamed the issue on a faulty Final Fantasy XIII game disc. Neither company allegedly offered to cover the cost of repairing PS3 consoles.

We'd be billionaires if you could sue a corporation every time a PC game crashed or froze Windows...

    In Other News...

Of late I've noticed a fair few complaints about our lack of weekend news. This is not, for the most part, because of our laziness, but because there's little to nothing to post in the run up to E3. We're constantly looking for stuff to post, but neither of us will just post random shit and stupid interviews asking how many f'ing guns are in a game. Nor will we dredge the murky cack-filled interwebs for trivial updates about less than spectacular console games. And we certainly won't post ridiculous rumour stories from sites unable to do even the most basic research.

I'd like to think that Voodoo Extreme is above the pageview whoring tabloid antics that many sites turn to nowadays and I also wish to retain the PC focus. Yes we dip into console territory, but typically only for the biggest of games and those that are coming to the PC, or have a chance of coming to the PC. It sounds horribly arrogant, but we know stuff most others don't and therefore there's a reason we'll post certain items.

On the other hand, Jube will keep doing The Sims just to screw with you.

Alganon Developer Counter Sues Former President
    - 5 Comments
The legal tussling over MMOG Alaganon continues with the counter suing of ousted Quest Online Founder and President, Dave Allen. As you would expect, old chum Derek Smart couldn't help but add to the new drama with an epicly long bitch fest, available to read here.

In early March of this year, Quest Online officially announced the hiring of industry veteran Derek Smart to head the company as President Pro Tempore and to lead the Alganon team toward the completion of the game.

Allen was subsequently removed from his position as independent contractor (a position for which he received a generous monthly fee since the formation of the company) to the company. Shortly after, in two unanimous votes by the members and investors, Allen was later removed first as a Managing Member and later as a Voting Member of the LLC, thus leaving Gregory Wexler (also an investor and co-founder of the company) as the sole Managing Member.

In response to the above actions, this past March, Allen filed what the LLC members, partners and investors believe to be a frivolous lawsuit (Case # CV2010-010391) in Arizona against Quest Online, 3000AD and several other parties.

Alganon, the company's flagship product, is a game that the investors had originally invested almost $4M to develop and which ended up being released in an incomplete and exceptionally faulty state in December 2009 under Allen's leadership. That action resulted in the game and company generating a lot of bad press for the company as well as the game.

Since appointing Smart as President Pro Tempore of QOL, Smart has helped the company obtain new funding, reduce overhead, streamline operations, revitalized the team's efforts and focus as well as - through transparency - provided the investors with renewed confidence in the company and indeed their investment. In addition, Smart led the team to the successful completion and release of the Alganon game in late April.

Smart also put into effect a plan that saw the company refund back to gamers 100% of the thousands of dollars in paid subscriptions which were bought in good faith prior to the game's fateful December 2009 launch.

In recognition of Smart's efforts and leadership, the investors and owners of the company recently voted him in as one of two Managers of the LLC. This appointment further establishes Smart as the President of Quest Online going forward.

As to Allen's lawsuit, all parties involved have now filed responses to same and an extensive counter-suit (Case # CV2010-010391) has also been filed against him in the Maricopa County Court in Arizona.

The complete counter-complaint can be read here.

    Balancing The StarCraft II Beta
An enlightening interview over at Gamasutra questions Blizzard's Ben Browder to discover how he balances StarCraft II:

Having been in beta for a couple months, I would imagine the amount of balance and design data you have to work with has skyrocketed.

It's pretty high. We can learn a lot. The danger with a lot of this data is that you have to be very careful how you use it. With unit stats, I can tell you that, for example, in a Protoss versus Terran game, 12 percent of the time the Protoss build carriers. And when they build carriers, they win 70 percent of the time. You could say, "That must mean carriers are overpowered!"

That's not really true, though. It could just be that as you get towards the end of the game, if the Protoss have the extra resources to waste on a bunch of carriers, they're probably going to win anyway.

In other words, if your opponent hasn't managed to stop you being able to build 24 carriers...

Right. Of course, it doesn't mean the carriers aren't overpowered either. That stat alone actually tells you nothing. It's a very dangerous stat. If you listen to that stat, you can make all kinds of mistakes. The real challenge for us is to continue to sort the wheat from the chaff, to determine which stats are real, which stats are meaningful, and which ones we should be looking at to make a meaningful change.

So you get that empirical data based on stat tracking, you get feedback from the beta forums, and then you get the high-level meta-game that exists largely in the minds and strategic evolution of experienced players.

Yup. And our personal play experience, which is probably the most important. We take from whichever one is providing the correct information.

If we look at the stats and we say, "This doesn't actually back anything we're experiencing online," I'm very suspicious of that number. We get information from a lot of different sources, and then we use the other sources to refute or corroborate. We look at another source and say, "You know what? What they're saying online matches my play experience, and it matches the stats. This seems real. Let's talk about what some possible fixes can be."

On the other hand, "You know, what they're saying online does not match my play experience and it does not match the stats. Let's put this on a watch list, and if we see more information that can prove it to us, we'll make a fix. If we don't, maybe it will go away and was never real."

Men Of War: Assault Squad Screenshots, Interview & Preview
    - 2 Comments
Strategy Informer's got a big old Men Of War: Assault Squad scoop. Built entirely around multiplayer co-op, the standalone title expands on the exquisite co-op battles in the original title that were cruelly missing from the disappointing Red Tide expansion. To find out more, hit up Strategy Informer's hands-on preview and interview, a snippet of which is shown below:

What was the underlying principle behind Assault Squads? What are you hoping to achieve with it?

Well, we saw that the community mainly was interested in multiplayer and we see a lot of co-op based games that create a lot of fun for gamers and are really popular, so we wanted to create something similar for our RTS where instead of playing competitively you can play together with a bunch of friends. I mean you can set up a game but eventually it just gets boring as there are some players who are better than others, and so the outcome is always the same.

With Assault Squad, we're taking the co-op that was available in Men of War to the next level: people can now play together against the AI through fifteen different missions, that are all challenging. They're all roughly at the same skill-level, but the player can actually decide how difficult they want it to be. In the original campaign, only the last couple of missions are really interesting, with the early missions acting more like a tutorial. We wanted to address this and bring in a more competitive and streamlined online gameplay experience.

Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock Trailer & Announcement
    - 5 Comments
The sixty billionth Guitar Hero includes a story mode as its big new feature - helping set the scene is this rather weird trailer:

This autumn, living room legends and their friends will join together and embark on an epic rock journey to save rock n’ roll with Activision Publishing, Inc.’s Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. The latest installment in the world’s most popular music game series, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock will once again redefine music gaming with an all-new, story-driven Quest Mode, a completely redesigned rock-inspired guitar controller, the biggest on-disc selection of rock music ever in a Guitar Hero game and Quickplay+, which invites challenge-starved fanatics to test their rock skills in any of the on-disc or over 500 songs in the Guitar Hero Music Library.

Running on the powerful Guitar Hero engine that has been expanded and refined, coupled with the return of the critically acclaimed and fan favourite features like Party Play’s jump in/jump out gameplay, a host of Competitive modes and the ability to play any combination of guitar, bass, drums and vocals, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock offers the complete interactive and connected experience bringing friends and foes to the stage in the ultimate rock music adventure.

In Quest Mode, using any combination of instruments, players will embark on a larger-than-life, epic rock journey from the stage of CBGBs, the infamous punk-rock club in New York City, to the molten lava fields of rock treachery as eight Guitar Hero characters transform into rock warriors that must join together to use their unique, game-changing powers to help the Demi-God of Rock take down “The Beast” and save rock n’ roll.

"The world is a boring place. Come with me, and enter a world populated of Demi-Gods and Beasts. Transform from an everyday person and become the savior of rock and roll,” said Gene Simmons of KISS. “It was an honour and privilege to narrate Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, even more so, to voice the Demi God. From the God of Thunder to the Demi-God, how cool is that..."

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock breathes new life into gamers’ current Guitar Hero music libraries providing literally hundreds of hours of replayability with the introduction of Quickplay+, which features 13 totally unique gameplay challenges for every on-disc track as well as most downloadable and importable songs from Guitar Hero World Tour forward. Gamers will complete challenges such as Band Streak, High Score and Power Challenge, which allows players to choose any two warrior powers they have unlocked to try and earn ridiculously high scores, to rank up and unlock more rewards and content than ever before. All-new Challenge Leaderboards have been created in order to capture the outrageous scores that are capable with Quickplay+.

Delivering the largest on-disc rock music set list to-date, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock features more than 90 tracks that include guitar shredding hits from bands such as Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Slipknot and larger than life anthems from Queen, Muse and KISS. Additionally, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth wrote and recorded “Sudden Death,” an original track for the game, which was inspired by Quest Mode’s storyline. Along with original songs, the set list also includes special re-records by famous artists and tracks from bands that are making their music video game debut. The first songs off of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’s set list to be revealed are:

  • AFI – “Dancing Through Sunday”
  • Anthrax – “Indians”
  • Avenged Sevenfold – “Bat Country”

Digital Distribution and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “We are focused on expanding our game franchises onto new digital platforms to maximize quality experiences for gamers worldwide and LOTRO’s new model is a great leading example of this.”

Extending free-to-play to LOTRO will offer another premium game to a broad spectrum of fans.”

“Having successfully taken two titles free-to-play in the past we are very pleased to be doing the same with The Lord of the Rings Online in Europe,” said David Solari, Vice President and General Manager of Codemasters Online. “It’s a fantastic, award-winning game with a wonderfully realized world and this step will only broaden its appeal and increase its player base.”

Final Fantasy XI Servers Breached, Accounts Compromised
    - 0 Comments
Square Enix has contacted every Final Fantasy XI player, past and present, to warn them of a breach on their account servers. Credit card details are safe, but passwords and accounts may be compromised, so if you have a PlayOnline ID please change your password immediately. Unfortunately, and somewhat stupidly, you have to contact a support staffer in real-time to obtain a new one...

Dear valued Final Fantasy XI player:

Square Enix is committed to protecting your user information. We have just been alerted to a potential breach of Square Enix’s secure systems from an external source. This may have resulted in the disclosure of a limited number of PlayOnline IDs, passwords and user account data. Please be assured that your credit card data has not been compromised. We are taking this matter very seriously and are conducting a full investigation.

As a precaution we are notifying you of this potential breach and we are resetting your PlayOnline password.

Please contact our Support Center by web chat (Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri 9:00AM to 6:00PM) and obtain a new password that differs from your prior password. Please keep this new password safe and always be on the alert for any “phishing” emails that ask you to disclose personal or financial information.

This week only, the Support Center will handle calls for this issue on Saturday June 5, and Sunday June 6. Please note that due to a large number of calls, it may take a long time until your call is handled. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Trent Reznor Unlikely To Score Doom 4
Having abandoned his work on Doom 3's score due to "time, money and bad management," it was unlikely that Trent Reznor would return to work on Doom 4. Last night, Trent confirmed that suspicion on his How To Destroy Angels tumblr question and answer page:

Whats going on with id software and you? Are you working on Doom 4 or was it just a false rumor?

I haven’t been contacted by them and find it unlikely that I would have time at this point.

Doom 4 has no release date and there has been no official media released. It is still being developed, however.
