Chelsea’s 165-match ‘bounce-backability’ record
Chelsea head into Saturday’s game at Birmingham on the back of last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat to Sunderland but with an astonishing “bounce back” record to their name.

Why West Ham are averse to visiting Liverpool
West Ham rest at the foot of the Premier League table, glancing nervously upwards.
They catch sight of their next hurdle. Oh no. Surely not. Of all the places they don’t want to go on Saturday at tea-time it’s Anfield. And where are they going? Yes indeedy; red peril ahead.
Any ground would pose problems [...]

Manzine: A truly independent publication
Times are hard for those of us who work on newspapers. Budgets are down, salaries are stagnant, we’re being worked to the point of exploitation and all for what? The odd freebie, the glory of seeing your name at the top of a piece, and the joy of being caught in the corridor by your boss while you plan a prank for a photo about another publication that you write for.

This season’s Premier League surprise packages
My surprise packages so far this season are: Bolton in fifth place under the impressive Owen Coyle; Sunderland in 6th not long after Steve Bruce was apologising for that huge defeat at Newcastle; Liverpool down in 11th spot still a recent improvement after being in bottom three!) and the form of promoted clubs Newcastle (8th), West Brom(12th) and Blackpool (15th).

Portrait of a Blairite Ultra
Norman Geras has a profile of me on his otherwise consistently brilliant normblog, to which, in the interests of self-promotion, I feel bound to draw your attention.
(The picture is of William “The Refrigerator” Perry, one of my sporting heroes.)

Military decision-making: the Afghan case study
Terrific long article about policy-making on Afghanistan in next month’s Prospect, by Matt Cavanagh, who was special adviser to Des Browne, Defence Secretary, 2006-7, and to Gordon Brown 2007-10. It is subscription only, so pay up. It takes the form of a book review of Obama’s Wars, by Bob Woodward, but offers a comparative analysis of policy-making in the US and the UK.

This’ll Warm Your Cockles
It’s so easy, too easy to moan about anything and everything… part of the British disposition and I have to give it to us, we’re damn good at making a fuss.
