Acceleration takes power. Maintaining steady speed on a fairly straight, fairly flat road can be done with much less power.
However, high speeds aren't great for economy.
There's a speed limit on electric motors. At very high rpm they start to work like generators. The Tesla Roadster was going to have a 2-speed transmission, but it was decided that range and speed were sufficient without the complexity.

From the lucky-ass bastard (I hasse Diiig usem tüüfschte Härz :-) ) who gets Swiss ModelS Nr. 2, I know that delivery will be in March/April.
My next car definitely will be electric and I want it to be a Tesla, but there is one thing concerning me. What if my Tesla breaks down? I can't go to any of the 5'200 garages in Switzerland to have my Tesla fixed. There is only one place I know and that's Pelikanstrasse in Zurich. I live over 200 kilometers away from Zurich.
I cannot have my future car towed to Zurich for every booboo it will have. Are you feeling my pain? How are you planning on relieving this? Do you have contractor garages? Daimler Chrysler has a big monetary investment in Tesla. Will they maybe expand their garage knowledge to electric to accommodate repair and maintenance service?

That's right Garrett, it's a luxury performance model not a budget run-around, Taylor. It's a great way for Tesla to enter the market making some noise, and getting noticed.
For the ideals of the electric car, I think this will be a much more effective method in the long run, to start luxury then work down. This makes the cause much more noticeable.
