Ra Mason

Ra Mason is a lecturer in Asia-Pacific Studies at the University of Central Lancashire in England. He was born in Devon in 1977 and first came to Japan in 1995 after leaving school at the age of 14. He returned to full-time education in 1998 and completed his double degree Ph.D. in East Asian Studies at the University of Tohoku and the University of Sheffield in 2012.

In this sense, one of the clearest issues highlighted by Fukushima was that risks, supposedly scientifically calculable, are actually mostly open to interpretation and manipulation, particularly in terms of how they are articulated by different actors with different agendas. How this is then transmitted to the public becomes all the more pivotal. Certain issues, such as nuclear leakages, highlight this very clearly because people cannot be sure about the risks they face, so an almost allergic reaction is witnessed.
