Isla de Gigantes--Newest Hidden Paradise in the Philippines

Islas de Gigantes – also known as Higantes Group of islands that are located 12 kilometers east of the town of Estancia but considered as a part of the town of Carles, Iloilo. The Gigantes Islands used to be known as Sabuluag or Salauag after an endemic tree species found in the islands. But as for its modern name “Gigantes”, there are varying versions as to why this came to be. The most common element among all these stories is that during the Spanish colonial era, some caves were were explored in the islands and there, some coffins were discovered which supposedly contained enormous human remains. And since this happened during Spanish times, the Spanish word gigante (giant) came to be applied to the islands.

There are many exotic white sand beaches and tourists attractions around the islands. My personal recommendation is Antonia, Bantigue Sand Bar Cabugao Gamay and of course the famous Tanke Salt Water Lagoon. Don't leave the island without visiting these places. Electricity is only from 3pm-11pm where residents are only using local generators.

And of course if you have the sense of adventure like Indiana Jones, you can visit Lungon-Lungon Cave and Bakwitan Cave where those 8 foot pre-Hispanic coffins and burial jars were found. Even today, human remains and broken burial jars can still be found in these caves. But there are other caves in the islands that has yet to be explored.

Just expect when you get there, a few typical beach resorts and inns. Also home stay is available to cater to local and foreign tourists. Fresh sea foods, especially scallops is always available in the menu.
