In Canada, a judge stepped down after explicit pictures, taken by her attorney husband and shared through e-mail without her knowledge, surfaced online on a porn website.

In addition, there are many cases when a person’s photo has been stolen or saved and used by another to create a fictitious online identity-a scenario chronicled in the documentary film Catfish. While a few states have updated their laws to include online impersonation as a crime, it is often hard to track, with many unaware that they are victims. In one instance, a California man had his pictures “borrowed” and used by another man who was meeting women on a popular Jewish dating site. It was only by chance that he knew a woman who was communicating with this man and had received the pictures during their correspondence. In another instance, a 24-year-old Denver woman had her photos and details taken from her Facebook page and used by a 46-year-old woman for over six months to communicate with men that she met on various free and paid dating sites. No legal action was taken by the state in either case.

Dating sites are also a playing ground for con artists, criminals and sex offenders. Countless stories have surfaced about people who have sent money or goods to people who have romanced them online; others have been robbed at knifepoint, sexually abused and even murdered. It is wise, therefore, to add a layer of protection to your screening process by protecting your images and personal identity.

If you want to share photos with that online charmer-or with anyone else, for that matter-you should look into a private photo sharing service. Every dance generation had their look that represented the mind frame and issues of their time. Photography can tell us so much about our history and show us how far we have come and how far we still have to go. The belly dance costume throughout history has become a symbol portraying us as the seductress or temptress. Let’s look at Salome for example. The chance that she “belly danced” was slim because of the etiquette of her day and dancing like she is portrayed in movies would have ruined her chances for marriage. But history says she belly danced and requested to have John the Baptists head cut off. Belly dance through history became an accessory with Salome when in fact her dance style would have been more acrobatic. My point is that many artists through out history have painted the famous scene of Salome dancing which ultimately made her a symbol of seduction. So a painting or photograph can be a powerful influence on the minds of society. This can also lead us to contradictions regarding our image. How can we have a respectable image when our legacy is already tainted?

Cleopatra embodies all the elements that most women thrive to achieve. Her name alone can cause the imagination to run wild. Is this not the same reaction we want people to have when they see our photographs? If you look at websites and magazines you will see a variety of photographs of various dancers in sensual poses. A dancer can convey many messages with her body positioning which can lead the viewer to think her message isn’t just sensual but sexual. So photographs are used to get a certain message across to as many viewers as possible. So what happens when our message is portrayed in a well thought out photograph and the end result is not sensual but sexual? Where does sensuality and sexuality cross? The definition of sensuality is; the capacity for enjoying the pleasures of the senses. The definition of sexuality is; the state of being sexual.
So what if the two were combined together than that would mean that we enjoy our sense of being sexual. Is this bad? Cleopatra was aware of her sexual influence and as a woman ruler she used this to her advantage. In our day and age don’t we do the same but in a different way?

Isadora Duncan wrote:

“Virtuous people are simply those who have not been tempted sufficiently, because they live in a vegetative state, or because their purposes are so concentrated in one direction they have not had the leisure to glance around them.”

Isadora Duncan was also ahead of her time because she had many relationships and was an unfortunate drunk in her later years. The one thing I noticed about Isadora Duncan is that her personal life never showed in her photos and she was a true artist to the end (tragic as it was). So in Isadora Duncan’s case, her message was never misunderstood just like with Cleopatra. The difference is one used her sexuality and the other used her sensuality. Either way the image of both women whether it is in paintings or photographs depict images that invoke women from all over the world to try and emulate them. So what this says to me is that we want a little bit of both when we create our photograph image.

Our individual images in photographs are a big part in selling our dance ability to the masses. How do we choose an instructional DVD if we are not familiar with the teacher? The front cover says so much about her ability as a dancer and teacher. So when I worked with my videographer for my first instructional DVD, we decided to use a photograph with me dancing with a color format that would appeal to the eye. The artistry behind creating any image is essential in having a photograph that impacts our target market. So in the end we are selling both our dancing and our image. Both have to appeal to the masses in order for us to be a success.

How far can any belly dancer push her image and make it acceptable not only for our community but for the outside world? If too much sexuality is shown in a photograph does it affect the way our community sees the dancer? The reason why I am asking is because there can be so much insinuated in a pose. A seductive look can imply something that never crossed the mind of the dancer.

So what a dancer says in a photograph is powerful and can affect many people.

Society can create a double standard for anything it wants. Is our image as dancers facing this double standard not only from society but from our own community? Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s the LP covers were very provocative especially in regards to the poses of many of the belly dancers. Some of the costumes had slits up the thigh showing only skin and see through skirts and there is even a dancer with no skirt on at all. We don’t dress this way today and costumes of today have a more designer look to them. It’s evident that our fashion sense has changed through out the years but how about our attitude toward provocative poses and skin? As women in a very unique and ancient dance form I feel it is important to show in photography how we have changed through out history. These photographs are “our” lineage and they show the world what and who we are. Perhaps because of issues with self image and the Playboy era we have wanted to say, “We are different”. We don’t have to take our clothes off in photographs to get across that we are sensual and sexual women. On the other hand I myself love photographs that show a part of a leg or shoulder and the back.

As Mae West once said:

“I speak two languages, Body and English.”

So perhaps without knowing it we have taken all of our trials and tribulations as women and found the perfect outlet to express our feelings and thoughts about the world around us. Dance expressed through the body demonstrates those wordless poems that can only be conveyed with emotional and passionate motion.

Photographs that capture these emotions through movement, poses and attitude, than become timeless and a way we make “our” mark on the world.

When I’m on stage I often feel naked because all of me is being expressed through my dance. So my image on stage is many things including the sensual and sexual. Today I have found peace with both therefore my photographs show the viewer the woman that I am and the dance that I represent. Photography shows how comfortable I am with myself. So do we critique photographs by how comfortable or uncomfortable we are with our own body image? It’s only natural to do so. In the end how we view photography says a lot about how we live our lives and feel about ourselves. There is no right or wrong way to view photography. And since your body is a representation of your life impression, photography is what you want it to be. One of my favorite quotes says it well:

Religion says: The body is a sin.

Science says: The body is a machine.

Advertising says: The body is a business.

The Body says: I am a fiesta.

Thank goodness for Facebook, otherwise the police would have to work a lot harder to put sexual predators in jail. What used to be bragged about in a bar, “I grabbed her and did X, Y, and Z to her,” is now a tweet, a text, a blog subject, or a posting by the perpetrator, complete with accompanying cell phone photos of crime scenes, evidence, and unclothed body parts.

For the entitled sexual narcissist (save your Congressman Weiner remarks), who can’t wait to tell others about what he has done, the lure to reveal is made much easier by the growing collection of social media outlets. And so you ask, “Why would a man who engaged in a coercive sexual act against a woman tell the whole world?”

The short answer is he can’t help it; it’s in his nature. He has a desire to tell his tale, even if it brings the consequences of being caught. Stupidity is one part of it, certainly, but the definition of the sexual narcissist is a person who is self-centered, self-perceived as blameless, lacking insight as to his harm to others, and sadly, unlikely to change, even with therapeutic intervention.

Speak to any veteran sex crimes detective, and he or she will describe two types of sexual acts against women: one which is valid, a “real rape,” versus once that is a result of poor decision-making, known as a “regret case.” The former occurs when a woman was truly sexually assaulted against her will. The latter situation – which is not actually a rape at all – can happen when a woman engages in consensual sex with a man, and later comes to regret the event the next day. Examples include sex after too much drug or alcohol use at a party, “revenge sex” to get back at an uncaring boyfriend, or sex with a stranger while a husband is out of town or on a military deployment.

Unfortunately for police investigators, the efforts to determine which event occurred – real rape or regret case – takes equal amounts of time and energy to determine which was which.

So this is where the Internet can help police crack the case. Suspects who make social media postings about their behaviors, locations, possible witnesses, and even alibis, can be seen online and evaluated by detectives as true or not. Sometimes the victim’s statement and the suspect’s behavior line up, resulting in his necessary trip to prison. Sometimes there are holes in the victim’s story, which are revealed online too, and where the suspect is no longer a suspect, but an unwitting participant in an event that had two versions.

But a more maddening question might be, “Okay, I get why sexual narcissists brag about their victimizing exploits. But why do victims of sexual violence post what happened to them online?”

Perhaps the answer is found in the differences between the generations. What a 50-year-old female would take to her grave in shame and silence, a 20-year-old might likely post on her Facebook page. Victims of sexual assault who are younger and tech-hip, are surprisingly more likely to reveal what happened to them publicly. They may do this to serve as a warning to other women about a sexual predator that is known to their circle of friends. Or the victim is looking for support from her peers. Or the victim is rationalizing her behavior in the aftermath. For regret cases, these postings often start with, “I can’t believe what I did last night.” For real rape cases, the victim may say, “I can’t believe what happened to me last night.”

When it comes to technology and crime, consider this (strange but true) story. A 22-year-old woman is asleep on the couch at her friend’s beachside apartment in southern California. Her 23-year-old friend is asleep in the adjoining bedroom, with the door closed. In the wee hours, an intruder breaks in and stands over the woman on the couch and touches her leg. She wakes up to see him and immediately reaches for her cell phone. She quickly texts her friend in the other room that she needs help. Would you have done the same thing in that situation?

Let’s review. She did not call 911 for help; she did not scream for help; she did not jump up and run for the other room to get help. She texted a message to her friend for help. The friend got the text, because she slept with her cell phone too, and came running out. The bad guy fled and then they called the police.

The combined age of both women was 46. Would a 46-year-old woman use her cell phone to text a friend, in the same anxious situation? Generations appear to divide along technological lines.

Do the police need a search warrant to seize a person’s computer or cell phone and put them through thorough forensic exams? Of course. Does a police detective need a search warrant to sit in the comfort of his or her stationhouse office and look at a suspect’s Facebook, Twitter, or blog account? Of course not. The online information is public, accessible, and often quite informative.

Are people who engage in violent, coercive, or inappropriate sexual behavior stupid enough to admit their actions online? Yes, which can be bad for them and good for police, prosecutors, and ultimately, the victims.

People have always bragged about their exploits, legal or otherwise. Now they have a new forum, which is global, visual, immediate, historical, uncensored, (and uncensorable), to post their stories, actions, behaviors, opinions, and photos. But just because you can brag, doesn’t mean you should. Fortunately for the police and the victims of sex crimes they try to help, the entitled sexual narcissists in our world, they can’t help themselves.

Emotional Transmutation is possibly the most powerful force of change or motivation one can consciously control. Simply stated, emotional, or sexual transmutation is the conversion of latent or dominant emotional / sexual energy into useful productive energies for self growth, reaching goals, personal change, or other purposes.

Think about it, what urges drive and shape a hugely profitable fashion industry? What thoughts have risen up onto a pillar the massive pornographic industry? What desires assist you to stay in shape, look your best, or drink a low fat latte instead of a regular?

The Power of Desire

When you are attracted to a member of the opposite sex, what happens? Something in your brain is triggered; It is something you cannot explain. It borders obsession, hinges on lust, and craves the adventure of the chase. Love may be a factor but the core human response to these initial interactions is simple – raw desire.

Occasionally love gets in the way and often times heartache can play a factor in the achievement of desire. Thankfully, heartache and sexual desire are the two biggest known factors of motivation aside from self-preservation.

We humans will go through many phases of development but a primary developmental factor evident in all stages is the drive to procreate – to connect – to give life to someone or something that will exceed beyond our own legacy.

Intense feelings of longing or need can accompany desire in its nonsexual capacity as well. Just think about the last time you saw something that you wanted to badly that it became a need. If you continued to think about this object, person, or substance that need would begin to transform into a strong, burning desire.

Whenever an experience, idea, or substance engages us and moves us toward this need to “feel good” we tend to gravitate towards it. We tend to crave it. We tend to circumvent all odds just in order to get it.

So, how can we learn to consciously channel our desires for things less exciting than sex, drugs, and rock and roll? How can we assimilate this type of motivation into tasks such as living our dreams or actively pursuing our most wild fantasies?

For many of us, simply channeling a bit of extra juice in the workplace would be a huge benefit.

The Power of Passion

Passion is easily confused with desire. In fact, the difference between the two is more or less a simple application of logic. Where they differ lies within the fact that passion pertains to something understood to be in possession. In order to have a “passion” for something, you must first obtain it or have a good working knowledge of it.

Passion is more closely related to the emotional response caused by desire (lust) and can extend the psychological imprint of desire.

The reason for this is that passion is an emotional, or chemical, release by the brain in response to the ego-driven and primarily intellectual causes of desire. If you desire something so deeply that it triggers emotion, passion will release feelings similar to or equaling love in order to act as an emotional reinforcement.

This chemical response of “feeling good” is then used by the brain to categorize the pattern as desirable and a new neural imprint is then stored in our subconscious.

Any repetitive thought or action steeped in emotion will likely become a self fulfilling prophecy. Because you are consciously aware of your thoughts, actions, intentions, and the role they play in your success or failure you can begin using visualization to complete the triangle. Are you ready to hit the triple play?

Using Visualization, the Final Step

Visualization is the activity of mentally altering your thought process to “escape” reality. Visualization is an integral part of many meditative practices, success workshops, and coaching strategies. Psychologists use visualization to assist their patients. Prayer is also a form of visualization. If you have ever daydreamed, you have practiced visualization.

To do this activity, you will need a colorful photo of something that holds some emotional significance. You could use a photo of your home, your new car, your spouse, or a vacation spot which you have visited or would like to visit.

For best effect, the photo should contain vibrant colors.

Find a quiet, comfortable location either sitting or lying down. Take care to remove any tight fitting clothing or objects which could alter your experience, such as a wallet in your back pocket. If you are sitting, you should sit erect with your feet touching the ground. If you are lying down, lie on your back with your legs comfortably stretched.

Now, look at the photo for a few moments, focus on the details, the colors, and the environment. After focusing on the photo for a few moments, shut your eyes. As your eyes adjust to the darkness and your surroundings fade, begin to recall the photograph. Do you feel a breeze? Are there any smells? Perhaps a garden is nearby? Can you feel the sun on your skin? If the photo was of a person, interact with them, hug them, be in the moment.

Use your imagination to put yourself into the photo and the environment to the best of your ability. This is a right hemisphere function of the brain, therefore some may find it easier to do than others. Do not worry, simply practice and take your time.

The key here is to learn to trick your mind into believing it’s own illusion. When you are able to clearly visualize something you desire, and desire it so heavily that emotions and passion run parallel, you are ready to actively begin reprogramming your brain using visualization, passion, and desire.
