Research Services

 

The mandate of Office of Research Services (ORS) is to support researchers with all aspects of their research activities. This mandate encompasses a broad suite of services which includes assisting researchers in every step of the pre and post research grant funding process, grant funding administration, knowledge mobilization, human participants research ethics, animal use protocols, and intellectual property management and technology transfer.

 

The services offered through the ORS include:

One of the main functions of the ORS is to work with faculty members and support them in all aspects of successfully obtaining and managing funding for their research program.

This support includes but is not limited to:

  • reviewing and providing feedback on grant applications,

  • assisting faculty in finding appropriate external funding opportunities,

  • managing and offering support for internal funding opportunities,

  • delivering workshops about grant opportunities and grant writing best practices,

  • meeting one-on-one with faculty to develop grant proposals as well as long-range plans for research funding,

  • assisting with mid- and end-of-grant progress reports,

  • working as a liaison between researchers and funding agencies to resolve issues or answer questions,

  • working as a liaison between researchers and the finance department to resolve issues, and

  • support and assistance with the ROMEO database.

LU’s REB is a committee that reviews all research involving human participants. Their review is based upon the perspective of protecting human subjects involved in research protocols. REB’s role thus ensures compliance with the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS). The committee is concerned basically with what happens to the participants before, during and after research has been completed. REB membership consists of multidisciplinary faculty with various areas of expertise in research, graduate students, as well as community members.

The role of this office is to support the development of relationships between industry and Laurentian, evaluate, protect and commercialize intellectual property developed at the university and disclosed to the Office of Research Services, and provide the coordination of provincially-led entrepreneurship activities.  Specific tasks related to intellectual property management include:

  • advising faculty and students on matter matters relating to intellectual property including patents and copyright

  • reviewing and evaluating invention disclosures

  • conducting prior art and patent searches

  • developing marketing strategies, contacting potential licensees and negotiating licenses

  • managing all expenses and revenues related to commercialization.

Safety standards are designed to reduce the inherent risks in the handling of dangerous materials and potentially dangerous procedures or practices. All laboratories can be inherently dangerous places and the attitudes and actions of those who work in the laboratory determine their own safety and that of their colleagues and, ultimately, that of the community. Different standards are set for different levels of risk.  High levels of risk require more stringent standards than lower levels of risks. Laboratory equipment and design have become more sophisticated and safer, but safe operation still depends on properly trained and genuinely concerned personnel, who are safety conscious at all times.
