Impact Engineers

Impact Engineers are a group of cross disciplinary humanitarian engineers aspiring to make a difference to the world’s developing communities. Impact Engineers currently focus their efforts in rural Sri Lanka however over the next three to five years, they will expand to launch projects across multiple developing countries.

Who we are

We are a group of students from a variety of different backgrounds, coming together to work towards making a positive change to society. Our goal is to empower communities in need with the skills and assets to develop and sustain a better quality of life. A by-product of our efforts is a platform whereby future students will be involved in the innovation and management of humanitarian engineering projects.

Major goals and achievements

  • Completed a $20,000 water access project in Galwaduwagama, Sri Lanka which provides 2000+ residents with affordable clean drinking water. To read more about the incredible impact this initiative had on the local community, click here. 
  • Established a joint venture community-wide education program with the University of Peradeniya Engineers Without Borders and Sati Pasala Foundation.

Why you should join

Impact Engineers offers students the opportunity to get involved in a variety of fields and activities. From working with leading research groups at UNSW developing culturally appropriate technology to implementing a development program directly with the local community, the opportunities presented by Impact Engineers are vast and varied. Impact Engineers is an amazing way to gain hands-on practical experience within in a multi-disciplinary team.

Who we are looking for

Impact Engineers welcome students from all disciplines and years. Our projects require a diverse skill-set so students from all degree programs can make a positive contribution.

We are looking for committed, dedicated and hardworking students to work in a team environment to complete our project(s). 

My Story - Hiruni Walpola

Hiruni is a Renewable Energy Engineering and Commerce student at UNSW. Here is what she had to say about her experience so far at Impact Engineering:

“My love for my home country Sri Lanka and my intrinsic values to help those who are in need made me want to do something to give back to society. I decided to expand my horizons and turned to humanitarian engineering, getting involved with several initiatives at Humanitarians Without Borders in Sri Lanka and Pollinate Energy in India. Building on these experiences, I then joined a team who were working on project Pathuma: the aim of the project was to give those living in rural Sri Lanka access to clean water. Succeeding that, I had the opportunity to introduce and lead a joint venture for underprivileged societies, The Community Empowerment and Mindfulness Program. Working with Impact Engineers has not only given me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience practically applying my engineering skills to humanitarian projects, but it has also pushed me forward to greater heights. As a young humanitarian engineers, I aspire to spearhead and drive my vision to inspire humanity through sustainable development.”
