The Columbia University Libraries (CUL) web resources collection program archives selected websites in thematic areas corresponding to existing CUL collection strengths, websites produced by affiliates of Columbia University, and websites from organizations or individuals whose papers or records are held in CUL's physical archives.

Collection: Resistance
The Resistance web archive is a thematic collection, created by Columbia University Libraries, of websites documenting and embodying grass roots political resistance activities in the United States arising in the wake of the election and inauguration of Donald Trump. Includes selected web resources focused on: protest/demonstration planning; calls to action and guidelines for political participation by citizens; official statements in response to controversial executive orders; and campaigns to contain and mitigate the effects of specific dramatic policy shifts. Archiving of selected websites began in April 2017, wtih periodic re-crawls of those websites that continue to be updated, and new websites added to the collection as they are identified.

Our Work

  • Judicial Selection

Every day, federal judges protect the Constitution, place a check on overzealous legislatures, and help Americans find justice.

  • Bolder Advocacy

Demystifying and decoding advocacy by equipping organizations with knowledge and tools.

  • Access to Justice

Over the past several decades, a conservative-led campaign has eviscerated the ability of Americans to have their day in court.

  • Supreme Court

We fight to hold the court to the highest ethical standards, and we fight for a court that upholds the rights of everyday Americans.

  • Yeomans Work: The Court v. Democracy

In the latest edition of Yeomans Work, AFJ Senior Justice Fellow Bill Yeomans writes that with midterm elections less than two weeks away, “hundreds of thousands of qualified voters will face barriers established by Republican state officials, and millions more will have the impact of their votes diluted by partisan gerrymandering.” Republicans stand to benefit, Yeomans writes, and in each instance, their advantage was enabled by the Republican-appointed majority of the Supreme Court.

  • AFJ: Nominations Hearing a “Farce”

This recess hearing was a farce. Only two Republican senators showed up, only Senator Crapo bothered to ask the nominees two questions apiece, and the hearing for two lifetime appointments to the Ninth Circuit was over in less than twenty minutes.

  • Two Trump Ninth Circuit Picks Sail Through Abbreviated Recess Confirmation Hearing

Four Trump administration nominees, including two seeking seats on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, coasted through their judicial confirmation hearing Wednesday, fielding only a handful of questions in a session that lasted less than an hour.

  • Unequal Justice: Why Trump Picked Kavanaugh

When President Donald Trump announced the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy at a televised ceremony in the East Room of the White House on July 9, both he and the nominee uttered a whopping pack of lies.

  • The Cruelty of Brett Kavanaugh

On September 27, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee to address Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s credible sexual assault allegations against him. Since that hearing, much of the focus has been on Kavanaugh’s blatant lies. But Kavanaugh’s performance also laid bare what many had already known: Brett Kavanaugh acts cruelly toward those outside of his elite circle of friends and colleagues. In fact, Kavanaugh’s lack of empathy appears to extend to anyone without a country club membership. It is a central character trait – he has repeatedly demonstrated, throughout his life, a callousness that has no place on our highest court.

  • We’ve Been Here Before

On Friday, the Trump Administration’s instructions to the FBI proved that we are about to repeat the mistakes of the past. The similarities between Trump’s apparent sham investigation of Brett Kavanaugh and the investigation of Clarence Thomas are striking.

  • The Court v. Democracy

Voters who are able to cast ballots on November 6 will participate in a system that has been made far less democratic. By upholding measures that block ballot access, gutting the Voting Rights Act, declining to remedy unconstitutional gerrymanders, and permitting unregulated amounts of money to flow into politics, the Supreme Court has cleared the field for Republicans to limit the franchise and dilute its effect.

  • The Captured Court

In the aftermath of the Kavanaugh confirmation, Supreme Court justices have taken to public fora to assert the independence of the Court and to assure the public that the Court is not a political institution. Most prominently, Chief Justice Roberts distinguished justices from officials in the political branches, noting that “they speak for the people” while the justices “do not speak for the people, but we speak for the Constitution.”
