Tax Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 1937. We have no endowment and must raise our budget to support our programs each year. As a policy, we neither solicit nor receive financial support from any government entity.
Our 2017 support ($5,324,219) came from philanthropic foundations (38%), business contributions (29%), donations from 1,862 individuals (14%), events (15%), investment revenue (1%), and publication sales and miscellaneous (3%). No donor contributed more than 15 percent of our revenue.
Our 2017 expenses ($4,869,096) were programs ($3.40 million, or 69%), fundraising and outreach to potential donors ($1.12 million, or 24%), and general and administrative ($0.35 million, or 7%).
Our 2018 budget approved by our Board of Directors projects $5.05 million in revenue and $4.99 million in expenses.
