"I never came from that school of thought that because you're in a romantic comedy that you need to act romantic comedy," Marsden says. "We wanted to make this obviously enjoyable, fun and funny, but as real as possible."

"I definitely think the reason the movie still works today and people love watching it is because it all stems from the top and [director] Anne Fletcher's energy and openness," Burns says.

"We did a table read and she opened up her script and proceeded to nail every single line and joke," screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna remembers about Heigl. "I've been doing this a long time I still don't think I've ever seen anyone sit down and hit every pitch across the plate. Every. Single. One."
