    1977 A radio signal from deep space was picked up at the Ohio State University Radio Observatory. It was so strong the observer wrote "Wow!" next to it 👽 explains more in this Human Universe clip from 2014:

    1888 Thomas Edison held a press conference in London to introduce his phonograph or gramophone, playing one of the first recordings of music ever made 🎶 Here's one of his company's GEM phonographs from 1903 in the collections:

    The phonograph is a small black machine with simple gold coloured decoration. It plays a cylinder wax recording that can be seen under a large black funnel shaped speaker.

    John Logie Baird (1888–1946). He built the first TV set using an old hatbox, scissors, some darning needles, a few bicycle light lenses, and a used tea chest 📺 Here's a slightly later model (but hardly a 40 inch) in the collections:

    The televisor is a dark metal rectangle box with a semi circle coming out of the top. On the front left there is a small dial and on the front right a tiny screen. In the middle is a brass plaque with a planet surrounded by a cloud and 'The Televisor' written above it. It looks nothing like a modern TV.
