Central Notes: Bagley, Jones, Wright, Dragic, Bulls Offseason

The Pistons are prepared to make a three-year offer to restricted free agent Marvin Bagley, James Edwards III of The Athletic reports. He fit a need for an athletic big man, which is why they traded for him just before the deadline. However, Bagley may seek a shorter deal and test the open market if his stock rises, so that he can get a bigger payday.

  • It’s been reported that the Cavaliers would entertain a reunion with free agent guard Ricky Rubio. However, there are other options on the table to provide backcourt depth, according to Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Cavs are also interested in several other unrestricted free agents, including Tyus Jones, Delon Wright, Raul Neto and Goran Dragic.
  • Which players should the Bulls retain and which should they shed? Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic takes a closer look at that topic in a player-by-player breakdown. His position on unrestricted free agent Zach LaVine? He’s one of the keepers.
  • DeMar DeRozan said he’s open to recruiting players to Chicago but Bulls coach Billy Donovan said no matter what happens in the offseason, expectations need to be tempered, Jon Greenberg of The Athletic writes. “I think you have to be careful, and what I mean by that is, we got off to a really, really good start this year,” he said. “And it was really impressive to me with a new group that hadn’t had a lot of time together that they could jell and mesh the way they did. We’ll actually have to work harder going into this offseason and next year to even get back to this point.”

Markieff Morris Fined $25K For Violating League Rules

The NBA, which has doled out a number of fines during this postseason, added Markieff Morris to that list on Thursday.

The Heat forward has been docked $25K for interfering with live game play while on the bench, in violation of league rules, NBA Communications tweets. Morris’ infraction occurred during Game 5, when Miami closed out its series against Atlanta.

Morris, who was not in the game at the time, grabbed and held Hawks guard De’Andre Hunter out of bounds, which prevented Hunter from completely reestablishing himself inbounds as he caught a pass from a teammate. Morris received an unsportsmanlike technical foul for his actions, which occurred during the third quarter.

Earlier in the day, the league fined Jimmy Butler and the Heat organization $15K apiece. Butler made an obscene gesture and the Heat organization posted Butler’s act on social media.

Morris was fined $50K for a dustup with Denver’s Nikola Jokic in November.

Follow The NFL Draft At Pro Football Rumors

The 87th NFL draft begins tonight from Las Vegas. Our sister site, Pro Football Rumors (@pfrumors on Twitter), has all the top stories covered. Although this draft differs from the past several, as it appears to lack a top-end quarterback, the event features a host of teams with high-stakes decisions. This promises to be the most enigmatic NFL draft in at least nine years.

Picking first for the second straight year, the Jaguars have their quarterback (2021 top pick Trevor Lawrence) and are focusing on their lines. Georgia defensive end Travon Walker has become the odds-on favorite to be the No. 1 pick, despite fellow D-end standout Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan) producing far better college numbers. But Jags owner Shad Khan was believed to disagree with GM Trent Baalke‘s Walker preference, adding intrigue to tonight’s top pick. The Jaguars are also interested in trading down, though a lack of interested suitors may force them to stay at No. 1.

The Panthers look to represent the draft’s first quarterback domino, having needed an answer here since Cam Newton‘s injury run began years ago. Rather than the NFC South team gambling on one of this class’ polarizing QBs, waiting for a mid- or post-draft trade for the Browns’ Baker Mayfield is in play. That said, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule recruited one of this class’ top QBs (Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett) when he was Temple’s coach years ago; a belated partnership remains a possibility. The Falcons (No. 8), Seahawks (No. 9), Saints (No. 15) and Steelers (No. 20) also loom as quarterback suitors. Liberty’s Malik Willis and Ole Miss’ Matt Corral join Pickett as this class’ top signal-caller prospects; the group could be in for an Aaron Rodgers-esque green-room wait.

This draft’s most interesting subplot: the 49ers’ Deebo Samuel decision. The All-Pro wide receiver requested a trade last week. Reports of Samuel disenchantment with the 49ers’ first extension offer, his unconventional role as a part-time running back, and a desire not to live in California have come up as reasons for the request. The Jets are viewed as Samuel’s most likely landing spot, and the 49ers’ future with the fourth-year playmaker could come down to the wire tonight — with a loose deadline being the Jets’ No. 10 overall pick.

Grizzlies Center Steven Adams Enters Protocols

Steven Adams will miss Game 6 of the Grizzlies’ first-round series against the Timberwolves after entering the league’s health and safety protocols, the team’s PR department tweets.

Adams started 75 games for the team with the Western Conference’s second-best record during the regular season. Due to matchups, Adams has dropped out of the rotation during the opening playoff round. After playing 24 minutes in Game 1, Adams has only seen seven minutes of action.

Forward Ziaire Williams is listed as doubtful with right knee soreness. Williams has appeared in all five games during the series, averaging 5.6 PPG in 11 MPG.

VanVleet To Miss Game 6; Booker Returns For Suns

5:05pm: Booker will play tonight, according to coach Monty Williams, Andrew Lopez of ESPN tweets.

4:40pm: The Raptors have ruled out guard Fred VanVleet for Game 6 against the Sixers tonight, according to coach Nick Nurse, Tim Bontemps of ESPN tweets.

VanVleet had been listed as doubtful. The Raptors will be looking to stave off elimination once again and even up the series at 3-3 with a win in Toronto.

VanVleet suffered a left hip flexor strain in Game 4 on Saturday. Toronto emerged with a 103-88 win in Game 5 without him as Nurse used an unconventional rotation without a true point guard.

Meanwhile, the Suns will look to close out their series with the Pelicans with their leading scorer back in action. Devin Booker is expected to play in Game 6 tonight, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweets.

Booker will test out his strained hamstring in pregame warmups, and assuming all goes well, he’ll be back on the floor after missing the past three games.

Phoenix has gone 2-1 without Booker, who is officially listed as questionable.

And-Ones: Pangos, West, Wright, Emmert

Former Cavaliers guard Kevin Pangos will sign with Italian club Olimpia Milano next season, sources tell Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. Pangos played six seasons in Europe before earning a roster spot with Cleveland in training camp.

Pangos saw spot duty in 24 games for Cleveland, averaging 1.6 points and 1.3 assists in 6.9 minutes per night. He was waived in February.

The 29-year-old reportedly inked a deal with CSKA Moscow after his stint with the Cavs, but hadn’t traveled to Russia as of March 1 due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In 2020/21, Pangos averaged 13.5 PPG and 6.6 APG on .449/.390/.845 shooting in 39 EuroLeague contests (28.9 MPG) for Zenit Saint Petersburg, earning a spot on the All-EuroLeague First Team.

  • Delonte West, who played eight seasons in the NBA from 2004-2012, has joined the Big3 draft pool, the league announced (via Twitter). The 38-year-old appeared in 432 career games, averaging 9.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.1 steals in 27.4 minutes per contest.
  • Former Villanova coach Jay Wright is leaving the door open to a potential move to the NBA, according to a report from ESPN. “Not right now. That was something I always thought about,” Wright said of his NBA ambitions. “My experience with the Olympics kind of scratched that itch. … I kind of feel like I did it a little bit. And I loved coaching those guys.” Wright was part of Gregg Popovich‘s staff for the 2020 men’s team, who won the gold medal last summer. “Right now I definitely need a break,” Wright said Tuesday. “Right now I’m looking forward to this [special assistant] position at Villanova. But honestly, down the road, I’d be lying — I don’t know what I’m going to feel like.” A previous report indicated the NBA didn’t appeal to Wright.
  • NCAA president Mark Emmert has agreed to step down from his post by June 2023, per Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico. The move came as a surprise to many in the college sports world. Emmert has served as president since 2010.

Bulls Notes: DeRozan, LaVine, Continuity, Williams, White

Bulls All-Star DeMar DeRozan says he has no doubt that All-Star teammate Zach LaVine deserves a max contract this summer, writes Rob Schaefer of NBC Sports Chicago. As an unrestricted free agent with seven years of experience, LaVine is eligible for a five-year deal from Chicago worth approximately $212MM.

“Yeah. Max player, max talent, max everything,” DeRozan said when asked if LaVine is a max-worthy player after the Bulls’ season-ending loss to the Bucks Wednesday night. “He’s one of those players in this league that you don’t see too often. I tell him all the time how envious I am of the things he’s able to do. He deserves everything that’s coming to him for sure.”

DeRozan added that LaVine is extremely competitive in everything he does, on and off the court.

“(He’s) just the ultimate competitor,” DeRozan said of LaVine. “That’s the best way I can sum it up. No matter what it is. I remember, we played tic tac toe on the plane, and I kept beating him and he wouldn’t leave me alone until he beat me. And that’s just him on the court as well.”

  • Center Nikola Vucevic said the front office and coaches stressed continuity in his season-ending exit interview following the team’s playoff ouster. “They want to have continuity, that’s for sure,” Vucevic said, per Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times. “As far as moves they can make, I don’t really know that. That’s their job.”
  • DeRozan also believes the team’s core will return next season, but that doesn’t mean management won’t look to improve the roster if the opportunity presents itself (Twitter link via K.C.   • Forward Patrick Williams says he’s looking to improve his consistency next season and has studied DeRozan’s habits to learn how to prepare as a pro. Lonzo Ball’s Rehab At “Standstill,” Will Visit Specialist Next Week

Bulls guard Lonzo Ball, who was officially ruled out for the season on April 6 after experiencing a couple of setbacks in his surgically-repaired left knee, says his rehab is “kind of at a standstill right now,” according to K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago.

Ball plans to visit another specialist next week, as he’s still experiencing pain from the bone bruise in his knee.

“Kind of let it calm down for the last two weeks. I was going at it pretty hard trying to get back as fast as possible,” Ball said. “But like I said, at a standstill, still have pain. So gotta get that figured out this summer for sure.”

Ball said he isn’t sure whether he’ll need a second surgery, but hopes to avoid it if possible.

“Hopefully not. I wouldn’t want to have another one,” he said. “But if that’s what it takes, then I pretty much have no choice at this point.”

As Johnson notes, injuries have been a concern for Ball throughout his pro career. The January surgery to repair his torn meniscus was the second time he’s had a procedure to repair the same cartilage in his left knee, the first occurring in 2017.

Ball has appeared in 252 of a possible 390 games in his five-year career, including 35 of 82 this season. He admitted something needs to change in the offseason.

“Obviously, something needs to be addressed this summer—a lot more leg workouts as opposed to probably upper body,” Ball said, per Johnson. “I’m going to work with the doctors and the strength coaches and do what I gotta do to get healthy.”

Acquired in a sign-and-trade deal with New Orleans last offseason, Ball played a major role in Chicago’s impressive first half. He started 35 games at point guard, averaging 13.0 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 5.1 APG, and 1.8 SPG with a .423 3PT% and strong defense. The Bulls went 22-13 in games he played, and 24-23 without him.

The 24-year-old will earn $19.5MM in 2022/23, the second season of his four-year, $80MM contract with Chicago, which includes a player option in 2024/25.

Heat, Jimmy Butler Fined $15K Apiece By NBA

All-Star forward Jimmy Butler has been fined $15K for making an obscene gesture and the Heat organization was also fined $15K for posting Butler’s act on social media, the NBA announced (via Twitter).

The incident occurred on the bench in the second quarter of Miami’s Game 5 victory over Atlanta on Tuesday (video link). Butler was sidelined for the contest with right knee inflammation.

The Heat closed out their first-round series in five games despite missing Butler and point guard Kyle Lowry (left hamstring strain). The team is hopeful both players will be available for the second-round matchup against either Philadelphia or Toronto, which will start next Monday.

Butler had another strong regular season for Miami, averaging 21.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.6 steals on .480/.233/.870 shooting in 57 games.

After leading the Heat to the Finals in 2019/20 with several brilliant performances, the 32-year-old struggled mightily in last year’s first-round sweep at the hands of the Bucks, posting averages of 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 1.3 steals on .297/.267/.727 shooting.

However, Butler was outstanding in Miami’s series win over Atlanta, averaging 30.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.8 steals on .543/.438/.794 shooting in four games. The Heat will need more strong play from the six-time All-Star in order to make another deep postseason run.
