Prayers from the Ancient Celtic Church is a collection of prayers from the time of Patrick (d. ca. 460-493) to the Synod of Whitby (664), and also from the Celtic Christian tradition that remained after Whitby. A few of the prayers in this book may be familiar from their appearance in other prayer books. Some may be appearing in English for the first time. All prayers (with one exception) are rendered or revised into contemporary English with the hopes that they will be useful in private and corporate worship.

W pamiętniku Cezara „O wojnie galijskiej”  (łac. Commentarii de bello Gallico), opisującym 9 lat wojen galijskich (58-50 p.n.e.), czytamy o wielu nazwach i ugrupowaniach plemiennych oraz o informacjach geograficznych, które wykorzystywano do rekonstrukcji obrazu antycznej Galii i Germanii. Problem w tym, że łacińskie transliteracje lokalnych nazw pozostawiają wiele do życzenia, a językoznawcy głowią się nad ich pochodzeniem. Niestety w tych zabiegach pomijają oni w ogóle możliwość ich wendyjskiej (prasłowiańskiej) etymologii, gdyż przyjmują bezmyślnie fałszywy paradygmat naukowy, że Wędów / Wendów (Prasłowian) wówczas nie było na tych terenach. Zapominają też przy tym o obecności Wenetów w Armoryce i Brytanii, którzy bezsprzecznie byli związanie z Wendami.

W tym krótkim opracowaniu staram się przekazać najważniejsze informacje z pamiętników Cezara o wojnie z Galami, Brytami, jak i Germanami, którzy często angażowali się w lokalne potyczki za lewym brzegiem Renu, stając po różnych stronach konfliktu. Bacznie przyglądam się też możliwym źródłosłowom poszczególnych nazw własnych i miejscowych podawanym przez Cezara. Dostrzegam w nich wendyjskie korzenie, co może wydać się szokujące po pierwszym czytaniu. Mam nadzieję, jednak, że po bliższym zapoznaniu się z faktami i przedstawioną przeze mnie argumentacją, niektóre propozycje etymologii wydadzą się przekonujące.

Culture Clash and Cross-Fertilization in the religions across the Roman world. The process of Interpretatio is an important mechanism to overcome the cultural differences in the Roman empire by providing a common language that is intelligible across this vast empire. The association between an indigenous/local and Greco-Roman divine concept are not superficial; instead, we recognise here the cross-fertilisation between different cultures; the original act of "interpretatio" only sets in motion long-term processes that will, in the long run, significantly change the nature of local cults. Interpretatio indigena refers to the local population making interpretations with Greco-Roman and Greco-Oriental deities.

Throughout history, the Druids have always been seen as sorcerers who had a strong bond with nature. Ancestral knowledge holders within Celtic society, directed all religious activity as the highest authority linked to the gods, practiced human sacrifices and festivals organized as Imbolc, Beltaine, Lugnasad or Samain, etc.. all aspects of which are discussed in this article.

This article discusses a problem in integrating archaeology and philology. For most of the twentieth century, archaeologists associated the spread of the Celtic languages with the supposed westward spread of the ‘eastern Hallstatt culture’ in the first millennium BC. More recently, some have discarded ‘Celtic from the East’ in favour of ‘Celtic from the West’, according to which Celtic was a much older lingua franca which evolved from a hypothetical Neolithic Proto-Indo-European language in the Atlantic zone and then spread eastwards in the third millennium BC. This article (1) criticizes the assumptions and misinterpretations of classical texts and onomastics that led to ‘Celtic from the East’ in the first place; (2) notes the unreliability of the linguistic evidence for ‘Celtic from the West’, namely (i) ‘glottochronology’ (which assumes that languages change at a steady rate), (ii) misunderstood place-name distribution maps and (iii) the undeciphered inscriptions in southwest Iberia; and (3) proposes that Celtic radiating from France during the first millennium BC would be a more economical explanation of the known facts.

The subject of this study is a stater found in Masłów (Lower Silesia) in 1704: the oldest documented find of a Celtic coin from the area of the present-day Poland. The coin, which has been regarded as missing until recently, was successfully identified with a high degree of likelihood in the collection of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. The present study has carried out an analysis of the unit and the records concerning it, particularly emphasising the issues related to iconography, examined against a broad comparative background. The summary includes conclusions concerning the place of striking and dating of this unique coin.

"Confronting the question, ‘what did the Celtic tribes eat in the British Isles’ the paper gathers information from a variety of sources to answer this inquiry which draws mainly from the British Isles, but other areas of research have been gleamed from the Continent and taken from Roman and Greek commentary to better detail this inquiry.  The resulting report is a suggestion of the possibility of food sources and their uses that may have been enjoyed by the Celtic peoples living in the Isles.

Around the year 300 B. C. the Greek author Hecataeus of Abdera wrote a record about the legendary people of the Hyperboreans in the far north of Europe. This record is only in fragments available and conained a detailed description of this nation and the island where they lived, and also of its religious ideas. This work of Hecataeus is handled by modern researchers as a literary product of fantasy with utopian tendency. Of course there are imaginative traces in this document, but some things could also be recognized as very realistic. In this paper it shall be shown that Hecataeus had indeed written about the mythical people of the Hyperboreans, but under that name, however, he understood a people which actually existed for him. He reported very accurate about the culture of the island Celts of Southern Britain, but he did not call them "Celts". His work is obviously a fictional travel novel in which Hecataeus wanted to teach his readers, but there are in this travel novel descriptions of the culture of a real people in a mythological guise.

The volume presents monographically the discoveries of the second Iron Age in a well-specified area of Transylvania. More specifically, it is the period when Celtic civilization is archaeologically certified in that area (end of 4-th - beginning of 2-nd century BC). This work was the subject of the author’s dissertation for the Phd. And the work is representative for the Transylvanian area. Actually, it was the first regional monographic synthesis, concerning Celtic discoveries in that region. It was drafted in Romanian but also contains a generous summary in English, with reference to the most important references and illustrations.

The following dissertation is a description of Celtic languages in the Indo-European context, where a brief statement about this linguistic phylum is presented, along with the families and languages composing it. Subsequently, an explanation about the origin theories of Celts and their languages will be provided, as well as a classification of the languages belonging to this family. Additionally, the main features that distinguish this phylum from the rest, and the ones which are more relevant, will be presented in a concise manner, as far as its phonology, morphology and syntax are concerned. To conclude, the case of Irish Gaelic will be deeply explained, as well as the example of Hiberno-Irish, including a comparison of borrowings between Irish and English.

Tenemos ante nosostros un libro de Arqueología poco ortodoxo que saca a esta disciplina de sus límites tradicionales. Se propone una historiografía crítica y reflexiva como práctica fundamental previa a cualquier interpretación arqueológica. En este sentido se repasan desde las primeras intervenciones en casteos en las Asturias decimonónica, a la implantación del "paradigma celta" en el periodo franquista y su sustitución por un cientifismo aséptico en la actualidad. Pero sin olvidar que al margen de la ciencia se han dado en la sociedad asturiana múltiples representaciones históricas sobre el periodo prerromano, ya sean las de los primeros ilustrados, las que contenido político por parte del regionalismo conservador de comienzos del S. XX y el nacionalismo de izquierdas actual o las míticas de la Asturias tradicional.

Um das Jahr 300 v. Chr. verfasste der griechische Autor Hekataios von Abdera eine Schrift über das sagenhafte Volk der Hyperboreer im hohen Norden Europas. Das nur noch in Fragmenten auf uns gekommene Werk beinhaltete eine detaillierte Beschreibung dieses Volkes und seiner Insel, die es bewohnte sowie seine religiösen Vorstellungen. Dieses Werk wird in der Forschung als literarisches Phantasieprodukt mit utopischer Tendenz des Hekataios behandelt. Selbstverständlich lassen sich in dieser Schrift Spuren phantasievoller Einschübe erkennen, wobei man allerdings manche Dinge als realistisch deuten kann. Wie in diesem Beitrag zu zeigen sein wird, hatte Hekataios zwar über das mythische Volk der Hyperboreer geschrieben, aber unter diesem Namen verstand er allerdings ein Volk, welches für ihn tatsächlich existierte. Er berichtete nämlich sehr genau über die Kultur der Inselkelten Südbritanniens, nennt sie jedoch nicht „Kelten“. Sein Werk ist offensichtlich ein fiktiver Reiseroman, in welcher Hekataios seine Leser möglicherweise belehren wollte, doch mit Beschreibungen der Kultur eines realen Volkes im mythologischen Deckmantel.

Abstract: This article explores the battle scene on a small bronze plaque recovered during the excavation of the Great Altar of Pergamon, initially published in 1913 and subsequently lost. It argues that the most likely identification of the scene is the Battle of Magnesia, fought in 190 BC. The scene features Attalid cavalry riding to the rescue of distressed Roman legionaries, both fighting in opposition to Antiochus the Great’s heavy phalanx and Gallic cavalry. The heroics of the Attalid cavalry are central to the scene, and likely reflect a courtly narrative that gave Eumenes II and his small contingent outsized credit for the joint victory.

This essay presents a brief explanation of the Biblical teaching about Satan and the demons, a summary of the history of Halloween, modern manifestations of Satanic and demonic involvement in Halloween, and Christian responses to counter the growing influence of Satan and the demons, especially at Halloween.  Reasons are identified for the need to take the presence of evil at Halloween very seriously, yet at the same time, because Jesus Christ has conquered the world and is Lord over all, providing assurance of peace that only he can give.

Gegenstand vorliegender Arbeit ist der Versuch, in neuer Weise den Wandel, zu dem es am Ende des 1. vorchristlichen und zu Beginn des 1. nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts im uns interessierenden Gebiet kam, zu betrachten und zu interpretieren. Es handelt sich folglich um einen breiteren Horizont als nur die Phase, während der das Marbod-Reich bestand. Eine sehr wichtige Rolle spielen dabei Funde aus dem Gebiet an der Nida, vor allem von den durch den Verfasser geführten Grabungen bei Pełczyska. Hier befindet sich ein großes und reiches Siedlungsensemble, welches Fundplätze vom Neolithikum bis zum Frühmittelalter umfasst. Zur riesigen Fundmasse als Zeugnis außergewöhnlicher vor- und frühgeschichtlicher Siedlungsaktivität gehört auch eine umfangreiche Artefaktsammlung aus der uns interessierenden Phase. Dieses Material spiegelt hervorragend die komplizierten Besied- lungs- und Kulturveränderungen wider, welche in Kleinpolen zu jener Zeit vonstatten gingen, füllt in bedeutender Weise Wissenslücken und wirft neues Licht auf eine Reihe von Problemen. Die Funde von Pełczyska demonstrieren, wie unzureichend unsere Quellenbasis ist, auf der wir die komplizierte Thematik angehen. Hier werden nämlich die Probleme von Migrationen, von kulturellen und ethni- schen Differenzierungen sowie vielschichtige Fragen überregionaler Bedeutung berührt, alles von dynamischen, kurzfristig ablaufenden Umgestaltungen betroffen. Doch sind die Quellengrundla- gen dazu sehr bescheiden. Dies betrifft unter anderem das wenig umfangreiche Metallmaterial vonSiedlungen, was – nach Meinung des Verfassers – vor allem auf die hauptsächlich in den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren, zum Teil auch noch später, angewandte Grabungsmethodik zurückzuführen ist. Dies betrifft nicht nur Kleinpolen, aber Symbol dessen wurde das vor kurzem entdeckte, keltische, überregional bedeutsame Handwerks- und Handelszentrum vom Typ Roseldorf-Němčice auf dem Gelände einer in dieser Zeit untersuchten Siedlung bei Nowa Cerekwia, pow. Głubczyce, woj. opolskie. Ein weiteres Problem ist das Fehlen von Gräberfeldern der vorrömischen Eisenzeit, erklärbar nur mit spezifischen Bestattungssitten der Kelten seit der jüngeren Phase der Mittellatènezeit. Das nahezu völlige Fehlen auch von Gräberfeldern der Träger der Przeworsk-Kultur wird traditionell mit der Übernahme keltischer Sitten erklärt. Neue Funde, darunter von Pełczyska, scheinen anzudeuten, dass diese Deutung in Gänze oder zu großen Teilen falsch ist. Die Gründe für das genannte Phänomen sind offenbar viel prosaischer. Aus ökologischer Sicht gehört das uns interessierende Gebiet zu den degradiertesten ganz Polens. Durch Charakter und Umfang negativer Umformungen führte die Anthropopression die Landschaft in einen katastrophalen Zustand. In Konsequenz dessen wurden archäologische Fundplätze in unvorstellbarer Weise gestört. Die Entdeckungen auf den Fundplätzen bei Pełczyska, besonders den sepulkralen, waren durch glücklichen Zufall und dank der angewandten Untersuchungsmethoden möglich. Dadurch verdop- pelte sich innerhalb weniger Jahre die Zahl donauländischer Importe der Phasen LT D2 – B1a. Von weitreichenden, vorher unbekannten Kontakten der ansässigen Bevölkerung zeugt eine Reihe von Neufunden. Dieses Beispiel zeigt eine einsetzende, weitreichende Neubewertung des Charakters und der Rolle Kleinpolens bei den breit verstandenen Kontakten zwischen Caput Adriae und den Gebieten an der Ostsee an der Wende von der vorrömischen Eisen- zur römischen Kaiserzeit. Dies betrifft auch die Frage seines Verhältnisses zum Marbod-Reich, die in der Fachliteratur im Grunde noch überhaupt nicht gestellt worden ist.

Trees have always been an integral part of human existence. So deeply embedded is this relationship between humanity and trees, that they are to be found at the heart of many religions and “spiritual” mysteries as sources for wisdom and structures for understanding. The cosmic tree stands at the centre of the world, (Yggdrasill) which it supports and nurtures. All the great and momentous occasions of our lives occur through the medium of the tree. We are born from it, it feeds and shelter us, gives us wisdom, and we make sacrifice to it.

For know the controversial history of the Druids in the Celtic world, will investigate the sources of its origin, through stories of classic texts and medieval legends of Gaul, Britain and Ireland. His role in Celtic society surpassed the religious sphere, covering war, politics, medicine and the law. Almost unknown is the participation of women in this institution.

Die Kelten als Paradigmen. Der vorliegende Artikel befasst sich mit der Bedeutung des Begriffes „Kelten“ und den Möglichkeiten, dessen Inhalt
zu untersuchen und den Begriff zu benutzen. Die Kelten werden in der Regel als Volk, Nation oder ethnische Gruppe aufgefasst, was zu den
Bemühungen führt, ihre Geschichte von ihrem Anfang bis in die heutige Zeit zu rekonstruieren. Die Archäologie kann allerdings mit ihren Quellen
die Ethnizität nicht bestimmen, weshalb sie sich diesbezüglich auf schriftliche Quellen stützt. Die Bestimmung der Ethnizität und die Definition, wer einer bestimmten ethnischen Gruppe angehört oder eben nicht, war und ist nicht einheitlich. Für die Antike steht keine Charakteristik der Kelten zur Verfügung, die von ihnen selbst erfasst wäre, deshalb verlassen wir uns auf die Nachrichten von Griechen und Römern. Die schriftlichen antiken Quellen zeigen allerdings, dass die Berichte über Kelten verschiedene Populationen zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten und in verschiedenen Gebieten bezeichnen. Der Begriff Kelten besitzt in ihnen einen variablen, dem Gedankenmuster des Verfassers entsprechenden Inhalt, der durch die Zeit und die Kultur geprägt ist, in denen er lebte und schuf. Kelten sind in diesen Texten also vielmehr ein künstliches Konstrukt als die Kennzeichnung eines wirklichen Volkes. Der Artikel fordert deshalb auf, den Begriff Kelten nicht als Bezeichnung einer ethnischen Gruppe, sondern als Konstrukt und Paradigma zu erforschen. In diesem Sinne gibt es folglich viele Paradigmen der Kelten. Sie entstehen seit der Antike bis in heutige Zeit. Somit sind die Kelten in archäologischen Texten auch als solche Paradigmen zu verstehen. In diesen entspricht der Begriff Kelten trotz jeder Bemühung der modernen Autoren nicht der ehemaligen realen keltischen Ethnizität, sondern ist Resultat der Arbeit von Generationen von Forschern, die ihn mit Hilfe von archäologischen, schriftlichen, linguistischen und weiteren Quellen gebildet haben. Diese sogenannten archäologischen Kelten unterscheiden sich nicht nur von den Kelten(-paradigmen) in den antiken Quellen, sondern auch von den Kelten(-paradigmen), die Historiker, Linguisten, Anthropologen oder Wissenschaftler anderer Fächer geschaffen haben. Sie unterscheiden sich auch grundlegend von den Kelten(-paradigmen), die einzelne moderne Nationen, z. B. Franzosen, Iren, Waliser u. ä. schufen und pflegen.

Die langlebige (ca. 800-200 v. Chr.)-anfangs offene-Siedlung von Meillionydd auf der Halbinsel Llŷn in Nordwestwales wurde um 500 v. Chr. in eine monumentalisierte doppelte Ringwallanlage umgestaltet. Im Rahmen der Neugestaltung wurde ein mittelgroßes (ca. 7 m Innendurchmesser) Rundhaus als eine architektonische Einheit mit der südlichen Wallflanke des äußeren Eingangs errichtet; zugänglich direkt von der geschotterten Straße, die durch den äußeren, torlosen Durchlass durch den Außenwall durch eine Torkonstruktion im Innenwall in den (inneren) Hof führt. Dieses Haus war gut gebaut und entspricht in Größe und Design den Häusern im inneren Hof, die als die primären Wohnbauten in der Anlage angesprochen werden können. Es ist das einzige solche Haus im Vorhof, dem Raum zwischen innerem und äußerem Wall. In der mittelalterlichen walisischen (königlichen) Hofterminologie würde das dieses Haus zum ty e porthaur machen, zur "Portiersloge". Es stellt sich daher die auch von König Arthur im ersten Satz eines wohlbekannten (aber nur unvollständig im Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin überlieferten) frühen walisischen Gedichts gestellte Frage: "Pa gwr yv y porthaur?" Was für ein Mann ist der Portier?

Alberto Álvarez Lugrís utiliza el concepto de paratraducción como instrumento de análisis para establecer qué elementos antropológicos se recuperan de la antigüedad gallega con el fin de conformar las identidades actuales. En las últimas décadas se ha producido una apropiación y paratraducción del celtismo y en este capítulo se describe la función que tiene en la identidad gallega actual. El autor desvela los argumentos ideológicos de apropiación del celtismo que hace el gobierno de la Xunta de Galicia, a través de sus empresas públicas, usando el mecanismo ideológico de desactivación política del nacionalismo gallego para convertirlo en algo «inocuo» frente al Estado desde el punto de vista político, pero con un rendimiento en el ámbito económico-empresarial. Se paratraducen ciertos elementos simbólicos en el sentido de anestesiar el discurso identitario nacional, pero se mantiene el elemento diferencial de Galicia frente al resto del Estado como marca comercial y/o reclamo turístico

The presence of celtic populations in the south of the Iberian Peninsula is a fact which has generally been accepted since the beginnings of modern linguistic and archaeological
investigations. However, ideas and interpretations have varied notably. This work aims to carry out a historiographic approximation of this interesting but also undoubtedly complex problem. Through a diachronic analysis it will be shown how the importance attributed to the celtic element in the southern protohistory has varied. It will also be demonstrated how at present this issue, even though not denied, is practically absent from the research agendas.

The subject of the present analysis are bronze rings (bracelets/armlets?) decorated with a cord ornament, known in archaeological literature as type Șimleul Silvaniei and Rustoiu 3. The paper starts out with an overview of past research on the impact from the Dacian territory on Iron Age inhabitants of Poland since type Șimleul Silvaniei bracelets are an element of this phenomenon. It follows with an analysis of the context of discovery of these ornaments in the area to the north of the Carpathians and the Sudety. Next, insights obtained from this analysis are used as a point of departure to examine the chronology, origin and distribution of type Șimleul Silvaniei in reference to the conclusions of Romanian researchers Aurel Rustoiu and Cristinel C. Plantos.

The exact chronology of Dionysius I’s campaigns in the ’80s of the IVth
century B.C. is still in question. The sources relate Dionysius’ capture of Rhegion (Diodorus, Polybius, Dionysius of Halicarnassus) and the treaty with the Gauls (Justin) to the sack of Rome by the Senones: to make all these accounts converge, we should date the fall of the Urbs in late July 387 B.C. The coincidence of the Gallic invasion and the siege of Rhegion suggests us that there may have been a remote planning of the Syracusan approach with the Celts; according to the deeds of Dionysius I’s in the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas and the chronology of Philistus’ mythological narrative, Syracuse’s interest with the Gauls may have been developed in the ’90s. Such a scenario would allow us to suppose that the Syracusan court played a role in the Celtic migratory phaenomenon before the sack of Rome with an anti-Etrurian and anti-Roman aim. By
the end of the ’80s, the absence of Philistus from the court may have induced Dionysius I to use the Gauls as mercenaries rather than allies.
