An extensive programme of experiments was conducted in the former USSR on transfer of radionuclides to a wide range of different agricultural animals. Only a few of these studies were made available in the English language literature or taken into account in international reviews of gastrointestinal uptake. The paper gives extended information on Russian research on radionuclide absorption in the gut of farm animals performed in controlled field and laboratory experiments from the 1960s to the current time. The data presented in the paper, together with English language values, will be used to provide recommended values of absorption specifically for farm animals within the revision of the IAEA Handbook of Parameter Values IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency, 1994. Handbook of Parameter Values for the Prediction of Radionuclide Transfer in Temperate Environments, IAEA technical reports series No. 364. International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna].

Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) has been identified as a significant problem in goat production, especially in the arid and semiarid lowland areas of Ethiopia. Even though CCPP was reported in most of the goat rearing areas of the country, there is no adequate information on the disease in the Amhara Region. Cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2016 to April 2017 in the districts of Western Amhara to estimate the seroprevalence and identify the associated risk factors for occurrence of the CCPP. The risk factors considered included age, sex, agroclimate, and districts. A competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) was carried out on a total of 400 goat sera samples, out of which 34 samples were found seropositive for specific antibodies against CCPP, with the overall seroprevalence of 8.5% (95% confidence interval (CI) =5.8, 11.2). Effect of various voltage of electrical stimulation (ES) on meat quality of lamb and goat was investigated by using a total of 36 animals at 3-5 years old. Constant 50 Hz frequency and 50, 100, and 250 V, 90 sec of ES were administered to 1/2 carcasses and were examined according their textural, physicochemical, and sensorial characteristics. ES decreased the pH values of lamb and goat meat, and accelerated the rigor mortis (P < 0.05). Additionally, ES enhanced the water activity, water-holding capacity, and drip loss of both animals. Shear force varied between lamb and goat meat, and tenderness was improved depending on voltage range used (P < 0.001). ES caused difference in instrumental colour (CIE L*a*b*) values of lamb and goat meat compared with the control groups (P < 0.05) during aging period at 4°C. This study investigated the concept of using plates to attach endoprostheses to bone after segmental resection for bone tumours in an animal model. Titanium alloy plates integrated with the prosthesis and coated with hydroxyapatite were attached to bone by screws. This type of uncemented fixation relied on the induction of periosteal bone formation into and around the plates to secure the implant to bone. Tow, three, and six-slotted plate designs were investigated. On retrieval, each plate was securely fixed by new bone. Bone apposition on the external surface of the plates occurred through a combination of periosteal bone production, invasion of bone through slots in the plate, and bone growth over the ends of the plates. Most plates became incorporated into a remodelled cortex. Higher bone turnover rates (μm day−1) were seen in bone in the slots of the plate compared with normal cortical bone turnover (p < 0.05). Significantly higher rates of turnover were measured beneath slotted parts of the plates compared with regions below the unslotted parts (p < 0.05). The cross-sectional area of bone surrounding the six-plate implant design was significantly higher than that of the three-plate (p < 0.05) and two-plate (p < 0.05) designs. In addition, significantly more bone formed adjacent to the six-plated implant design compared with that in the contralateral limb (p = 0.002). However, no significant difference was found when the total cortical area around the three-plated design was compared with that of the contralateral limb (p = 0.63). In contrast, significantly less bone was measured adjacent to the two-plate design than in the untreated limb (p = 0.001). Image analysis also demonstrated increased cortical porosity adjacent to the six-plate design compared with the three-plate (p = 0.004) and two-plate (p < 0.05) designs. Finite element analysis demonstrated that the six and three-plate designs increased the second moment of area compared with that in the left tibia (p = 0.003 and 0.066, respectively). However, the attachment of the more flexible two-plate design did not significantly increase the second moment of area compared with that in the contralateral limb (p = 0.235). It was concluded that due to both mechanical and biological effects, the hydroxyapatite-coated plate designs generated new bone that enhanced fixation and encouraged plate integration into the load-bearing structure of the cortex. This method of fixation may be an alternative to the use of intramedullary cemented stems in patients requiring bone tumour implants and may be the only way to preserve the joint in difficult cases where only short segments of bone remain.

Infection with gastrointestinal nematodes, particularly Haemonchus contortus, is a major constraint to goat production in the southeastern United States. Non-anthelmintic control alternatives are needed due to increasing resistance of these nematodes to available anthelmintics. Two studies were completed in Central Georgia in August 1999, and April-May 2000, using Spanish does naturally infected with Haemonchus contortus, Trichostongylus colubriformis, and Cooperia spp. to evaluate effectiveness of nematode-trapping fungi as a biological control agent. In the first experiment, five levels of Duddingtonia flagrans spores were mixed with a complete diet and fed once daily to the does (three per treatment) in metabolism crates. This study was conducted using B-mode transrectal (TR) and transabdominal (TA) ultrasonography to determine early pregnancy and fetometry. A total of 110 does aged between 8 and 36 months were used. The detection of early pregnancy and foetal number was measured. The relationship between gestation age and crown-rump length (CRL) and bi-parietal diameter (BPD) was determined from days 40 to 109 of gestation. The accuracy of foetal sexing was determined by differentiation of genital tubercle (GT) from days 40 to 109 of gestation and then followed up after birth. The examination revealed 95.5% of does were pregnant, with 100% accuracy in detecting pregnancy for positive cases. The foetal number was 45.7% and 54.3% for single and twins/triplets. The TR probe enabled more reliable and early recognition of foetal fluid (5 days) and heart beats (4 days) than the TA probe. The TR observation of heart beats is recommended as conclusive evidence of the presence of a live foetus. The TA convex probe was used from days 40-89 to measure CRL and from days 40-109 to measure BPD. The relation between gestational age and CRL or BPD were highly significant (p<0.0001). The accuracy of sex identification among the three groups was not significantly (p>0.05) higher in single, compared to multiple pregnancies. In total, 83.3% and 70.2% of single and twins and triplets were sexed. After birth, one case was misdiagnosed by ultrasound, i.e. 83.3% (single) and 68.4% (twins and triplets) were sexed. However, identification of GT in male foetuses was possible from day 40 onwards. From a total 105 scanned does, 80 (76.2%) were sexed and 75.2% of cases were sexed after birth. B-mode real-time ultrasonography is recommended as a reliable means that can be used in field conditions to provide early detection of gestation as early as 19-27 days after mating, for CRL or BPD measuring and foetal sexing from day 40 of gestation onwards.

The genetic diversity and population genetics of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto complex were investigated based on sequencing of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Total 81 isolates of hydatid cyst collected from ungulate animals from different geographical areas of North India were identified by sequencing of cytochrome c oxidase subunit1 (coxi) gene. Three genotypes belonging to E. granulosus sensu stricto complex were identified (G1, G2 and G3 genotypes). Further the nucleotide sequences (retrieved from GenBank) for the coxi gene from seven populations of E. granulosus sensu stricto complex covering 6 continents, were compared with sequences of isolates analysed in this study. A highly sensitive N gene-based PCR-ELISA for the detection of Peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV) was developed. The RT-PCR yielded a digoxigenin (DIG)-labeled product of 336 bp comprising a sequence from PPRV N gene, which was then detected by ELISA. The assay could detect the viral RNA in PPRV-infected tissue culture fluids with a titer as low as 0.1 TCID(50)/ml. The assay is 10,000 times more sensitive than a classical RT-PCR combined with agarose gel electrophoresis. The assay could detect the virus in the clinical samples, which were negative by conventional sandwich ELISA (S-ELISA). The percentage positivity of the assay in detecting the virus in clinical samples was 66.2% compared to 48.6% for S-ELISA. The assay was more sensitive than S-ELISA also in detecting the virus in early as well as late phases of the disease. In addition, the assay could also be used for differential diagnosis of PPRV and Rinderpest virus (RPV).

Ticks have an important role in human an animal health. Besides their direct pathogenic role (spoliation of blood, cutaneous lesions), they can inoculate haemolysis molecules, anti-coagulants sometimes toxics and they can also act as vectors of many pathogens (virus, bacteria and protozoa) responsible for potentially serious infections in humans and several animal species. The present study was conducted in the Tiaret region with the aim of determining the frequency of infestation and identifying the tick species encountered in small ruminants. Small ruminants had an overall frequency of 53.73%. By species, goats were more infested with 75% against 48.11% recorded in sheep. The average overall parasite load was 5.51 T/A and 21.64 T/A in sheep and goats, respectively. The preferred attachment site for ticks has been the ears in sheep. In goats, anal localization was predominant. Rhipicephalus sanguineus was the most dominant species in sheep in the study region, with a percentage of 66.89%, followed by Rhipicephalus turanicus with a rate of 16.72% and Rhipicephalus bursa with 16.39%. Rhipicephalus bursa was the most dominant species in goats with a percentage of 89.44%, followed by Rhipicephalus sanguineus with a rate of 9.9%. However, Rhipicephalus turanicus and Hyalomma lusitanicum recorded only a rate of 0.49% and 0.17% respectively. The rates of infestation and the number of ticks collected are high, which should prompt us to conduct in-depth studies on the diseases transmitted by these ticks and the use of acaricides for the treatment and prevention of infestation by these arthropods.
