Pussy Riot’s surprise punk prayer at the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ Our Savior instigated significant controversy in Russia and resulted in the conviction of three Pussy Riot members on the charge of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.” While the Russian Orthodox Church swiftly condemned the performance as blasphemous, Pussy Riot has contended that its punk prayer is consistent with the message of the Gospels. This study investigates the punk prayer controversy in relation to the figure of the holy fool, a radical behavioral model canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and secularized in Russia’s literary and artistic traditions.

Simon Springer (Department of Geography, University of Victoria, Canada) contributes this short essay about his visit to Moscow and Domitrov. He organized a session titled “For Kropotkin” with Anthony Ince for the IGU Moscow Regional Conference and made a trip to the Kropotkin museum in Dmitrov.

This article reviews various anomalies of speleothems formation in underground rivers and drains in Moscow. Travertine speleothems form on the inner walls of collectors, which is similar to the same forms of subrelief in karst caves. Density of travertine speleothems vary from 5–6 per m2 to 30–40 cm of flowstone rind and 50–200 m long. Moscow city has 57 zones of speleothems formation, which totals about 1,5% of studied drainage system of the city. Relevant map of these zones is included in this paper.
The distribution and volume of these underground formations exceed leaching from concrete construction by 100–1000 times. These zones have sharp borders, which don’t depend on shape, inclination and construction material of drains, relief and specific types of industrial waste from the surface. Speleothems formation in drainage systems has natural origin.
Major morphologic types of speleothems are reviewed in the current study. Among them: stalactites, flowstones, moonmilk, stalagmites, rimstone dams, calcite straws, ribbon stalactites, baldacchino canopies and others. Average age of speleothems in Moscow doesn’t exceed 120 years. The largest speleothems structures are comparable to humans by volume; the longest stalactites are about 1 m long.

В статье дан обзор аномального травертиногенеза, наблюдаемого в подземных реках и ливнестоках Москвы. На внутренних стенках коллекторов в обилии формируются травертиновые наросты (аналогичные наложенному субрельефу карстовых пещер). В обнаруженных аномальных случаях наросты локализуются с плотностью от 5-6 шт. на 1 кв. м до сплошного чехла-коры мощностью до 30-40 см в виде зон длиной порядка 50-200 метров. Всего в Москве выявлено 57 таких зон, которые составляют вместе 1,5% исследованной дренажной сети города. Составлена карта аномалий.Размеры и обилие наростов при этом заведомо превышают возможные объемы выщелачивания из обделки на 2-3 порядка. Границы зон довольно резкие не зависят от изменения формы сечения или материала обделки, уклона коллектора, рельефа местности, наличия каких-либо специфичных производств на поверхности.В статье показаны основные морфотипы наростов, встречающихся в подземных реках и ливнестоках. Возраст описанных для Москвы форм не превышает 120 лет. Крупнейшие отдельные наросты сопоставимы по объему с человеком; самые длинные сталактиты достигают 1 м.

Murawski’s article examines the political economy and political aesthetics of public space in contemporary Russia, focusing on Zaryadye Park. It argues that the current transformation of public space in Russia is at the epicentre of a global Culture Tree, in which progressive notions of ecology, publicness and hybrid subjectivity are appropriated in the service of an emergent, “recolonial” regime of speculative sovereign capitalism (in Russian)

The Church of the Vernicle was build in 1774 - 1783 in estate Rai-Semenovskoye near Moscow. On of the outstanding temples built by Russian architect Matvey Kazakov. The article is dedicted to its history and architecture. Most of the historical photos from the family archive of the last estate owners are published for the first time.

An attempt was made to describe the fact that the quantity of the magazine “Voshod” subscribers dramatically decreased in Moscow in the early 1890’s. A lot of Jews, who hadn’t right to live out of the Pale of Settlement, were evicted. Based on the population census data and magazine’s statistics, the author concludes, that some of the subscribers had no rights either, lived in Moscow illegally and were also evicted.

В статье с привлечением ранее неиспользованных архивных материалов о производственной деятельности рассмотрен вопрос о функционировании Трехгорной мануфактуры – одного из старейших (существовала с 1799 г.) и крупнейших российских текстильных предприятий – в переломный период войны и революции. Статья содержит данные о структуре производства, бюджете фабрики, численности и составе рабочих, технической оснащенности российскими и иностранными станками, социальной политике хозяев – фабрикантов Прохоровых, диверсификации выпускаемой продукции в годы Первой мировой войны и сбытовой стратегии в этот период. Также проанализирована историография 1930-х – 2000-х годов, предложено объяснение, почему по политическим причинам (рабочих увлекали эсеровские, а не большевистские лозунги) знаменитая фабрика на Пресне в Москве не изучалась в период с середины 1930-х по середину 1960-х годов.

В иллюстрированной книге о Главном здании МГУ авторы описывают историю (в том числе историю строительства), устройство, а также архитектурные особенности Главного здания. Приводится большое количество фотографий, иллюстраций и схем. Многие материалы публикуются впервые.

The paper explores the relationship between photography and architecture as a mutually constitutive one. Besides standing as subjects for the camera, buildings can also extend the photographer’s capability to depict the surrounding landscape. In the interwar period, this interplay was exploited by avant-garde photographers associated with the “New Vision” who used architecture as a viewing platform. Among them was Aleksander Rodchenko, whose experiments with high-angle shots were part of the wider project to construct a revolutionary visual language for Soviet art. Moscow was the theatre of this visual revolution. Eight decades later, Italian photographer Gabriele Basilico visited the Russian capital and produced a photo-book, Mosca Verticale, that references Rodchenko’s work in more than one way. Atypically, Basilico elevated the vue en plongée to his main framing device as he set out to depict the sprawling city from the Seven Sisters – the monumental high-rise towers built under Stalin between the late 1940s and the mid 1950s. Through considering Basilico’s words as well as his pictures, the essay unpacks the multiple layers that constitute Mosca Verticale. It draws connections not only with the work of Rodchenko but also with that of Russian “rooftoppers” who, in recent years, have raised the vertiginous representation of the city to new heights. As a cluster of “supertall” buildings redesigns its skyline, Moscow is once again the European epicentre of a particular type of interaction between photography and architecture, whereby the latter serves as a platform to visualise the dizzying spaces of the metropolis.

The critical edition of Roman Statkowski’s (1859–1925) correspondence. The gathered epistolary material includes 56 letters written by the composer to his close friends (Emil Młynarski and his wife Anna Młynarska), former teacher (Władysław Żeleński), and acquaintances (Aleksander Dienheim Brochocki-Szczawiński, and Stanisław Bursa). The manuscripts of the epistolary documents under discussion are preserved at the Lietuvos Literatūros ir Meno Archyvas in Vilnius, Biblioteka Narodowa in Warsaw, and the Biblioteka Jagiellońska in Cracow. From the late 1896 onwards, Statkowski stayed in Berlin, where he wrote his first opera to a German libretto by Herman Erler. Around the end of 1898, Statkowski arrived in Russia. Initially he was employed in the Moscow branch of a musical instruments store owned by the Warsaw company Herman & Grossman. Later, probably in the second half of 1901, Statkowski started working in the Saint Petersburg branch of the same company.
The largest number of letters in the collection were written in 1903. This year brought a breakthrough in Statkowski’s life. Following a sharp conflict with his employer Ludwik Grossman, the composer lost his post at Herman & Grossman. As a result, he found himself in dire straits and suffered a nervous breakdown. At this difficult moment of his life, Statkowski was given a helping hand by Emil Młynarski, who played a significant role in patching up the conflict. Młynarski, to whom many of Statkowski’s letters were addressed, provided the composer with lodging at Młynarski’s family manor in Iłgów (now Ilguva in Lithuania). It was there that Statkowski received good news from UK. His opera "Philaenis", whose libretto had been translated into English by Percy Edward Pinkerton (1855-1946), received an award in the Moody-Manners Opera Company competition. Not being able to collect the award in person, the composer chose Count Aleksander Dienheim Brochocki-Szczawiński (the husband of Adelajda Bolska, a then-famous Polish singer), who was residing in London at the time, to act as a proxy for him in this matter. Statkowski’s correspondence with Brochocki reveals, however, that the count did more harm than good to the composer’s career: his pointless arguments with the organizers of the competition completely ruined Statkowski’s London success and, as a result, the plans for a performance of "Philaenis" at Covent Garden petered out. The West-European newspapers and musical periodicals acclaimed Collin MacAlpin as the winner, without mentioning Statkowski at all.
Having been motivated to work by Młynarski, Statkowski soon composed his second opera, "Maria", in Iłgów. The opera received the prize in the Konstanty Wołodkowicz composition contest in Warsaw in 1904. In the meantime, Statkowski moved to Warsaw, where his dream – a stage performance of "Philaenis" finally came true. On 14 October 1904, the opera entered the repertoire of the Grand Theatre (with a libretto translated by the composer into Polish under the polonized title "Filenis"). Although part of the contemporary press subjected the opera to devastating criticism, the work was well received by the artistic circles, as testified in the hitherto unknown letter from Ludomir Różycki quoted in the introduction. While struggling with the difficulties connected with introducing his operas to the repertoire of the Grand Theatre, Statkowski at the same time resumed his career in the Warsaw musical milieu after a few years’ absence and started his teaching activity.
Soon after Młynarski had become the director of the Warsaw Instytut Muzyczny in 1 September 1904, the institution employed Statkowski as a teacher. In the years 1904 and 1905, Statkowski lent his support to Młynarski, who after assuming the position of the head of the Instytut Muzyczny had come into conflict with Aleksander Rajchman, the director of the Warsaw Philharmonic. In 1906, Statkowski celebrated the premiere of his award-winning opera "Maria". The correspondence shows that this period was the heyday of Statkowski's artistic career. For Statkowski, opera was the preferred field of artistic activity. His lifelong dream was to immerse himself in opera writing, a dream mentioned in a letter written in the final days of December 1912 in the wake of seeing two Polish premieres: "Meduza" by Ludomir Różycki and "Megae" by Adam Wieniawski. Unfortunately, “Maria” was to remain the last opera in his oeuvre.
After Młynarski’s resignation from the position of the director of the Warsaw Conservatory (Instytut Muzyczny) in 1907 and his emigration to England and Scotland, the issue of Statkowski’s opera works emerged only once in their correspondence in 1909, during the preparation of the piano score of "Philaenis" for publication by the Berlin musical publisher Ries & Erler. Młynarski’s efforts to promote Polish music in Great Britain are an interesting and still little-known subject. An event of huge importance was the concert of Polish music in the London Queens Hall, performed on 19 June 1913 (as the first in a cycle of three concerts of Slavonic music), which included also Statkowski’s overture to his opera "Maria". The significance of the correspondence published in the collection is manifold: the letters enable scholars to establish the precise dates of events important for Roman Statkowski’s life and work; they capture the composer’s psychological characteristics and personality type, the details of his social and professional life, general views on music as well as his political views; the letters offer insights into the matters that occupied Polish musical circles and the Polish intelligentsia at the time; and they containt remarks and comments pertaining to the contemporaneous political and social reality.

Ответ: Грехом является нарушение заповеди Божией, а не несоответствие каким либо аналогиям. Например, брак вдовы или вдовца также является oтклонением от этих образцов, но такие браки не являются грехом, также как и полигамные. Вопрос: Обязывает ли Библия мужчин заключать только полигамные браки? Ответ: Нет, но в Торе есть заповедь о так называемом левиратском браке - в случае смерти старшего брата, не оставившего сына, его жену должен взять себе в жёны его младший брат.  Вопрос: Разрещает ли Библия многомужество? Ответ: Нет! Многомужество Библия запрещает: "Замужняя женщина привязана законом к живому мужу; а если умрёт муж, она освобождается от закона замужества. Посему, если при живом муже выйдет за другого, называется прелюбодейкой; если же умрёт муж, она свободна от закона, и не будет прелюбодейкой, выйдя за другого мужа." Вопрос: О какой верности мужа может идти речь в полигамной семье, если муж занимается сексом то с одной женой, то с другой? Ответ: Верность мужа в полигамной семье означает его верность своим жёнам.  Вопрос: Если Новый Завет не запрещает многожёнство, то почему о снятии этого запрета ничего не сказал ни Иисус, ни Апостолы? Ответ: Потому что в Библии такого запрета никогда не было. Запрет на многожёнство в христианстве появился не ранее III века от Р.Х. Напомню также, что Новый Завет запрещает лишь совмещать многожёнство со служениями дьякона, пресвитера и епископа в церкви. Вопрос: В какую христианскую общину не глянь - везде женщин больше чем мужчин. Иногда в два, три раза превышают. Это хорошо, что женщин много, но многие из них не замужние и молодые. Но ведь им тоже хочется семьи и детей. Что делать в такой ситуации? Есть ли библейский метод решения этой проблемы? Какие идеи Библия предлагает? Мы знаем, что надо молиться и евангелизировать мужчин, но ведь Бог об этом тоже знает,  и в конце концов только он может изменять сердца и приводить людей в вою паству. Ответ: Многоженство и левиратский брак решило бы эти проблемы. Вопрос:    Как Христианство относится к многоженству? Ответ: Христианство в апостольские времена относились вполне положительно, вследствие чего оно росло и оказывало позитивное действие миру. Позже языческая культура  вошла в Церковь и она стала запрещать многоженство. Однако, есть Церкви, где  многоженство не запрещено. Нужно заметить, что Библия и учения подавляющего                  большинства церквей друг другу противоречат.  Вопрос:  Как атеисты относятся к многоженству? Ответ: Например, коммунисты СССР были против многоженства. Вопрос:  Как мусульмане относятся многоженству? Ответ: Коран, как и Библия, относится многоженству положительно. В Исламе даже поощряется многоженство, но иметь любовницу считается грехом, что прочем и в Библии запрещено.

Данная статья посвящена двум явлениям современной московской мусульманской жизни – громкому круговому зикру кадирийского тариката вирда Кунта-Хаджи, практикуемому чеченцами и ингушами в Исторической мечети, и религиозным практикам среднеазиатских " неинституционализированных" мулл в Соборной мечети. Я хотел избежать проблематизации своего исследования в рамках одного социального института или одного явления. Мне было важно показать фрагментарность, а также социальный, этнический, идейный и поведенческий плюрализм московского мусульманского пространства. Именно поэтому я выбрал в качестве case studies два разноплановых примера. С антропологической точки зрения, статья является попыткой пока-зать, как определенные мусульманские ритуальные практики производят простран-ство и конструируют идентичности. Если зикр является религиозной практикой внутренних мигрантов – чеченцев и ин-гушей, приехавших из российских северокавказских республик, то практика обращения к народным муллам распространена в первую очередь среди внешних мигрантов из стран Средней Азии. Однако для московской повседневной среды, в том числе и мусульман-ской, в которой элиту составляют исключительно татары, разница между внешними среднеазиатскими и внутренними северокавказскими мигрантами стерта. Обе духовные практики популярны и имеют большое значение для немалого количества московских мусульман, в том числе и тех, которые не участвуют в них непосредственно. Общность этих двух духовных практик заключается также и в их маргинальности по отношению как к институционализированному московскому исламу, так и к набирающим вес радикальным формам исламских практик и идей. Несмотря на " маргинальность " , практики локализуются в двух центральных мечетях города. Однако стоит отметить, что зикр проходит в подвале и не получает особенной поддержки со стороны администрации, а " народные муллы " предпочитают проводить обряды за забором мечети из-за запрета

In the 1990s, Arch Getty (UCLA), Bill Chase (Pittsburgh), Gregory Freeze (Brandeis) and I created the Soviet Archive Project to construct annotated inventories of key targeted research collections in Moscow. From 1990 to 2002, with grants from IREX and the National Research Council, we worked with Russian scholars and archivists to create the finest inventories of post-Soviet archival collections ever published. Between 1993 and 2002, we published twelve volumes of guides, and our Center for the Study of Russia & the Soviet Union was copyright holder of western editions shared with Moscow archives.

Earlier this year, the four of us agreed to release these guides in digital editions into the public domain: free for everyone, everywhere, for all time. Over the coming year, all twelve of these volumes will be published on various sites to ensure maximum distribution all over the world.

What Vladimir Shukhov has not invented: or Once again about the glass roof of Upper Trading Rows in Moscow

The article contains a few enough solid arguments for the excepting Upper Trading Rows (now GUM) covering from the list of structures designed by talented engeneer Vladimir Shukhov. Having based on archival sources as well as on formal analysis of construction (comparing with other Shukhov's works) it can be surely define: metal-and-glass covering of GUM had been projected, executed and installed by Saint-Petersburg Metal Factory without Shukhov's any participation.

The book explores the interrelation between the societal and spatial history in Moscow from 1917 to the 1960s. Five long-term case studies are discussed following the questions: What was planned and intended, what was actually built, how were the spaces appropriated by the citizens, and how did their attribution of meanings change? The case studies are: The Lubianka, Sukharevskaia ploshchad’, the Arbat neighborhood, Gorki Street and Novye Cheremushki.

Typical mass housing complexes constructed by the Soviet state in the 1920s and 1930s, and post-1950, were communities designed to meet residents’ housing, educational, cultural, commercial, and recreational needs in all-inclusive precincts. The remarkable eighty-per-cent-open site plans that these complexes proffered signaled the presence of a fully socialist land regime in which land held no monetary value. Now, more than twenty-five years after the fall of the Soviet Union, this exterior collective space that was a hallmark of Soviet socialist housing provision is under threat of extinction. In the spring of 2017, the Russian State government took up a bill to demolish nearly 8,000 ‘decrepit’ Moscow residential buildings in order to parcelize and sell the capacious landscape in which they sit on the open real estate market. This essay makes an argument for the unique qualities of these disappearing residential landscapes by articulating what so-called socialist space is, how it operates, what makes it worth preserving, and in conclusion offers options for approaching these fleeting remnants of a past economic regime.

This paper is present very common arithmetic circuit .This circuit is faster has low power consumption by
using a new 3 transistor XOR gate. It has two basic features high speed & low power consumption .For the
arithmetic circuit very useful parameter low power consumption & time delay. The area of a circuit is
directly related to number of gates used in a circuit. In the present design one bit 8T full adder minimizes
area, and hence power efficiency. This paper contributes to better understanding of the behavior of single
bit full adder cell .When low power delay products are essential full adder cell have been implemented in
Tanner 14 Ver. suit and simulation using 70nm CMOS technology to obtain of the performance of the cell
with respect to time and power consumption.

For the first time not only a precisely dated work of a great ancient Russian icon-painter Andrey Rublev but also a miniature of doubtless Rublev’s work is introduced into science. It is really providential that a scientific discovery fell on the 575th year from the death of a reverend icon painter, who departed in God on October 17, 1428.

Felieton opisuje przyczyny wejścia polskiej armii do Moskwy (po zwycięstwie pod Kłuszynem, opisanym w innym felietonie także udostępnionym w tym serwisie) i pozostawienie na Kremlu polskiego oddziału, który początkowo był przez Rosjan przyjmowany zdecydowanie przyjaźnie. Natomiast błędne decyzje króla Zygmunta III Wazy (opisane w innym felietonie także udostępnionym w tym serwisie) doprowadziły do powstania przeciw Polakom i do ich wypędzenia z Moskwy. Buildings and programs for Moscow made by the Soviet vanguards – constructivism, suprematism, cubofuturism, productivism, dis-urbanism, etc – during the 20s and 30s seem to continuely come back in our day-to-day experience. A vanguard that has deployed its effects throughout the twentieth century and is extending its extraordinary fascination even in the new century. Especially from the point of view of architecture and urban design, where some of the greatest contemporary urban landmarks have plainly introjected constructivist icons.
In London, for istance, Renzo Piano's shard is clearly modeled on a Leonidov project for a skyscraper, or Anish Kapoor's Orbit Tower is openly a tribute to Tatlin’s Monument to the Third International. Architectures that could only partially build Moscow as capital of the Soviet State, come back to build other cities in totally different contexts, as it has often been in urban history for architectures of great symbolic and evocative power.
The meaning of the exhibition City of Steel. Constructivist Moscow 1917-1937 is on one hand to organize a small archive which restores to their real and objective dimensions these architectures, often known only from unitelligible drawings, some of them lost during that terrible period of Russian history, and by  few, blurred photographs.
A metric, realistic and critical knowledge of these architectures, initiated by the students of the Drawing Class 2 held by professor Marco Bevilacqua in the Building Engineering-Architecture Faculty of the University of Pisa, continued in this exhibition and in its catalog.
On the other hand, to see how Moscow would have changed in its morphological features and in its urban dimension if, in one of the many sliding doors of history, it would have been built by avant-garde and not by the real-socialist classicism. A dystopic construction process of the city - an "analogous" Moscow - which, albeit in latent form, has always been in effect, because the architectures of Lissitsky, Mel’nikov, Leonidov and the Vesnin brothers had clearly predicted axes, themes and issues that the development of this great Eurasian metropolis have fatally faced in the next hundred years.
A hundred years have not been enough to vanish the wonder we still experience studying those projects, as if they were profoundly tattooed on the body of contemporary architecture, part of its deepest subconscious. The Soviet avant-garde is not a "lost vanguard" or "archeology of socialism," but a trend that for its radicalism and its timeless modernity offers itself to contemporary architects without any critical distance. And it is, at the same time, a set of ideas that we find everywhere in our lives: in buildings by Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid or Steven Holl, in the cover of a Franz Ferdinand's album, in a blockbuster of Hollywood. Because the story of Moscow's avant-garde is the story of our present.

Диссертация посвящена изучению столичного города через его туристическую функцию и вопросам познания городского пространства туристами в конце XIX – начале ХХ века. На основе широкого круга архивных и опубликованных источников, основными из которых являются путеводители по столичным городам и описания экскурсий, в работе изучаются процессы формирования и функционирования туристического пространства Санкт-Петербурга, Москвы и Парижа. Автором выявлен социальный состав русских туристов рубежа XIX–ХХ веков, рассмотрен процесс становления столичных городов как туристических центров, проведено сравнение туристических практик в российских столицах с аналогичными практиками в столице Франции, выявлена взаимосвязь образа столичного города, конструируемого в путеводителях, и его восприятия туристами. Кроме того, в работе анализируется процесс конструирования туристического пространства столичного города, выявляются критерии, по которым проводился отбор достопримечательностей для туристического показа, а также показывается влияние на этот процесс национального и имперского мифов.

This article presents original and previously unpublished documents from the case of Van'ka Kain (1741-1748). Van'ka Kain was a notorious Moscow criminal who surrendered at the end of 1741, declaring his wish to help the police round up his former associates in crime. More than one hundred criminals (professional thieves, criminal hideouts’ keepers and fencers for stolen goods) were arrested by Kain and the soldiers in a few days’ time. Kain was rehabilitated in the spring of 1742, becoming an official informer and detective of the Sysknoi prikaz (Office of Criminal Investigation). In such capacity he assisted in the apprehension of his past confederates, professional thieves, until 1748. The materials of his case published in this article for the first time contain unique and comprehensive information on the Moscow underworld of the 18th century.

В данной статье на материалах архивных документов и малоизвестных первичных источников анализируется проблема рецепции и интерпретации российскими буддистами смысла российских коронационных торжеств. Торжественная церемония восшествия российских императоров на престол была призвана
поражать воображение подвластных народов и внушать им мысль о превосходстве империи и православной религии, с которой тесным образом был связан коронационный обряд. Тибетоязычная поэма бурятского буддийского монаха, являвшегося членом бурятской депутации на коронацию Николая II в 1896 г., выразительно иллюстрирует идею о том, что коронация как политическое
и культурное явление обладала большей сложностью, чем можно было предполагать ранее. “Иноверцы” могли не просто разделять со своими православными соотечественниками торжественный пафос и “верноподданнический экстаз” венчания на власть императора России, но и придавать ему свой смысл в рамках собственного религиозного мировоззрения.
