How Trump's tariff rhetoric is affecting global market ETFs

As President-elect Donald Trump's second term in the White House approaches, some investors are using exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to play the Trump trade, the post-election market rally. CFRA Research head of ETF data and analytics Aniket Ullal joins Wealth! Host Brad Smith to check in on the ETF market before Trump's inauguration. "We've seen financials react very positively after the election of President-elect Trump. In particular, we've seen regional banks do very well" with ETFs like the SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE), "which holds a bunch of regional banks, those have actually reacted very positively to the election. That's partly driven by expectations of looser regulation, expectations of the new administration being less hawkish on antitrust," Ullal tells the Wealth! team. He adds, "[The] expectation of more M&A activity that's also driven ETFs that are focused on exchanges [and are] more capital markets related" like the iShares U.S. Broker-Dealers & Securities Exchanges ETF (IAI) and Invesco KBW Bank ETF (KBWB) On the overall ETF ecosystem, Ullal says, "This year, for the first time, we may expect in a calendar year to see flows into ETFs in the US exceed $1 trillion. We're already past the record," which was set in 2021 at $911 billion. "We're already at $950 [billion], so we're already past the record [and] we now could pass a trillion," given ETF flows are seasonally strong in the final month of the year as investors and funds. rebalance their portfolios. Musk is 'on point' about the CFPB: Frmr. Trump CFPB acting director

Elon Musk calls to eliminate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), making the agency the latest target of the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which President-elect Donald Trump has named Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to co-lead. Actum Strategic Advisors co-chair Mick Mulvaney, who was part of President-elect Donald Trump's first administration, serving as the Office of Management and Budget director, CFPB acting director, and the White House chief of staff, joins Catalysts Hosts Seana Smith and Madison Mills to discuss his thoughts on the proposed agency and its plans. Mulvaney tells Yahoo Finance he agrees with Musk's idea to shut down the CFPB, saying, "In fact, we examined the possibility of whether or not I had the authority to shut down the agency [as acting director], the lawyers that I had hired actually told me that I could not, and I respected that decision." He adds, "Elon's comments are right on point," the CFPB is "a duplicative layer of additional regulatory oversight into the consumer financial protection relationship." On how effective he expects the DOGE to be, Mulvaney says, "One of the weaknesses of this department is that it isn't real. It doesn't exist. It's not statutory. It's essentially a PR campaign. Right now. It has zero statutory authority." He notes, "That being said, it's going to have a tremendous amount of visibility. We tried to restructure the government back in 2018 and failed, in large part because we weren't able to sort of build public interest in fixing a bureaucracy that has pretty much grown stale over the last 100 years since the modern bureaucracy was created during the New Deal. If Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy can shed new light on it and get people interested in fixing the bureaucracy, that will be great. It won't have the authority ... So, it's going to be an all of government effort." Musk has seemingly become a part of Trump's inner circle on the campaign trail, but there have been some concerns about the relationship. Mulvaney says he doesn't know how long Musk will last in Trump's administration, adding, "I don't care how long somebody is there. I care what they do while they are there. If he can succeed in this, that would be a huge benefit." He adds the "over-under on how long Elon stays is two years" given Republicans have secured control of Congress during the first two years of Trump's second term. "It actually costs us more in taxpayer dollars than it does to house people somewhere safe. They say instantly, as soon as somebody has a safe house over their head, the likelihood of them descending into further drug problems or crime problems, it drops like a quarter. And the longer that they're off the street, the safer it gets," he says. "So what we've said is right now they're paying in most major cities, they're paying about $800,000 to $900,000 per one bedroom unit to build. We can get that cost down under $200,000." In this episode of Stocks In Translation, Yahoo Finance Markets and Data Editor Jared Blikre and Producer Sydnee Fried welcome back a friend of the show, Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. This episode’s word of the day is risk: the chance that an investment’s actual return will differ from the expected return, potentially resulting in financial loss. While it’s true that the market generally goes “up and to the left” over time, Sosnick believes that people often “get very focused on reward” without fully understanding the associated risks. “I think when you get into an environment where things are a little frothy, people lose sight of that,” says Sosnick. “Risk is always out there. And risk has a nasty way of biting you at exactly the wrong times.” Blikre and the team also discuss seasonality, a recurring theme in the months of September and October. When asked about his investment strategy around it, Sosnick responds, “I take into account seasonality, but I don’t I don’t trade off.” He argues that although seasonality is part of investor psychology, it’s too inconsistent to be a reliable trading strategy. “On a month-over-month basis, it’s a little too random to really, I think, make too many heavy-duty decisions,” says Sosnick. Should the US Treasury be buying bitcoin?

With Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis advocating for the US Treasury to create a bitcoin (BTC-USD) reserve, many are debating the merits of the department investing in cryptocurrency. On this week’s episode of Capitol Gains, Whalen Global Advisors Chairman Chris Whalen offers his take on the matter to host Rachelle Akuffo, Washington Correspondent Ben Werschkul, and senior columnist Rick Newman. “We're in the opposite situation that Franklin Roosevelt faced in 1933,” he explains. “We had deflation [in 1933]. Today we have inflation. That's why bitcoin has hit $100,000. Bitcoin is the best indication of inflation you could possibly have.” To Whalen, the answer lies not in crypto, but in gold. He believes the solution is for the Treasury to buy gold (GC=F) and sell credit default swaps. “You buy gold and start pushing the gold price up to where it should be,” he explains, “which is much higher than the current levels.” “Credit default swaps for the United States are trading at 40 basis points,” he adds. “That's twice Berkshire Hathaway. (BRK-B, BRK-A) When you start seeing corporates trading inside the United States in the credit markets, that's a problem. I think ultimately, we are going to have to respond to that.” “Unfortunately, nobody on Capitol Hill understands finance,” Whalen says. “Bitcoin is the problem. Web3 Media president Chris Lyons is constantly in search of "what's next" in technology. On the latest episode of Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac, Lyons sits down with Mac to discuss the future of blockchain and Web3. Lyons got his start in the music industry, then used his music engineering background to pivot to the tech world. He says that his background in music helps him have a pulse on future trends. "At the end of the day... things that we use on a day-to-day basis from Uber (UBER) to... Airbnb (ABNB), you know, even Google (GOOG, GOOGL) when it first came out, these all sounded like terrible ideas when they were coming out, right?" says Lyons, who is also a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz. He notes that the founders of those companies were forward-thinking enough to pursue their ideas despite pushback. Lyons believes that blockchain and Web3 will inform the next wave of such companies. He defines blockchain as, "a computer system that really verifies ownership," saying that it is "like a computer built on top of the internet... that now runs in its own ecosystem." He argues that there have been three eras of the internet so far: Web1, Web2, and Web3. Web1 is the read era, Web2 is the write era, and Web3 allows users to read, write, and have ownership over their content on the internet. Blockchain technology makes Web3 possible. Lyons sees this ownership as the future of the internet. "We are still in all these systems that are creating centralized ownership. And I think that the only true path forward is, you know, decentralization and blockchain," he says. In the future, Lyons believes that users won't need to think about how blockchain, Web3, or AI work behind the scenes. These new technologies will be integrated into user-friendly applications, similarly to how apps use GPS now. He says that even NFTs won't necessarily be thought of as "NFTs": "These are all technical terms that will eventually be put on the back burner because people will just want to be able to use...the benefits of the technology."
